United States reiterates call for immediate reopening of Lachin corridor

 17:15, 28 July 2023

YEREVAN, JULY 28, ARMENPRESS. The United States on Friday reiterated Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s call for an immediate reopening of the Lachin corridor to commercial and private traffic.

U.S. Acting Deputy Chief of Mission John Allelo was among the members of the diplomatic corps to travel to Syunik on Friday, the U.S. Embassy said in a statement.

“Acting DCM John Allelo joined the diplomatic corps in Syunik and heard from displaced persons and regional officials about the suffering caused by continued blockage of the Lachin corridor. We reiterate Secretary Blinken’s call for an immediate reopening of the corridor to commercial and private traffic,” the US Embassy said in the statement.

Representatives of the diplomatic corps in Armenia visited on Friday the village of Kornidzor in the Syunik Province where a humanitarian convoy carrying emergency food and medical aid to Nagorno-Karabakh remains blocked by Azerbaijan at the entrance of Lachin Corridor.

The members of the diplomatic corps took stock of the situation on the ground.

Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia and the rest of the world, has been blocked by Azerbaijan since late 2022. The Azerbaijani blockade constitutes a gross violation of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh ceasefire agreement, which established that the 5km-wide Lachin Corridor shall be under the control of Russian peacekeepers. Furthermore, on February 22, 2023 the United Nations’ highest court – the International Court of Justice (ICJ) – ordered Azerbaijan to “take all steps at its disposal” to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.  Azerbaijan has been ignoring the order ever since. Moreover, Azerbaijan then illegally installed a checkpoint on Lachin Corridor. The blockade has led to shortages of essential products such as food and medication. Azerbaijan has also cut off gas and power supply into Nagorno-Karabakh, with officials warning that Baku seeks to commit ethnic cleansing against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. Hospitals have suspended normal operations.

Armenia requested the Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh to escort the aid. Armenia has also requested Azerbaijan to not obstruct the convoy.

On Thursday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Azerbaijan would only corroborate Armenia’s fears that Baku seeks to commit genocide in Nagorno-Karabakh if the convoy gets blocked.

US-based StopAntisemitism organization ‘horrified’ by article published in Azerbaijani newspaper

 17:44, 28 July 2023

YEREVAN, JULY 28, ARMENPRESS. An article published by the Azerbaijani AzerNews media outlet has been strongly condemned by StopAntisemitism, a US-based organization fighting and exposing anti-Semitism.

“StopAntisemitism is horrified to see a newspaper in Azerbaijan publish this. Adolf Hitler massacred 6 millions Jews and 5 million others. The word “humanist” and his name do not belong in the same sentence. Shame on you AzerNews,” StopAntisemitism tweeted after the Azeri media outlet published the anti-Armenian article with the outrageous headline ‘Hitler is more humanist than any Armenian leader in history’.

Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe Arman Khachatryan, reacting to the headline, called on the Council of Europe to urge Azerbaijan to take decisive measures to cease state-sponsored hate speech, racial, ethnic and religious intolerance towards Armenians.

“This is deplorable display of hate speech, clearly racist content and praisal of Nazism. Council of Europe should urge Azerbaijan to take decisive measures to cease state sponsered hate speech, racial, ethnic&religious intolerance towards Armenians,” Khachatryan tweeted.

In a statement released Friday, Burić expressed ‘extreme concern’ about the ‘serious humanitarian and human rights situation’ in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“I am extremely concerned about the serious humanitarian and human rights situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and my thoughts go to the residents who are bearing the brunt of this situation. I strongly reiterate my previous calls to restore the free movement along the Lachin corridor. I draw attention to the interim measures indicated by the European Court of Human Rights concerning the Lachin Corridor seven months ago. I also call on both sides to engage in a genuine dialogue with a view to rapidly ensuring free and safe passage through the Lachin corridor. This dialogue should lead as well to de-escalating tensions and restoring peace, also in line with the commitments undertaken by Armenia and Azerbaijan upon acceding to the Council of Europe more than 23 years ago,” Burić said in the statement.

German lawmakers condemn Azerbaijani blockade of Lachin Corridor, call for urgent reopening

 20:26, 28 July 2023

YEREVAN, JULY 28, ARMENPRESS. German lawmakers have called for an immediate reopening of the Lachin Corridor, which has been blocked by Azerbaijan for nearly 8 months, resulting in a humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“The Lachin Corridor must be opened,” Member of the Bundestag Renata Alt (FDP) tweeted. “The fact that even the transfer of humanitarian aid by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh has become impossible is unacceptable. It is necessary to pressure Azerbaijan so that the situation doesn’t escalate,” Alt, the chairwoman of the Bundestag Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid added.

Robin Wagener, a Member of the Bundestag and Coordinator for Intersocietal Cooperation with the Southern Caucasus, the Republic of Moldova and Central Asia at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany said that he is following the humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh with deep concern. “All actions must be based on the welfare of the local population, and we must be guided by this. This includes the guarantee of uninterrupted and safe routes of transport of persons and goods, including of Lachin Corridor,” Wagener, who heads the Bundestag delegation to the OSCE PA, tweeted.

Member of the Bundestag Merle Spellerberg, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and rapporteur on South Caucasus of the Alliance 90/The Greens faction, underscored that "any blockade of the Lachin Corridor by Azerbaijan must immediately end."

"Human lives cannot become geopolitical levers,” Spellerberg added.

Europeans for Artsakh: Silent protest held outside European Council seat in Brussels

 21:42, 28 July 2023

BRUSSELS, JULY 28, ARMENPRESS. A silent protest was held today in the heart of Brussels, in front of the European Council building, where demonstrators urged President of the European Council Charles Michel and the international community to pressure Azerbaijan to end the illegal blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) which has resulted in a humanitarian disaster.

The silent protest was organized by the Armenian community of Belgium as part of the Europeans for Artsakh pan-European movement initiated by the European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD). The EAFJD brought together Armenian community leaders from various European countries for a meeting, who then launched the movement.

Protesters walked with children to the European Council and handed over a letter addressed to Charles Michel, the President of the European Council.

In the letter, the representatives of the Armenian community of Belgium appealed to the EU leadership to take immediate action by imposing sanctions on Azerbaijan and intervene to apply pressure on Azerbaijan to end the illegal blockade.

Protesters were holding posters saying “30,000 children in Nagorno-Karabakh have no access to food and medication,” “228 days of illegal blockade and 43 days of total siege,” “Indifference of international community is killing our children,” “120,000 Armenians held hostage in Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijan.”

Karen Tadevosyan, the president of Belgium’s Armenian Community Assembly who coordinated the silent protest, told ARMENPRESS Brussels correspondent Lilit Gasparyan that the movement’s goal is to unite the potential of the Diaspora and provide unconditional support to the Republic of Artsakh and its people to protect their right to self-determination. The representatives of the initiative and the demonstrators are convinced that collective efforts and concrete support by the EU can play a decisive role in ending the blockade and alleviating the suffering of those affected.

Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues Co-Chairs Statement Calling for Immediate International Action to Prevent Humanitarian Crisis in Artsakh

Congressman Frank Palone, JR

Press Release

Washington, DC – Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues Co-Chairs Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06), Gus M. Bilirakis (FL-12), David G. Valadao (CA-21), and Adam B. Schiff (CA-28) released a statement today calling for immediate actions to be taken by the international community to address the months-long blockade of the Lachin Corridor by the Aliyev regime.

“The people of Artsakh are facing an unfathomable humanitarian crisis at the hands of the Aliyev regime. Because of the Azeri blockade of the Lachin Corridor blockade, food is dwindling, medical supplies are limited, and essentials for daily life are dangerously low,” the lawmakers stated. “The international community has sat on the sidelines for far too long, watching as this crisis has escalated to a critical point where the lives of tens of thousands are currently at risk. Meanwhile, President Aliyev has faced zero consequences for his brutal campaign to force Armenians in Artsakh off their historic lands.

“This is the definition of ethnic cleansing. The international community must utilize all diplomatic tools available to halt the blockade, open this vital lifeline, and prevent a catastrophic humanitarian crisis from unfolding. We call on the Biden Administration to act immediately and help bring this deliberate and calculated crisis to a peaceful end.”

Armenians in the South Caucasus are continuously threatened by the destabilizing, brutal actions of the Aliyev regime. The blockade of the Lachin Corridor for over seven months is risking the lives and livelihoods of over 120,000 people in Artsakh, and the prevention of aid from going through the corridor is bringing the humanitarian crisis to a head. It is exacerbating the humanitarian crisis caused by Azerbaijan’s deadly 2020 invasion of Artsakh that killed 5,000 and forced more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians to leave their homes. Azeri forces continue to harass, detain, and kill individuals in Armenia and Artsakh, while also falsely declaring Armenian territory as their own.
