artificioso, formalizado y tremendamente imaginativo.
Yo sà – he

BAKU: Congratulations of Aliyev to the people of Azerbaijan

AzerTag, Azerbaijan
Dec 31 2004
CONGRATULATIONS OF PRESIDENT OF AZERBAIJAN ILHAM ALIYEV TO THE PEOPLE
OF AZERBAIJAN ON THE OCCASION OF THE WORLD AZERBAIJAN IS SOLIDARITY
DAY AND THE NEW YEAR
[January 01, 2005, 00:11:24]
Dear ladies and Gentlemen!
I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you on the New Year.
The year 2004 was extremely important one in the history of
Azerbaijan. In 2004, a new era in Azerbaijan’s development began. It
was the year of difficult tests for all of us, for me, for the whole
people of Azerbaijan. We have lived out this year without out
national leader Heydar Aliyev. It was very important to continue all
the successes Azerbaijan has achieved over the past ten years.
I was trying to do my best for steady development of Azerbaijan and
ensuring of peace, stability and progress in the country.
2004 was a successful year for Azerbaijan in all spheres. Azerbaijan
has consolidated its international positions. Our country has
achieved great success with respect to both bilateral relations and
regional cooperation. Azerbaijan intensified its cooperation with
international organizations.
Progress has been achieved in the settlement of the hardest problem
of our country and the region – Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict. The international community now applies more serious
approach to the issue. The OSCE Minsk Group has intensified its
activities. Other international organizations – the European Union,
the Council of Europe, the United Nations – frankly express today
their positions on the problem. It is no secret that 2004 marked the
turn in this process – the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan is
already not a subject of negotiations.
I sated more than once that Azerbaijan would never compromise the
issue of territorial integrity; we will never discuss this issue. The
talks must be held on the base of the international law only. I am
very glad that the international organizations directly involved in
this problem as well as the international community already realize
this stance; this stance is worthy of more attention. I am sure we
will manage to solve the problem only on the base of the norms of the
international law.
At the same time, Azerbaijan has to strengthen its armed forces.
As you know while visiting regions this year, I also visited military
units to study the situation personally. I saw our army strengthening
day by day. We attach a paramount importance to this issue. The 2004
budged had envisaged the growth military expenditures, and in the
middle of the year, we introduced changes in the budget and did that.
The 2005 budget implies almost 30% increase, and we will do raise the
amount of funds for the army needs. Our army should be stronger and
capable to solve all the tasks set.
We want to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh problem peacefully, and adhere
to this policy. However, we will never put up with the loss of our
territories, and will liberate our native lands in any way. To reach
the goal, our army should be powerful. In order to have a powerful
army, Azerbaijan should develop its economy. It was not accidental
that so great attention was paid to economic development of the
country in 2004. The aim of the programs of socio-economic
development, regional development is to consolidate Azerbaijan,
increase its economic potential and therefore, increase its power.
I am very happy that the achievements are obvious in this sphere as
well.
The volume of GDP growth made up almost 10%. Foreign investments in
the economy of Azerbaijan reached approximately $4 billion. Over 110
thousand new jobs were opened in the provinces. For the country with
8 million of population, it is the fact, which has no analogues in
the world. I am glad that the program of regional development
initiated by me brings fruits; we all can already see that we are
able to cope with any task set. The creation of 110 thousand jobs
means that 110 thousand people are employed, and bring wage to their
families. Simultaneously, our economic potential is being
strengthened. Important measures to open more jobs will be undertaken
next year as well, and I am sure we will fulfill our promises.
Social problems are also in the constant focus of our attention.
Salaries and wages, pensions and other social payments have been
increased more than once during this year. This work will be
continued. Much work has been done to increase the minimal wage.
Under executive order I have recently signed, the minimal wage will
be increased next year by 25 percent. This is a priority of our
political course.
I repeatedly stated that despite the Azerbaijan’s economy is
developed on the base of the principles of market economy, we have to
pay constant attention to the social issues. Of course, solving the
social problems of refugees and IDPs is the most important task. We
have been working hard in this direction. New settlements are being
constructed for the refugees and internally displaced persons,
necessary funds have been allocated from the State Oil Fund for this
purpose, and we will continue this effort.
The Oil Fund plays a great role in the economy of Azerbaijan, for
strengthening of the country’s economic potential and solving social
problems. This Fund was founded by national leader of our people
Heydar Aliyev, and now, the currency reserves of Azerbaijan make up
today $1 billion 80 million. A lot of social programs are funded by
the Oil Fund. Of course, if the oil strategy initiated by Heydar
Aliyev had not began, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline successfully
constructed and the ‘Contract of the Century’ successfully
implemented, it would be impossible to talk about economic progress
today.
All this indicates once again that Azerbaijan is a thoroughly and
steadily developing country.
Completion of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline’s construction in
2005, successful construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ersurum gas
pipeline will allow us to considerably increase economic potential of
Azerbaijan within the few next years. It will also allow us to solve
all our issues, social problems, realize infrastructure projects and
consolidate even more our Homeland.
Dear ladies and Gentlemen!
Dear friends!
Dear brothers and sisters!
The year 2004 was very important for me. This was the first year of
my presidency. I have been doing my best to serve worthily the
Azerbaijani people, my homeland to contribute to strengthening of our
country. It is up to you how much I have succeeded. Anyhow, I have
been and I will be striving for doing all possible for Azerbaijan to
become a powerful country, enhance its international prestige and for
its people to live better.
Today we also mark the Solidarity Day of the world Azerbaijanis. I
offer my congratulations to all of you on this occasion, as well. I
call on the Azerbaijanis around the world to unity and solidarity.
I once again wish you a Happy New Year, good health, welfare and
family happiness.

Ukraine PM resigns

UKRAINE PM RESIGNS
1.1.2005. 10:56:09

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich has resigned and all but
admitted losing a presidential re-run vote, but stopped short of
conceding defeat to opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko.
Meanwhile Mr Yushchenko readied to ring in the New Year with Georgian
President Mikhail Saakashvili, who led a “rose” uprising in Tbilisi
last year, in an appearance sure to irritate Russia.
Mr Yanukovich resigned from his post and said that his appeals over
the historic December 26 vote were unlikely to be granted, but
stopped short of conceding defeat in the poll, which would have
brought Ukraine’s six-week election saga to an end.
“I have made a decision and am formally submitting my resignation,”
Mr Yanukovich said in a televised address. “I find it impossible to
occupy any post in a government headed by these authorities.”
“Concerning the election results, we are keeping up the fight but I
don’t have much hope for a just decision from the central election
commission and the supreme court,” he said.
Mr Yanukovich repeated his assertion that “external forces” were
responsible for his defeat in the December 26 vote.
“Our country is close to a serious defeat… for the first time in 13
years its independence is in danger,” he said. “External forces took
advantage of Ukraine’s internal conflict to show the outside world
their power and influence.”
He spoke as thousands of people streamed to Kiev’s central
Independence Square, the epicentre of the “orange revolution” where
shortly before midnight, pro-West Yushchenko and Saakashvili were to
bask in the success of their respective peaceful uprisings against
Soviet-era regimes.
Mr Saakashvili, who led last year’s “rose revolution” in Georgia and
was one of the most fervent supporters of Ukraine’s “orange”
counterpart, flew into Kiev Friday to show solidarity with both the
nation where he attended university and his friend, Mr Yushchenko.
“I want to congratulate all Ukrainians with the New Year and
victory,” the 37-year-old leader said in Ukrainian upon arrival as he
was handed a bouquet of orange roses.
Mr Yushchenko’s “orange revolution” marked the second year in a row
that peaceful protests headed by a Western-leaning leader swept out a
Russia-friendly regime in an ex-Soviet nation.
Moscow has accused the United States of fomenting the unrest in order
to install allies in its strategic backyard, charges that Washington
has denied.
But opposition movements in authoritarian-leaning former Soviet
republics and Russia have hailed the peaceful uprisings and in the
heat of the “orange” demonstrations, Belarussians, Armenians, Azeris
and Russians mingled with Ukrainian protestors in central Kiev.
Mr Saakashvili was mobbed by hundreds of wildly cheering opposition
supporters as he walked through a tent city in central Kiev set up in
Mr Yushchenko’s support after he refused to concede defeat to Mr
Yanukovich in a November 21 runoff because of fraud.
“I didn’t have a chance to officially support you, but during your
victory I once again felt myself a Kievite,” said Mr Saakashvili, who
attended university in the Ukrainian capital.
“Georgia’s revolution has been considerably strengthened by Ukraine’s
‘orange revolution,’ which will drive important changes in all of
former Soviet territory,” he said in an appearance on Ukrainian
pro-opposition television last week.
The mass opposition demonstrations led to the annulment of a November
presidential runoff election due to massive fraud, re-made Ukraine
into a de facto parliamentary republic and led to a historic re-run
vote on December 26, which Mr Yushchenko won by more than 2.2 million
votes.
If Mr Yanukovich chooses to continue with his appeals over the
results of the vote, which he contends was marked with
irregularities, Mr Yushchenko’s official confirmation as the winner
could be put off for weeks as the legal wrangling drags on.

Tehran: Prominent cleric warns of plot against Islamic world

Tehran Times, Iran
Jan 1 2005
Prominent cleric warns of plot against Islamic world
TEHRAN (IRNA) — Interim Friday Prayer leader of Tehran Ayatollah
Mohammad Emami Kashani said here in his second sermon, “Global
arrogance has hatched a dangerous plot against the Islamic world,
aimed at uprooting the religious culture.” Addressing thousands of
worshipers at the central campus of Tehran University, the prominent
cleric added, “After accomplishing its previous task of uprooting the
Christian culture in the West and elsewhere in the world, the global
arrogance has now focused on the Islamic world and is quite
determined to deprive it of its genuine religious culture.” The
interim Friday prayer leader said, “The plot against Islam is being
pursued through various channels. Sometimes the Islamic ideology and
fundamentals of Islam are attacked, while at other times the enemies
try to spread the seeds of disunity and distrust in the Islamic and
Arab World on the one side and in Iran on the other, or try to create
crises between the world’s Shi’as and Sunnis.” Referring to the
history of conspiring against religious cultures, Ayatollah Emami
Kashani said, “Hatching plots against monotheist religions can be
traced back in world history as far back as the 16th and 17th
centuries, although such plots were not originally aimed at uprooting
the Islamic culture.” Considering the Islamic civilization as an
important part of the global religious civilization, he said, “A
civilization is comprised of cultural habits, economic transactions,
political conduct, family and social relations, and various aspects
of a large group of people’s lives.” Tehran Friday prayer leader
said, “God’s messengers set the foundations of civilizations and the
holy books brought by five of them whose prophecy was meant to be for
the whole mankind have signs indicating that the religious
civilizations have always been the foundation of mankind’s history.”
Ayatollah Emami Kashani said, “Agents of the global arrogance have
been commissioned to detach mankind from God’s messengers, not from
God, and now that they have already succeeded to do so within the
Christian world they are heading to do the same in the Islamic
world.”
He congratulated the Christian New Year to the world Christians, and
particularly the Iranian Armenians, wishing them all a very happy and
good new year, full of God’s special blessings.
The interim Friday prayer leader referred to the situation in
Palestine as a sample of efforts aimed at depriving the Islamic world
of its Islamic civilization. He added, “The United States and the
Zionist regime push forth that plot under the name of the
international campaign against terrorism, the promotion of democracy,
and the enhancement of peace and stability in the world.” Addressing
the Iraqi nation, he said, “The Americans are not after providing
security and stability for Iraq. The Iraqi nation should rely on the
guidance of prominent religious sources of jurisprudence and take
part in the national elections, blocking the path of enemies and
their countless plots.” The Friday prayer leader stressed the need to
preserve Islamic unity in order to block the path of the enemies’
ill-intentioned plots, and addressing the world Christians said, “Do
not support the oppressor powers and do not remain silent when they
commit crimes against mankind so that you would not feel ashamed and
would not be condemned before Jesus Christ in the Hereafter.” Also
addressing the youth in Iran, he said, “Wake up and heed the plots
hatched by the enemies against us.”

Calgary jeweller scores big on sports scene

Edmonton Journal (Alberta)

Calgary jeweller scores big on sports scene: Winning ground against
international giants
by Grant Robertson, Calgary Herald; CanWest News Service
CALGARY
CALGARY – Tom Wilson is no stranger to glitzy jewelry. For the past
15 years, the Detroit Pistons’ chief executive has been the owner of
two championship rings from the National Basketball Association
team’s back-to-back titles in 1989-90.
He remembers when the Pistons received those rings, they seemed so
big and extravagant.
But when the team received its 2004 championship rings last month, it
was clear times had changed. The latest Pistons bauble — a
conglomeration of roughly $20,000 US worth of gold and diamonds —
makes the old ones look like a high-school ring, he says.
“It is gargantuan, yes — three times the size. You can’t lift your
arm. It covers two knuckles,” says Wilson.
The man behind the masterpiece is Miran Armutlu, a fifth-generation
Armenian jeweller and the founder of
Calgary-based Intergold Ltd., a small company that has taken the
North American sporting scene by storm in the past three years.
In addition to the Pistons, the company has made championship rings
for the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay
Lightning; and Major League Baseball’s Anaheim Angels and Florida
Marlins.
It has been a long road for the company Armutlu started with his
brother in the early 1980s. But Intergold — the smallest player in a
business dominated by international giants Jostens and Balfour — is
now commanding a good portion of the spotlight.
“Finally, over the last three years I would say, our reputation is
starting to precede us,” says Armutlu, sitting in the boardroom at
Intergold’s manufacturing plant in northeast Calgary.
“We’re finding that when we get in the door, people have heard of
us.”
Sales once were more difficult. When Armutlu decided the company
should branch out from designing jewelry, graduation rings and
corporate items into the sports arena, he walked into the offices of
the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1989 as an unknown.
“I just told them I wanted to do their ring,” Armutlu says of the
meeting with the team’s managers, all of them ex-football players.
“They all stood up, looked down at me and said ‘you better make us
the nicest championship ring in the world.’ Well, these were big
boys, they could be very persuasive.”
Intergold landed several Canadian Football League contracts after
that, including the 1992 Calgary Stampeders Grey Cup ring, but the
company still lacked a major U.S. deal.
Part of the challenge, says Armutlu, is that pro sports is dominated
by close relationships between teams and manufacturers. Once teams
picked a jeweller, they stuck with them.
In a strange twist, Intergold’s break came when Michael Jordan left
basketball to play minor-league baseball. With the Bulls’ dynasty on
hiatus, the Houston Rockets stepped in to claim back-to-back titles
in ’94 and ’95.
More importantly, the Rockets were a team without a jeweller.
“We were lucky. The organization didn’t have any old ties, so they
took a chance on us,” he says.
Being a small operation is an initial hurdle for Intergold against
its larger competitors, but that agility has become its biggest
asset.
Where other jewelers produce artist renderings of rings for teams,
Intergold makes a genuine version of each proposal, no matter how
many variations. Whatever rings aren’t used get melted down and
recycled.
“We knew they were the smaller company,” says Wilson of the Calgary
firm.
“But they kept telling us, don’t make a decision based on something
that looks good on paper. If you like these five designs, we’ll make
you five rings.
“Other companies were saying, ‘Well, maybe we can do one ring, but
these things are very expensive.’ … We started to get a feel for
just how badly they wanted the job.”

Manuel conocio a Stepan hace
cuatro anos.
