YEREVAN, APRIL 29, ARMENPRESS. Armenia strongly condemns the acts of vandalism and desecration of the St. Harutyun Church in the city of Hadrut, that came under the control of Azerbaijan after the 2020 war, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahan Hunanyan said in a statement released over the St. Harutyun Church in Hadrut.

The statement says:

“We strongly condemn the acts of vandalism and desecration of the St. Harutyun Church in the city of Hadrut, fallen under the control of Azerbaijan.

These pre-planned actions carried out by the authorities of Azerbaijan, aimed at destroying and desecrating the identity of Armenian religious, historical and cultural monuments in the territories under the control of the Azerbaijani armed forces, are another manifestation of Azerbaijan’s ethnic and religious intolerance and the continuation of the policy of depriving Artsakh of Armenians and the Armenian trace.

The atrocities against Armenian churches and other cultural and religious monuments in Artsakh grossly violate the norms of international law, including the decision on application of provisional measures issued by the UN International Court of Justice on December 7, 2021.

This case reaffirms the claims of the Armenian side on the urgent need for the visit of UNESCO assessment mission to Nagorno Karabakh”.

Armenia not afraid not to find itself on any maps: FM Mirzoyan responds to Aliyev

Public Radio of Armenia

The President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev stated yesterday that the process of clarifying the borders with Armenia will be implemented on the basis of all the maps of 1918 and the once that existed before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and that according to some of the maps of 1918 to 1920, Yerevan and Syunik were allegedly part of Azerbaijan.

“We are not against the research of the maps. But why consider only the 20th century? We can start from the maps created in Babylon in the 6th century BC, or by Herodotus in the 5th century BC, or by Strabo in the 1st century BC, or created by Claudius Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD, or from the maps created by Pliny the Elder in the same period, and then to continue with numerous Latin, Byzantine, Arabic and other geographical descriptions and maps of later periods. Armenia is not afraid not to find itself on those maps,” Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said in response.

“However, being interested in the effective work of the forthcoming Commission on demarcation and border security, the Republic of Armenia believes that this work should be based on maps that are accepted by both sides and have legal force,” Mirzoyan said in comments to Armenpress.

Armenian FM briefs Georgian counterpart on Artsakh issue

Public Radio of Armenia

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan briefed his Georgian counterpart Ilia Darchiashvili on the situation around the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Armenia’s position on the processes aimed at establishing regional peace and stability, and on the negotiations on a comprehensive peace agreement with Azerbaijan.

In this context, Minister Mirzoyan underlined the mediating role of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmanship in advancing the peace process aimed at the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“I should mention that humanitarian issues remain unresolved. In violation of international humanitarian law and the provisions of the November 9 Trilateral Statement, Azerbaijan continues to illegally hold Armenian prisoners of war and civilians hostage,” the Armenian Foreign Minister told reporters following his talks with Georgian counterpart.

“The desecration and destruction of the identity of the Armenian cultural and religious heritage by Azerbaijan in the territories fallen under the control of Azerbaijan as a result of the 44-day war remain of particular importance. The latest such example is the desecration of the St. Harutyun Church in Hadrut. For the prevention of these recurring cases of vandalism, currently the visit of the UNESCO assessment mission to the region remains urgent,” Ararat Mirzoyan said.

Iran reaffirms stance on inviolability of Armenia’s borders

PanARMENIAN
Armenia –

PanARMENIAN.Net – Iran’s ambassador to Yerevan Abbas Badakhshan Zohouri has reiterated his country’s stance on the inviolability of the internationally recognized borders of Armenia and urged all countries to respect its sovereignty.

The Azerbaijani side has on multiple occasions spoken about a so-called “corridor” through the southern Armenian province of Syunik that would connect Nakhijevan to the rest of Azerbaijan. The Armenian side, however, has repeatedly denied being involved in negotiations for the provision of a corridor to Azerbaijan, stressing that they have only agreed to unblock transport communications in the region.

“We do not accept statements about corridors around the communication channels, we think that Armenia should preserve its territorial integrity,” Zohouri said during a discussion about the Consulate of the Islamic Republic set to be opened in the province of Syunik.

The ambassador also noted that despite close cultural ties, economic relations between the two countries are not at the desired high level, and efforts should be made in this direction.

Karabakh raises Kosovo’s privilege, lauds Putin’s reference

PanARMENIAN
Armenia –

PanARMENIAN.Net – Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) State Minister Artak Beglaryan has raised the question of why Kosovo can take advantage of the international mechanism of salvation and redress, while Artsakh can’t.

Beglaryan noted on his Telegram channel that it was nice to hear Russian President Vladimir Putin speak to UN Secretary General António Guterres about the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on Kosovo, which concluded that “the declaration of independence of Kosovo adopted on 17 February 2008 did not violate international law”.

Noting that Kosovo had declared independence in 2008 without consulting Serbia, Putin asked Guterres whether he agreed that provided a precedent for the two Donbas “republics” to declare independence without permission from Kyiv, and for Moscow to recognize them (as many western countries recognized Kosovo). However, Russia’s ambassador to Serbia, Alexander Bocan Harchenko, said later that Russia has not changed its attitude towards Kosovo and will not recognize it as an independent state.

According to Beglaryan, Putin’s reference to Kosovo was a precedent for peoples who live under the threat of destruction and fight for their right to self-determination, such as the indigenous people of Artsakh.

“And here’s a rhetorical question: why should Kosovo or other internationally unrecognized countries use this international mechanism of salvation and redress, while Artsakh, which meets all the norms of international law, does not? We should not forget the numerous cases when the international community did not fulfill its preventive duties, as a result of which a number of nations were subjected to genocide,” the State Minister said.

Armenia offers Babylon-era maps to Azerbaijan to demarcate borders

PanARMENIAN
Armenia –

PanARMENIAN.Net – Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has responded to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev statement that the process of clarifying the borders with Armenia will be based on all the maps beginning from 1918 and to those that existed before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Aliyev maintained that according to some of the maps of 1918-1920, Yerevan and the province of Syunik were allegedly part of Azerbaijan.

“We are not against researching maps. But why limit ourselves to the 20th century? We can start from the maps created in Babylon in the 6th century BC, or by Herodotus in the 5th century BC, or by Strabo in the 1st century BC, or created by Claudius Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD, or from the maps created by Pliny the Elder in the same period, and then to continue with numerous Latin, Byzantine, Arabic and other geographical descriptions and maps of later periods. Armenia has no fear of not finding itself on those maps,” A.

However, given that we are interested in the effective work of the future Commission on demarcation and border security, the Republic of Armenia believes that this work should be based on maps that are accepted by both sides and have legal value.

Aliyev has said on numerous occasions that the Armenian capital of Yerevan, Sevan and Syunik are all “historical lands” of Azerbaijan.
