Glendale: Opponents do not speak for all Armenians

COMMUNITY COMMENTARY:
Opponents do not speak for all Armenians

By Haig Boyadjian
Published: Last Updated Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:26 PM PDT

The Gay and Lesbian Armenian Society of Los Angeles commends Glendale
Unified School District Supt. Michael Escalante for his willingness to
uphold his students’ First Amendment rights, which were expressed
through the Day of Silence event (`Parents blast Day of Silence,’
April 25).

We are glad that the Glendale Unified School District and other area
school districts support these events that seek to increase awareness
of sexual orientation issues.

The Gay and Lesbian Armenian Society of Los Angeles is a nonprofit
organization whose goal is to foster acceptance and promote equality
of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. We at the society
have tried as adults to create the kind of place we didn’t have as
children – a place where we can be ourselves without fearing for our
safety.

We want to state unequivocally that the handful of Armenian parents
who were vitriolic in their opposition to the Day of Silence do not
represent the entire Armenian community. The members of the Gay and
Lesbian Armenian Society of Los Angeles and our many supportive family
members and friends belong to the Glendale and Los Angeles Armenian
communities, and we all believe that there can be no tolerance for
bullying and harassment of any student, regardless of his or her
sexual orientation.

We condemn the homophobic comments that were aired on a recent
Armenian television program. They were irresponsible since such speech
can cause disastrous consequences for children, who might go so far as
to commit suicide or substance abuse as a result of rejection from
their families.

Naira Khachatrian was simply wrong when she said, `This is not a
school issue. This is an adult issue.’ The mistreatment of children at
school is an issue for all the parties involved – parents, school
administrators, teachers and, most of all, children.

All parents must support what the Day of Silence stands for; after
all, anyone’s sons or daughters are at risk for bullying or
harassment, whether it be for their real or perceived sexual identity.

The Gay and Lesbian Armenian Society of Los Angeles is saddened to see
that some Armenians are unable to see the parallels between racial and
sexual orientation discrimination. We come from a culture that is,
sadly, too familiar with what can happen when one group is ostracized
and discriminated against. However, we have hope for the future that
springs from the students who courageously organized and participated
in the Day of Silence event, especially given the sometimes hostile
response it has received in the community. And, we are proud and
encouraged that some of the participants in Day of Silence were
Armenian.

Homosexuality not only exists, it exists within the Armenian
community. The members of gay and lesbian society are the children and
grandchildren of the Armenian community. We are lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender and there is nothing wrong with us. If sexuality had
been a choice, surely we would have chosen to fit in with the majority
of our often traditional culture. But, we are all proud of who we are.

We hope that through events like the Day of Silence, more Armenian
families will accept that there is nothing wrong with children who
identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, and that it is not
a failure of parenting. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender sexual
orientation is not a product of non-Armenian culture. There are many
proud lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Armenians around the
world, including in Armenia.

The Glendale community – Armenians included – must do everything it
can to foster the acceptance of all of its parts, including those with
which it does not agree. Teaching students about the value of
tolerance and acceptance of people different than themselves is a
powerful tool that can prevent tragic events such as the murders of
Matthew Shepard and, more recently, Lawrence King. These two innocent
children were murdered by their peers – peers who were never taught
the value of accepting others different from themselves.

We call upon our fellow Armenian brothers and sisters to support
tolerance, the local school districts, and most importantly our
children. We must all raise our voices against hate and
misunderstanding and support valuable programs like Day of Silence
that can make a positive difference.

HAIG BOYADJIAN is the president of Gay and Lesbian Armenian Society of
Los Angeles and a resident of Glendale.

Sirusho of Armenia Astonishes At Eurovision Rehersal

Eurovision 2008 rehersals are continuing in Belgrade ahead of next
week’s Eurovision 2008 song contest and the first three participants
to rehearse today at the Belgrade Arena were Sirusho of Armenia, the
Hind from the Netherlands and the Finnish rockers of Teräsbetoni.

According to Eurovision.tv first rehearsal of the day was Armenia’s
Sirusho, who astonished everyone at her first rehearsal last Monday
and her great performance at the party thrown by the Russian
delegation at the Euroclub.

Sirusho and her three backing dancers once again delivered a steady
performance, opening with the dancers entangled around Sirusho’s legs,
making Sirusho wave in the air when she stoops.

Sirusho did not wear her final outfit for the semi-final on the 20th
of May, but it was revealed by a person from the Armenian delegation:
Sirusho’s dress is classy, sexy and shiny. During the rehearsal, fire
was blowing up from the stage and the pyrotechnics were tried
out. Given the expressions on Sirusho and her dancers’ faces, it was
seeming like they were quite content with rehearsals. Later at the
press conference, Sirusho and the Armenian delegation expressed their
satisfaction with today’s rehearsal.

Furthermore, Sirusho told the fans and accredited press that there had
been some security issues regarding some of the elements which were
supposed to be used in the act. Sirusho explained that this of course
is unfortunate, but it does not matter because in the end it is the
vocal perfomance that counts.

Sirusho’s dress will be designed by famous Russian designer Igor
Chapurin, who is well-known in Paris, Moscow, New York, Tokyo,
etc. The dresses for the rehearsals and press-conferences are acquired
from Dolce & Gabbana prete-a-porter collection and Armenian designer
Kivera Naynomis, more known as Arevik Simonyan, reports Eurovision’s
Armenian website.

Sirusho is ranking on Top three levels of major online bookmakers’
sites as the favorite to win this year’s Eurovision 2008 song
festival.

performance of Kele Kele that will be presented in Eurovision 2008.

"Infotour 2008" Armenian-Russian Forum of Businesswomen Held

"INFOTOUR 2008" ARMENIAN-RUSSIAN FORUM OF BUSINESSWOMEN HELD

Y EREVAN, MAY 17, NOYAN TAPAN. "Only after the Businesswomen Support
Foundation-Business Center adjunct to the RA Chamber of Commerce and
Industry (CCI) started operating, it became possible to form an idea
about how great the potential of Armenian businesswomen is," the RA CCI
chairman Martin Sargsian stated at "Infotour 2008" Armenian-Russian
forum of businesswomen on May 16.

In his words, there are opportunities to increase trade turnover
between Armenia and Russia in such sectors as agriculture, chemistry,
tourism, food industry – in particular, organic food production,
construction, IT, textile production and energy. M. Sargsian expressed
a hope that the forum will lay a basis for new cooperation projects.

The director of the foundation-business center Lilia Gevorgian said
that the Armenian-Russian forum of business women is being held in the
framework of the programs on cooperation of South Caucasian countries.
The idea to organize this forum was put forward by the Armenian
delegation at the South Caucasian Economic Forum held in the Abkhazian
city of Pitsunda in the autumn of 2007. According to L. Gevorgian,
familiarization trips to be oragnized during Infotour 2008 will help
Russian businesswomen to form a notion of Armenia’s business resources.
By the way, the majority of 15 members of the Russian delegation (from
Tatarstan, Abkhazia, Sochi) are businesswomen engaged in the tourism
sector.

The director general of Continent OJSC (Sochi) Lyudmila Aminova
expressed an opinion that such forums should take place in Sochi as
well, which will allow to direct part of Sochi’s tourist flow to
Armenia. Asya Khachaturian, who runs a hotel and public catering
business in Sochi, made a proposal that the RA CCI assist with
organizing an exhibition on Armenia’s tourism sector in Sochi. She said
that some Armenian companies will participate in programs on
construction of Olympic facilities in Sochi and supply of cement for
construction work in this city.

The chairwoman of the Union of Abkhazian Businesswomen Yulia Gumba
considered cooperation with Armenia in the tourism sector as
prospective, noting that 3 million tourists visited Abkhazia in 2007.
The director general of Mika-Cement company Naira Martirosian expressed
a wish that this cooperation would also cover Nagorno Karabakh.

M. Sargsian announced that it is envisaged to organize the response
forum of businesswomen in Russia in September of this year. According
to him, the Russian delegation will take familiarization trips in
Armenia until late May.

Kasyanov: Russia should take active part in resolution of NK

M. Kasyanov: Russia, as a country, responsible for all processes in the
region, should take an active part in the resolution of Nagorno
Karabakh conflict

2008-05-17 16:00:00

ArmInfo. Russia, as a country, responsible for all processes in the
region, should take an active part in the resolution of Nagorno
Karabakh conflict. Russia should not reject the responsibility for what
has happened there and should give up its empire ambitions, the former
prime minister of Russia Mikhail Kasyanov says in an interview with
Day.az.

In response to the question that Russia supports Armenia in this issue
and considers it its main ally in the South Caucasus, frequently
ignoring international resolutions on the status of Nagorno Karabakh,
M. Kasyanov says: ‘I do not think that Russia supports Armenia, I think
this is an artificially raised topic. I would repeat that Russia does
not take the due active participation in the problem, because the
government has no time to establish order in its own country. I am not
an expert in the issue of arabakh but I can say that the resolution of
this problem is extremely important both for the region and for
Russia’.

‘But, I consider that Russia should become the main partner of
Azerbaijan in the resolution of the territorial conflict and I hope
that if there is nothing negative, Azerbaijan and Armenia will settle
the problem peacefully’ M. Kasyanov says.
