FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE) – The sixth medical mission from Fresno to the country of Armenia is underway. A team of forty doctors and medical experts will spend two weeks providing free care to people who need it. Berj Apkarian, the Honorary Consul for the Republic of Armenia in Fresno, is the mission leader. “Our agenda is full. our efforts is fruitful,” Apkarian says.

A first stop for the doctors: a history lesson at the Armenian Genocide Monument in Yerevan dedicated to the one and a half million Armenians who lost their lives in the 1915 genocide. Apkarian says it’s important that the mission begins with that visit. “Make them aware that crime against humanity is unacceptable. Not only against Armenians, against any nation,” he says.

An important focus of this mission trip is treating soldiers wounded in last year’s war with neighboring Azerbaijan. Physical therapists are on the team this year, as well as surgeons. Ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Brien Tonkinson of Fresno saw 54 patients on his first day. According to Apkarian, “He was so tired at the end of the day yet people kept coming from the different villages and Brien was with this big heart and compassion– he did not want to turn any patients down.”

While covid is a concern, Apkarian says the team is taking all the necessary precautions. He says the doctors are determined to do what they came to do. “They just want to see patients. They want to deliver the care. They want to meet their own expectation and be gratified with that,” he says.

The team is already planning for next year’s medical mission– year seven. They hope to be joined by doctors from other countries, making it a truly international effort.

Caucasian Knot, EU
Sept 28 2021

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has adopted a resolution demanding from Azerbaijan to release all the Armenian prisoners of war (POWs), and urging both parties to conduct an inquiry into the committed war crimes.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on September 27, marked one year since the start of the Karabakh war in 2020.

The full-scale combat actions took place in Nagorno-Karabakh in the period from September 27 to November 9, 2020. The "Caucasian Knot" has released a map marking the deployment of peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh. Another map prepared by the "Caucasian Knot" indicates what territories Azerbaijan got after the autumn war.

80 PACE members voted for the resolution; the delegations of Azerbaijan and Turkey voted against it.

"The PACE is concerned about the information of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), addressed to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, about 188 Armenians allegedly held in Azerbaijan. Some of them have been returned to Armenia since then. The fate of 30 Armenians, whose captivity, according to Armenia, is supported by video and photo evidence, and who may have been killed, is causing concern and worry. Azerbaijan should investigate the facts and provide information to the ECtHR and Armenia," the resolution states.

The PACE has also expressed concern over the fate of 48 Armenian POWs, most of whom were prosecuted. "The PACE calls on the Azerbaijani authorities to release all the remaining captives and return them to Armenia without any further delay," says the document.

The PACE has also expressed concern over the war crimes and other illegal acts, both against Armenia and against Azerbaijan, committed during the autumn war. "The PACE calls on Armenia and Azerbaijan to investigate the charges and bring to justice anyone, including at the command level, who is found guilty of such crimes," says the resolution.

Analysts criticize Armenian authorities’ passivity on anniversary of start of last autumn war

Caucasian Knot, EU
Sept 27 2021

Apart from the "Minute of Silence" in memory of those who perished during the 2020 autumn aggravation of the Karabakh conflict, Armenian authorities have planned no other events on the anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities. According to the analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot", the absence of authorities' attention to this issue is due to the fact that they have no Nagorno-Karabakh point on their agenda.

Events dedicated to the first anniversary of the start of the 2020 war should be held because this is the most important event in the history of the Armenian nation. The war took place; and people sacrificed so many victims, Armen Badalyan, a political technologist, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

However, in his opinion, authorities have failed to schedule any events, because for the ruling power, Nagorno-Karabakh and the Karabakh issue are no longer important factors.

"This is the power that lost the war. As a result of their failed policy, the Armenian people sacrificed thousands of their sons. Naturally, they don't want to remind once again about their loss, and, in general, about the Artsakh (Karabakh) issue; they do everything to have Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) forgotten," Mr Badalyan has stated.
