U.S. Embassy commends Armenia on peaceful conduct of the referendum

The U.S. Embassy in Armenia has issued a statement on the Constitutional Referendum held in Armenia Sunday. The statement reads:

“We commend the Armenian people and the government on the peaceful conduct of the constitutional referendum on Sunday, December 6 which took place after an open debate.

The change in the form of Armenia’s government that will result from the new constitution is significant. The credible allegations of electoral irregularities reported by both non-partisan observers as well as Armenian political parties are of concern, however, and need to be fully investigated to ensure that the Armenian people can see the outcome of the referendum as credible and legitimate.

We urge the Electoral Commission and the Armenian government to carry out transparent investigations of all credible reports of irregularities. These issues must be addressed, both now and as the government and parliament develop the new electoral code, building on OSCE/ODIHR recommendations, to ensure that future elections are viewed by the Armenian people as credible, legitimate, and a true reflection of their will.”

Pope Francis opens the door to Catholic Jubilee

Tens of thousands of Catholic pilgrims assembled in Rome Tuesday to watch Pope Francis open a “Holy Door” in the walls of St Peter’s basilica at the start of an extraordinary Jubilee year, AFP reports.

After a mass on St Peter’s square, the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics was to pronounce the words “Aperite mihi Porta Iustitiae” — Latin for “open to me the gates of justice” — and the door, which is normally bricked up, opened.

The first pilgrims had been in the square since before dawn in search of a prime spot to watch the latest enactment of a 700-year-old tradition laden with religious symbolism.

An estimated 50,000 people, including hundreds of cardinals, bishops and members of religious orders, attended an event subject to unprecedented security measures in the wake of recent terrorist attacks around the world.

As Francis initiated the mass, many of the pilgrims had tears running down their cheeks, others listened in silent contemplation or private prayer.

Images of the ceremony were beamed live around the world.

In Catholic tradition, the opening of “Holy Doors” in Rome symbolises an invitation from the Church to believers to enter into a renewed relationship with God.

Francis’s predecessor Benedict XVI, who has lived in seclusion within the Vatican since retiring in 2013 because of failing health, has accepted an invitation to attend Tuesday’s ceremony.

It will be a rare public outing for the German ex-pontiff, now aged 88 and said to be extremely frail. His last one was for the canonisation of former popes John Paul II and John XXIII in April 2014.

Tuesday evening will see images by some of the world’s greatest environmental photographers projected onto the facade of Saint Peter’s in an initiative linked to the ongoing global climate conference in Paris.

Eagles of Death Metal on Paris stage with U2

US rock band Eagles of Death Metal have appeared on stage in Paris, less than a month after deadly attacks during their performance in the French capital, the BBC reports.

The band took to the stage to perform at the end of a U2 concert at the AccorHotels Arena.

“They were robbed of their stage three weeks ago and we would like to offer them ours tonight,” said singer Bono.

Ninety of the 130 people who died in the 13 November attacks were killed at the concert at the Bataclan venue.

Bono embraced Eagles of Death Metal singer Jesse Hughes ahead of an emotional joint rendition of Patti Smith’s People Have The Power.

EODM then performed I Love You All The Time.

An appearance by the Eagles of Death Metal at the 16,000-capacity arena had been heavily rumoured.

The Syrian Army and the National Defense Forces have reportedly managed to regain full control of the strategic Palmyra-Homs highway from ISIS militants in the center of the country, Sputnik News reports.

The strategic Palmyra-Homs highway has been won back by the Syrian Army and the National Defense Forces after fierce fighting with ISIS militants in central Syria, media reports said.

The Syrian forces took control of the highway after capturing the villages of al-Baiyarat and Marhatten in Palmyra’s western countryside late last week, according to the Iranian news agency FARS.

Right now, the Syrian Army and its allies are stationed about four kilometers from the western walls of Palmyra, the closest the government troops forces have been to the gates of this ancient UNESCO-listed city since July 2015, FARS reported.
