HEIKKI TALVITIE: WE BELIEVE KARABAKH CONFLICT WILL BE SETTLED

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ “The OSCE Minsk Group deals with the Nagorno
Karabakh conflict settlement. As you know, the US, France and Russia
are the MG Co-Chairs and the activities of the group are efficient
enough”, EU Special Representative for South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie
stated in Baku. In his words, the EU is assisting to the conflict
settlement and believes that this problem will be resolved. The EU
will go on forming peacekeeping forces to be sent to the region. He
also stated that the EU can contribute to the restoration and
reconstruction of the territories after the conflict is settled.

The United States might be trying to isolate Iran internationally,
but that hasn’t stopped Armenia from deepening its ties with its
neighbor to the south. During a visit to Armenia, President Mohammad
Khatami said that Tehran-Yerevan cooperation will promote mutual
interest, regional security and stability. Khatami met with the
secretary of the Armenian National Security Council, Serzh Sarkisian.
Khatami stressed that Iran supports Armenia, believing that mutual
cooperation can help development and security in the Caucasus.
Sarkisian voiced his hopes for further expansion of bilateral
relations, commenting that cooperation in the fields of culture,
education and economy is in the interest of regional security.
Linking the railways of the two neighboring countries would be
effective in establishing the north-south corridor, Sarkisian added.

schools should have a unit covering genocide throughout the world,
including the Armenian Genocide, the killings in Ukraine as well as
recent incidents in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Sudan. Currently,
public schools are required to teach a course on the Holocaust only.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ According to the draft budget of the US foreign aid
for fiscal year 2006, Armenia will receive $55 million, Azerbaijan –
$35 million and Georgia – $67 million. Besides Armenia and Azerbaijan
are to be allocated $5 million as military aid and $750 thousand for
the realization of the program of military education and trainings.
Nagorno Karabakh will also receive $5 million as humanitarian aid.

OFFICIAL VISIT OF FOREIGN MINISTER OF AZERBAIJAN TO TURKEY CONTINUES

On February 10, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elmar
Mammadyarov, having arrived in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey
(GNAT), has met with Chairman Bulent Arinc.

Minister E. Mammadyarov has expressed to Bulent Arinc gratitude for
active support by the Turkish deputies of the position of Azerbaijan
during adoption at PACE session of the resolution specifying that
Armenia is a state-aggressor and that the Armenians of
Nagorno-Karabakh are separatist forces.

Chairman of GNAT Mr. Bulent Arinc told about the program of his visit
to Baku, realized on the invitation of Chairman of the Milli Majlis
of Azerbaijan Murtuz Alaskarov, has emphasized, that his meeting with
the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has passed very fruitfully.
He has asked E. Mammadyarov to convey his gratitude to President
Ilham Aliyev, Chairman of Azerbaijan Parliament Murtuz Alaskarov for
rendered high attention and care.

At the meeting, also were focused the Azerbaijani-Turkish
inter-parliamentary links, held exchange of views on the
Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, construction of the
oil and gas pipelines of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and
Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum, the railroad line Baku-Tbilisi-Kars.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ According to the US, leaders of Azerbaijan and
Armenia must activate their efforts in settlement of the conflict, US
Ambassador to Azerbaijan Rino Harnish said at a press conference. The
Ambassador gave a positive assessment of the activity of OSCE Minsk
Group and expressed opinion that the visit of OSCE mission to the
region testified to the efforts and interests of OSCE in the fair
and long-term resolution of the conflict. He came out for peaceful
resolution of the conflict in the nearest future, giving a positive
assessment of US’s role and efforts in the given issue, which would
contribute to establishing peace and stability in the region. At
the same time, Ambassador Harnish noted that the resolution does not
depend only on the USA or any other country.

YEREVAN, January 10. /ARKA/. USDA MAP Director Jeffrey Engels
participated in the opening of the office space of the new
Agricultural Assistance NGO, Green Lane, on February 8. Green Lane
was established in December 2004. It involves more than 50 members of
MAP-supported farmer groups and cooperatives and will operate in the
field of organic agriculture. According to Nune Sarukhanyan, the
Chairperson of the new NGO, these farmer groups left behind a long
transition period to organic agriculture. Green Lane, inspired and
funded by USDA MAP, now belongs to these farmer groups: Farmer Field
Schools, Local Extension Research Groups, and cooperatives. Mr.
Engels warmly welcomed and congratulated the members of the NGO and
valued their future contribution in the development of organic and
general agriculture in the country. He expressed his willingness to
further provide support to Green Lane. Ms. Sarukhanyan cordially
thanked Jeffrey Engels, Dave Slusser and other MAP consultants for
the moral and financial support in this starting period. The main
goal of Green Lane is to assist farmers in establishment and
sustainable development of farmer groups and cooperatives to produce
high quality and competitive products, thereby increasing incomes of
member-farmers and cooperators. Nune said Green Lane, with its
research potential, funds and close collaboration contacts in the
regions of Armenia, is ready to start its activity. In the first
month of its existence, Green Lane has sufficient investments from
individuals and organizations. The number of the NGO members is

According to him, Azeri military men need to “prove” that they can
settle issues by force. “If they admit that cannot take the lost
lands by force, then their opponents will surely interested in the
reason of that and the administration of defense department will have
no answer”, Sargsian said. He also said that similar statements in
negotiating process are means of pressure not only on Armenian party,
but on mediators as well. “It is not perspective style of work”, he

New press club opens in Vanadzor

New press club opens in Vanadzor

Journalists in the north Armenian city of Vanadzor now have a local
press club to call their own, the Yerevan Press Club newsletter
reported.

The Vanadzor Press Club was launched at a ceremony on February 5.
Representatives from local and national media groups such as
Internews-Armenia and the Eurasia Foundation attended the ceremony.
Boris Navasardian, president of the Yerevan Press Club, donated
several YPC publications for the new club’s library.

The stated mission of the new club is to assist in the establishment
and development of the media in the Lori and Tavush regions of
Armenia. It will also work towards the free dissemination of
information and the protection of journalists’ rights in the country.

The club is an initiative of the Vanadzor branch of the Helsinki
Citizens Assembly, an international group that promotes civil society
development.

MONUMENT TO HOLOCAUST VICTIMS FELL BY ITSELF

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Armenian Police refuted the information on
the act of vandalism regarding the monument to the Holocaust victims
in Yerevan. The examination of the monument showed that the granite
obelisk with 110 cm height and 17 cm width was strengthened with two
iron props at the height of 2.5 meters above the ground. No damages
were discovered on the monument.
