A second-half goal from Romik Khachatryan was enough to seal victory
for Armenia in the basement encounter with Andorra in FIFA World Cup
qualifying Group 1.

Good heart
It was Armenia’s first win in the group and, after taking a point
from their last match with Romania, Bernard Casoni’s men will travel
to the Netherlands for their next test on Wednesday night in great
heart having overtaken Andorra on head-to-head record to go sixth.
The performance at the Republican stadium in Yerevan was particularly
impressive as Armenia were missing captain Harutyun Vardanyan and
top-scorer Artur Petrosyan through injury.

Expected goal
It was all Armenia in the first half and it was no surprise when they
took a 32nd-minute lead as FC Stal Alchevsk forward Ara Hakobyan beat
Andorra goalkeeper Koldo Alvarez. The home side then missed a good
chance to extend their lead nine minutes later as midfield player
Artavadz Karamyan’s header just shaved the post. Andorra had only
managed a single shot on target in the first period so it came as
something of a shock when they levelled the score in the 57th minute.

Long-range winner
Justo Ruiz’s powerful free kick hit the post and bounced back to
create havoc in the home penalty area. Fernando Silva was alert to
the opportunity and was first to reach the ball, heading past keeper
Roman Berezovsky. But Armenia were not to be denied and OFI Crete FC
midfield player Khachatryan scored the winner with a spectacular
long-range drive in the 73rd minute. Andorra are next in action on
Wednesday when they play host to the Czech Republic.

consultation in connection with the elaboration of the EU-Armenia
country action plan within the framework of the New Neighborhood
European policy. Members of the government participated in the
discussion. “We should already decide what we are going to do, what

a very important moment for the country. We may be given an
opportunity of serious assistance in the current reforms, in the
concretization of their future direction and concentrate our power in
their realization being assisted by the EU structures,” RA President
mentioned. According to Robert Kocharian, while choosing the

the accents made recently in the European Commission’s report on
Armenia published lately. According to RA President’s Press Service,
Robert Kocharian assigned the heads of all departments to submit
concrete programs proceeding from the priorities of their spheres
within a 1-month term. They will be discussed in the inter-department

Boxing: Dachinyan eyes title unification

Dachinyan eyes title unification
By Adrian Warren
March 28, 2005

AUSTRALIA’s International Boxing Federation flyweight world champion
Vic Darchinyan is hoping for a world title unification bout in Japan
while his trainer Jeff Fenech warns he has a long way to go in
another sense.

Darchinyan, 29, was today nursing the first cut eye of his boxing
career, after stopping South African Mzukisi Sikali in the eighth
round of his first title defence in Sydney last night.

Following the victory, Darchinyan promptly targeted Venezuela’s
unbeaten World Boxing Association (WBA) flyweight world champion
Lorenzo Parra as his preferred next opponent.

Armenian-born Darchinyan revealed he was very keen to fight in Japan,
where 26-year-old Parra, who has won all 25 of his professional
bouts, has made two of his past three defences.

“I know they give him (Parra) a good rating in Japan and that’s why I
want to take the belt and go and fight in Japan,” Darchinyan said.

“I know many times I have told (Team Fenech matchmaker) Angelo
(Hyder) I want to fight in Japan and he said they don’t know you.

“The WBA title is very popular in Japan and that’s why I want to take
that belt and go and fight there.”

After successive title bouts against southpaws, Darchinyan was also
keen to tackle Parra because the Venezuelan boxes from an orthodox
stance.

“I’m a little bit sick of southpaws, I want an orthodox fighter,”
Darchinyan said.

“I like orthodox, I can come closer. When I fight southpaws, I don’t
know exactly what to do, but with orthodox, I feel very confident.”

While Darchinyan extended his perfect professional record to 23 wins,
18 by KO, both trainers felt he was still far from the finished
article.

“He’s got a lot to work and it’s not just boxing skills, his overall
conditioning,” Fenech said.

“There’s no doubt about Vic and his heart, but there’s a lot more to
it, it’s not getting hit and doing the right thing.

“I just thought he was too easy to hit.”

Sikali’s trainer Harold Volbrecht praised Darchinyan for being
awkward and strong, but felt he would need more than power to beat
champions such as Parra and Thailand’s World Boxing Council world
title holder Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, another of the Australian’s
targets.

“He will have to sharpen up his boxing ability,” Volbrecht said.

“He’s not going to beat everybody with his power and he will have to
start to learn to pace himself and slow down and box and throw more
combinations.”

Meanwhile, Volbrecht revealed details of the problem that led to his
33-year-old fighter quitting in the eighth round despite trailing by
just one point on two of the judges’ cards and three points on the
other.

“Vic gave him a bad cut inside his bottom lip and he was bleeding a
lot inside his mouth,” he said.

“Blood was running down his throat and that’s when he decided to give
it up, because Vic caught him with some good shots.”

Darchinyan said his cut was caused by an accidental head clash, which
he thought was just as much his fault as his opponent’s as “we came
too close together”.

By any name, the Museum of New Art (MONA) is an art gallery known for
creative exhibits and a director who likes to tweak the public’s
sensibilities. The place lives up to its reputation on both counts
with the current offerings.

Four solo shows under the MONA umbrella are spread over two floors of
the Oakland Art Center. Photographers John Cynar and the mysterious
Stig Eklund share one second floor space. Painter Ed Sarkis holds
forth across the hall. Downstairs in a gallery earmarked for emerging
artists is an installation by Audra Wolowiec.

Although the exhibits have topical references, the artists deal with
them individually. For instance, in his series of black-and-white
digital images devoted to the demise of a central city, Cynar avoids
such obvious subjects as burned-out buildings to concentrate on
doorways and windows photographed in Detroit’s Woodward corridor after
midnight. Together, these pictures reflect the sadness and sense of
loss that many Detroiters feel these days.

Cynar, a sculptor turned photographer, also is showing a striking
series of two-part digital images of churches on one side and radio,
cell phone or TV towers on the other side. They are united by overlays
of color.

Sarkis takes on terrorism, war and other political and social
conflicts that mark our times. He works with a restless, probing line
and gestural brushwork to convey images of hooded prisoners in
Afghanistan, riot police in Seattle or the World Trade Center
bombing. The paintings have a universal quality and question the
meaning of humanity.

Now for Stig Eklund, who is billed as a Norwegian photographer; he
takes command of digital technology, creating haunting portraits,
shadowy figures and urban and country landscapes. Some of the
landscapes glow in the dark thanks to luminescent paper.

Eklund, as it turns out, is none other than MONA’s director Jef
Bourgeau, who also excels as a painter, a video artist and a maker of
constructions. By any name, Bourgeau is one terrific all-around
artist.

Darchinyan keeps flyweight title

Australia’s Vic Darchinyan retained his IBF flyweight title with an
eighth-round stoppage of South Africa’s Mzukisi Sikali in Sydney on
Sunday.
The 29-year-old Darchinyan, making the first defence of the title he
won in December, was ahead on all three of the judges’ scorecards.

It was the Armenian-born fighter’s 23rd straight win and his 18th by
knockout.

After the fight, Darchinyan called out WBA champion Lorenzo Parra.
The Venezuelan is unbeaten in 25 fights.

`Armenia Loses Its Pro-Russian Orientation’

`ARMENIA LOSES ITS PRO-RUSSIAN ORIENTATION’

Azg/arm
29 March 05

Mediamax agency informed that Ariel Cohen, senior expert at the
Washington based Inheritance Fund, doesn’t exclude that Russia “will
assist Armenia to destabilize the situation in Nagorno Karabakh.” He
said that “a very unpleasant process for Russia is taking place in the
South Caucasus.”

“Both the government and the population changes its preferences in the
foreign policy, turning to EU and NATO. According to the recent polls,
the majority of Armenia’s population calls for membership to NATO and
the latter’s participation in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement.
They are for Armenia’s membership to EU, as well. Thus, Armenia is
gradually losing its pro-Russian orientation. In order to counteract
and neutralize this tendency, Russia applies some directions of its
policy. Firstly, Russia supports construction of Iran-Armenia gas
pipeline. The second factor is the so-called soft power, i.e. the
Russian culture. This year is declared Russia’s year in Armenia, and
presidents Putin and Kocharian will display the influence of the
Russian culture in Armenia in all the possible ways. The third and the
most important factor is Russia’ s assistance to the Armenians in the
Nagorno Karabakh issue that is of vital importance for them,” Ariel
Cohen said.

He believes that “Now, the US and Russia are playing quite a more
drastic game than they did 2-3 years ago.” “Besides, the situation is
very complicated for Russia, as it would like to have equally good
relations with both Azerbaijan and Armenia. Here, again, the Nagorno
Karabakh issue is put forward,” he stated.

“If Russia took a final choice and decided “to play” against the USA,
I think it is quite possible that Russia assists Armenia in
destabilizing the situation in Karabakh issue, by hindering the
opening of Baku-Tbilisi-Jehyan pipeline,” Ariel Cohen said.

Conference For Caucasian Reconciliation In Ankara

CONFERENCE FOR CAUCASIAN RECONCILIATION IN ANKARA

Azg/arm
29 March 05

Organizers’ Emphatic Affability Towards Armenians Featured it as
Armenian-Turkish

The reconciliation conference of Days of Caucasian Friendship was held
in Ankara on March 18-20. It was organized by the regional clubs of
Rotary International in association with UN representatives of
Rotarian clubs. Delegations from Yerevan, Gyumri, Baku and Tbilisi
clubs as well as Karpis Ter- Yeghiayan from US and Samson Ozararat
from France were invited to the conference.

In view of the facts that the presidents of Rotarian clubs of Yerevan
and Gyumri, Hovsep Seferian and Tigran Beglarian, not only made
reports but also took part in separate discussions being included in
first and second work groups, the Caucasian conference may be called
an Armenia-Turkish one without reserve.

The conference was well organized and aimed at highlighting host’s
attitude towards the Armenian participants. Armenian tunes
accompanying the opening ceremony speak well for the organizers’ mood.

Before we pass on to the work of the conference, let me note that it
was a good chance for members of Yerevan and Gyumri clubs to make
their way to ancient Armenian churches and historic sights of
Cappadocia via Kars-Igdir-Van-Tativan-Nevshehir-Kesaria.

The churches of Arakelots in Kars and Surb Khach of Aghtamar Island
were in poor condition. A tablet on Arakelots church informed,
“Domical mosque, built in 934-936, opened in 1998” and the ornaments
of Surb Khach were either distorted or completely wiped away, let
alone frescos and sanctuary. Karpis Ter-Yeghiayan’s offer to
reconstruct the Surb Khach church of Aghtamar and Ani Cathedral under
the aegis of UNESCO received positive response.

The delegations of Yerevan and Gyumri were warmly welcomed in every
village. Moreover, a group headed by Selahadin Gyonul, president of
Rotary club, arrived in Tativan from Diarbekir to meet them. The
welcome in Ankara was more than warm. It must be noted, though, that
the Turkish Rotarians are an economic power within the country and
have undeniable influence over Turkey’s political circles. This moment
adds to the importance of the conference and underlines its meaning
for future development of Armenian-Turkish relations.

Erhan Ciftcioglu, governor of regional Rotarian clubs, opened the
conference with a short but meaningful speech. He underscored the
importance of reaching progress with small paces, compared the
Caucasus with a “a girl from highlands” who has many admirers,
stressed that the world powers want to see Caucasus united and added:
“We certainly cannot settle centuries-long issues but we are able to
support in their solution. The importance of friendship in Caucasusis
so vital that it cannot be left over to politicians only”.

Ciftcioglu also urged the audience saying: “The purpose of the
conference is not limited to pointing to existing problems in the
Caucasus but to look for ways to overcome them”. The other speakers,
including president of Armenia-Turkish Business Union, Qaan Soyaq, and
Armenian participants followed his example thus creating an atmosphere
of amity in the hall.

Amidst all these, the president of Baku Rotarian club, Ali Musayev,
refused to present his written report that had been previously
introduced to the organizers and stated instead that he meets the
audience halfway. This stepshows that the organizers took measure that
nothing could overshadow friendly moods towards Armenians.

Reasonably, the audience should have appreciated not the content of
his speech but his readiness not to spoil the atmosphere. Conversely,
Seferian and Beglarian made a good impression with their reports. By
the end of the conference a declaration highlighting the importance of
dialogue in the Caucasus and peaceful coexistence in an atmosphere of
mutual trust and reconciliation was accepted. Erhan Ciftcioglu
presented it to the participants as a closing speech.

What’s the reason the reconciliation conference of Days of Caucasian
Friendship was held in Ankara? Qaan Soyaq, one of organizers of the
meeting, indirectly answers this question while evaluating its
result. His feedback was published in March 21 issue of Miliet. Soyaq
voiced an opinion that the situation in the Caucasus has backed
Armenian and Azeri businessmen against the wall and they began looking
for ways out annoyed with such situation. He pointed outthat it should
be an example for Ankara, and Turkey has to give up looking at Armenia
through the prism of Nagorno Karabakh issue.

Moreover, Soyaq posed a question, “Turkey keeps closed its border with
Armenia for 12 years now. What is the result? Did it help the Karabakh
settlement anyhow?” and answers, “No”. Miliet wrote that some
politicians in Ankara agree with Soyaq otherwise they would not have
said that Turkey needs an Armenian policy independent from Azerbaijan.

Qaan Soyaq’s evaluation and Miliet’s conclusions allow to suppose that
Turkey is facing the facts having exhausted its Armenian policy. It’s
turning into imperative for the latter. As far as Turkey needs to
leave its previous positions, the authorities will look for reasonable
preconditions to do that. They need first of all the pendulum of
public opinion swung in their favor. And just then the
non-governmental organizations are caught in the spotlight of the
state.

In other words, Turkey leaves the NGOs to reconsider its Armenian
policy in order to avoid confrontation in the political sphere. The
latter take the pass displaying civil initiative. So, the
reconciliation conference launched as a civil initiative, turning into
means to create preconditions for reviewing Turkey’s Armenian policy
and for forming suitable public opinion.

This civil initiative is undoubtedly to be welcomed if only the
organizers’ hospitality did not change into a demand for
Armenia. Everything has price in the end, especially hospitality.
