Armenia expects Baku to clarify territories it thinks are Azerbaijan’s

PanARMENIAN.Net – Yerevan has urged Baku to specify which territories they mean when they speak about the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev said earlier that the main expectation of Azerbaijan is the recognition of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan by Armenia.

Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan said on Friday, April 30 that there is nothing unacceptable in the proposal of mutually recognizing each other’s territorial integrity by Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“We also said that Armenia and Azerbaijan recognized each other’s territorial integrity in the early 1990s. The Nagorno-Karabakh issue is not a territorial issue for us, but an issue of security and rights for the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh,” Grigoryan said, according to Armenpress.

“But some statements by a number of high-ranking Azerbaijani officials need to be clarified. In the context of these statements, we believe that the Azerbaijani officials should specify which territories they see in the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan so that Armenia could clarify its position.”

Artsakh can never be a part of Azerbaijan, state minister reiterates

The position of Artsakh’s government and people on its status remains unchanged, Artsakh State Minister Artak Beglaryan said on Saturday.

“Artsakh can never be a part of Azerbaijan. Moreover, we are all ready to face any short and long term deprivations and trials, but we will never deviate from our path,” he wrote on Facebook.

The official highlights that their stance has been publically revealed and repeatedly presented to the international community and the Armenian authorities.

“No one can afford to deviate from that course, while the Armenians who have different views should simply respect the will and right of the Artsakh Armenians to decide their own fate in their homeland,” Beglaryan noted.

“The right of the indigenous people of Artsakh to self-determination is above all other norms of international law and geopolitical interests. Meanwhile, the principle of territorial integrity of Azerbaijan has nothing to do with the right to self-determination, which, incidentally, is enshrined in the Madrid Principles approved by the mediation mission of the OSCE Minsk Group, hence by the international community.

“To this is also added the impossibility to live under Azerbaijani rule amid genocidal policies and further existential threats, which the international community should also recognize unconditionally, as it did, for example, in the case of Kosovo.

“The path we have taken is difficult and long, but it is value-based and just, and no one has the right to betray the struggle and the spilled blood of our holy ancestors, fathers and brothers as well as to fiddle with the fate of the future generations,” the official said.

Lawyer Arsen Babayan, a senior member of the opposition Homeland Party, urged people to join a big opposition rally to be held in Yerevan on 1 May as part of a protest campaign aimed at toppling Nikol Pashinyan and his cabinet.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Babayan denounced the release of the police officer whose car hit and killed a young pregnant woman, Sona Mnatsakanyan, while escorting Nikol Pashinyan’s motorcade in Yerevan earlier this week.

“Are we going to tolerate the pro-Turkish authorities? Are we going to allow the Turks to make decisions in our homeland? Of course no!” Babayan wrote.

“We have stood up to oust the pro-Turkish authorities and to preserve the Armenian identity. Armenian nation, stand up! We are going to get rid of them once and for all. Let’s all gather at France Square on May 1, at 4pm. The final and decisive stage [of the protest campaign] is starting,” he said.

Armenia –

MP Gegham Nazaryan of the opposition Hayastan bloc took to Facebook on Saturday to denounce the release of a police officer, who was involved in a deadly crash while escorting Nikol Pashinyan’s motorcade in Yerevan earlier this week.

Major Aram Navasardyan’s vehicle struck and killed a young pregnant woman, Sona Mnatsakanyan, when she was crossing a street in the city. He did not stop after the accident to help the victim.

The officer was arrested a few hours later. However, he was released from pre-trial custody on Friday after being charged with violating traffic rules.

Whereas, Nazaryan highlighted, many oppositionists, including Narek Mantashyan and Kajaran Mayor Manvel Paramazyan, remain in custody on frivolous charges.

“For a very long time, three MPs, including Armen Charchyan, Artur Sargsyan and Mkhitar Zakaryan, as well as Goris Mayor Arush Arushanyan and his deputy were arrested in a flagrant violation of the law,” he wrote.

The MP also pointed to the detentions of young opposition activists holding protests in Yerevan for a week now.

ArmInfo. Azerbaijan continues violating international law and the relevant points of the trilateral statement of November 9, 2020, keeping the Armenian POWs and  civilians, Armenian FM Ararat Mirzoyan stated at a news conference  held jointly with his Georgian counterpart Ilya Darchiashvili.

He pointed out unsolved humanitarian problems in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“An especially grave problem is Azerbaijan changing the identity and  destroying the Armenian cultural and religious heritage in the  territories under Azerbaijan’s control after the 44-day war. The last  example is the desecration of the Holy Resurrection church in Hadrut.  A visit of a UNESCO fact-finding mission to the region is extremely  important for preventing further acts of vandalism,” Mr Mirzoyan  said.

ArmInfo. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has commented on Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s statement that the border delimitation and demarcation process with Armenia will be based on maps dated to 1918 to 1991, the year the  USSR disintegration. Aliyev claimed that some maps dated to 1918-1920  show Yerevan and Syunik as part of Azerbaijan.

“We do not object to cartography. But why should we restrict  ourselves to the 20th century? We could start with maps drawn in  Babylon in the 6th century BCE, or by Herodotus in the 5th century  BCE, or by Strabo in the 1st century CE, or by Claudius Ptolemy in  the 2nd century, or by Pliny the Elder during the same period – and  continue with numerous Latin, Byzantine, Arab, and other geographical  descriptions and maps of later periods. Armenia has no fear of not  finding itself on those maps,” Mr Mirzoyan said in an interview with  the Armenpress news agency.

However, being interested in the effective work of the forthcoming  Commission on demarcation and border security, the Republic of  Armenia believes that this work should be based on maps that are  accepted by both sides and have legal force.
