Washing of the Feet Service in Holy Etchmiadzin

On Holy Thursday, April 5, the major services of Holy Week began in the
Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.  Following Morning Services, a solemn Divine
Liturgy was celebrated in the Mother Cathedral by Rev. Fr. Hovhannes
Mayilian, in remembrance of our Lord Jesus Christ’s Last Supper and the
establishment of the sacrament of Holy Communion.

In the afternoon, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos
of All Armenians offered the Washing of the Feet service, which commemorates
the act of great humility by Jesus Christ in washing the feet of his
disciples.

As the service commenced, readings from the Holy Bible and the singing of
hymns prepared the men who were chosen to represent the twelve disciples, as
well as all of the faithful in attendance.

His Holiness then blessed the oil that is later distributed to the faithful,
which is taken home and combined with the oil used for cooking the Easter
meal.  Afterwards, following the example of the Lord, the Catholicos of All
Armenians kneeled down before the twelve men and washed their feet and
anointed them with oil.  This year, the men were selected from among the
bishops, priests, deacons and seminarians of Holy Etchmiadzin.

‘Genocide’ row threatens pipeline

Turkey has suspended talks with Gaz de France over a key gas pipeline,
in protest at a French bill about the killing of Armenians in World
War I. The planned pipeline would carry natural gas from the Middle
East and Central Asia to Austria through Turkey. The French
Parliament is considering a law that would make it an offence to deny
that Ottoman Turks committed genocide against Armenians. The draft
law was approved by the National Assembly in October. It will be
considered by the Senate next and then return to the lower house
before it becomes law. Turkish denials The 4.6bn euro ($6.1bn;
£3.1bn) Nabucco pipeline project is supposed to reduce the European
Union’s reliance on Russian gas. It also passes through Bulgaria,
Romania and Hungary, which have already reached agreement with Gaz de
France. The Turkish government denies that as many as 1.5 million
Armenians were killed in systematic killings between 1915 and 1917
under the Ottoman Empire. It says that thousands of Turks and
Armenians were killed when Armenians sided with Russian troops
invading the empire, but many countries have since recognised the
killings as genocide. The Nabucco pipeline also passes through
Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, which have already reached agreement
with Gaz de France.

ANC of Arizona Meets with Congressman Grijalva

— ANC Expresses Gratitude for Congressman’s Support of Armenian
American Community

TUCSON, AZ – The Armenian National Committee of Arizona (ANC of AZ)
visited the office of US Representative Raul Grijalva (D-AZ-07) at his
Tucson district office on April 4th to thank him for co-sponsoring the
Armenian Genocide resolution, H.Res.106. The meeting was led by ANC of
AZ Chairman, Yervant Baltajian who was joined by United Human Rights
Council (UHRC) of Arizona Chairwoman, Salpi Demirjian.

Baltajian updated the Congressman regarding the Arizona Armenian
community’s recent activities and invited him to join the ANC of AZ at
its annual Armenian Genocide commemoration scheduled to take place later
this month in Phoenix. Demirjian updated the Congressman on the
activities of the UHRC in Arizona. The two also presented the
Congressman with letters signed by Arizonans from across the state
thanking him for his support of H.Res.106, which was introduced in the
US House earlier this year.

Congressman Grijalva was one of the early co-sponsors of the resolution

resolution by fellow Arizonan US Representatives Ed Pastor (D-AZ-04,
Phoenix) and Rick Renzi (R-AZ-01, Flagstaff).

said Demirjian. "Having experienced these meetings makes it clear that
grassroots involvement is the key to ensuring our concerns are addressed

Kerkorian Makes Offer for Chrysler

Kerkorian Makes Offer for Chrysler

Apr 5 02:42 PM US/Eastern
By KEN THOMAS
Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) – Billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian is proposing to
pay $4.5 billion in cash for Chrysler, as parent DaimlerChrysler AG
examines what to do with its troubled U.S. automaking arm.

A deal would put Kerkorian in charge of Chrysler a decade after he
claims he was tricked out of a potential billions of dollars in the
1998 deal in which Germany’s DaimlerBenz combined with Chrysler.

The offer disclosed Thursday from Kerkorian’s Tracinda Corp. is
slightly lower than at least one competing bid from Canadian auto-
parts supplier Magna International Inc., worth a reported $4.7
billion.

Tracinda said it would place a $100 million deposit for the right to
exclusive bargaining rights.

Tracinda in a statement said it wants "to build and strengthen" the
troubled automaker and "will offer the UAW and Chrysler management the
opportunity to participate as equity partners in the transaction."

DaimlerChrysler shares climbed $2.96, or 3.7 percent, to $83.95 on the
New York Stock Exchange after the announcement.

California-based Tracinda said its offer is subject to Chrysler
reaching a new collective bargaining agreement with the United Auto
Workers as well as a deal with DaimlerChrysler on sharing the unfunded
pension liabilities and health care costs of Chrysler retirees.

A message seeking comment was left Thursday with a UAW spokesman.

Tracinda also said it’s ready to start a more extensive review of
Chrysler’s financial books right away and believes it could complete
it within 60 days.

Han Tjan, head of corporate communications for DaimlerChrysler in New
York, said the German-American automaker is talking with partners
about a sale and that the chairman is satisfied with the process.

"All of our options are still open. For us to talk about (Tracinda) is
speculation," Tjan said.

At least two groups in addition to Tracinda and Magna reportedly have
expressed interest in Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler. Cerberus
Capital Management LLC and a consortium of investors led by Blackstone
Group each have reviewed Chrysler’s finances and are expected to make
bids.

In a letter to DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche, Tracinda said
it has been following the developments at Chrysler closely and has
been studying available materials about the automaker.

"Having been a major shareholder for over a decade we are very
familiar with both Chrysler and the automotive industry, and have come
to believe, all factors considered, that a private ownership approach
is in the best interests of all Chrysler constituencies," said the
letter, signed by Tracinda adviser Jerome York, a former Chrysler
Corp. executive.

The letter said it would be easier for a privately owned company to
take a long-term approach "to build Chrysler into a robust and
lasting, stand-alone entity."

Kerkorian long has had interest in automotive companies.

Late last year he dumped the last block of what once was a nearly 10
percent share of General Motors Corp., the world’s largest automaker.

He had Kerkorian pushed an alliance between GM, Nissan and Renault
SA. GM’s board voted to explore the idea of an alliance, but after
three months of discussion the idea was scrapped. York served as
Tracinda’s representative on the GM board but stepped down after the
alliance talks fell apart.

Kerkorian, whose wholly owned Tracinda was Chrysler’s largest
shareholder at the time of its 1998 merger with DaimlerBenz, sued the
combined company in 2000. He claimed that DaimlerBenz engineered a
takeover of Chrysler, then cheated him out of billions by casting the
deal as a merger of equals. A federal judge rejected his claim.

ANC of Montana Meets with Congressional Delegation

HUSON, MT – The Armenian National Committee of Montana (ANC MT) visited
the offices of US Representative Dennis Rehberg, as well as US Senators
Max Baucus and John Tester this past week to discuss issues of concern
to the Armenian American community and update them regarding the status
of the current Armenian Genocide resolutions in the US Congress.

"Here in Montana, it is extremely important to ensure that the voice of
the Armenian American community is represented so that human rights
catastrophes like the Armenian Genocide are recognized and understood by
fellow Americans everywhere. The key to learning from historical
mistakes is to realize and comprehend what has happened," said Yedvart
Tchakerian, Chairman of the ANC of Montana.

Tchakerian has also implemented a grassroots letter-signing campaign,
encouraging Montanans to reach out to their representatives about the
Armenian Genocide resolutions, H.Res.106 and S.Res.106 in the US House
and US Senate. As part of this effort, he is working with local
universities and other humanitarian institutions to collect signatures
for letters.

"These letters demonstrate the sentiment of Americans here in Montana;
we believe that genocide must be recognized," added Tchakerian.

influential Armenian American grassroots political organization. Working

Arizona Armenian Community Unites in Support of the ANCA

Phoenix, AZ – Armenian Americans in Arizona united for a fundraiser in
support of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) on March
31, 2007 in the City of Scottsdale organized by the ANC of Arizona.
Arizona, popularly known as the Grand Canyon State, is home to a rapidly
growing and prosperous Armenian American community. The ANCA fundraiser
was held at the home of Toros and Rose Kabajouzian.

"The ANC of Arizona is proud to be part of the ANCA’s grassroots network
of over 50 chapters across the United States," remarked Yervant
Baltajian, chairman of the Arizona ANC. "Our community in Arizona is
building a strong ANC tradition and our event in support of the ANCA is
part of this positive process," Baltajian added.

Well over 75 Armenian Americans from throughout Arizona, representing a
broad cross-section of the community, attended the ANCA fundraiser in
Scottsdale. Some attendees drove from as far away as Sedona, a two hour
ride to Scottsdale, to meet and greet ANCA leaders attending the
fundraiser and hear a first-hand report about the important efforts
being led by the organization in behalf of the community. The featured
speakers at the event were ANCA National Chairman Ken Hachikian and
ANCA-WR Regional Board Member Zanku Armenian.

"We are excited by the positive energy and grateful for the enthusiastic
support expressed for the ANCA’s mission by the Arizona Armenian
American community," said Zanku Armenian, ANCA Western Region Board
Member. "The ANC of Arizona is playing a critical leadership role in
mobilizing and uniting all parts of the community to advocate on key
issues and in the process expanding their involvement in Arizona
politics through a growing grassroots network."

The ANC of Arizona is led by Yervant Baltajian, a former United States
Air Force Senior Airman and entrepreneur. "We have laid the foundation
to ensure the growing Armenian community in Arizona will have a strong
voice for years to come throughout the state of Arizona and on a
national level," said Baltajian.

Because Arizona is one of the fastest growing states with respect to
population, its political power has grown considerably over the past
decade. Currently, the state has eight members in the U.S. House of
Representatives, several of whom have been supportive of Armenian
American issues pending in Congress thanks to the grassroots activism of
the ANC of Arizona. At present, Representatives Raul Grijalva (D), Ed
Pastor (D) and Rick Renzi (R) from Arizona have cosponsored H.Res.106,
the Armenian Genocide resolution.

The Arizona ANC is part of the Armenian National Committee of America,
