President Serzh Sargsyan’s New Year message

President Serzh Sargsyan’s New Year message

00:01 01.01.2013

Dear Compatriots, Year 2012 came to its end. First and foremost, it
was a year of hard work, a year for creation and life. In 2012, almost
thirty-three thousand young people in our countries started families,
filling our Motherland with the blessings of the wedding and love. Let
year 2013 bring happiness and security to the Armenian hearths. In the
passing year, the Armenian land heard over forty thousand newborns
crying. Forty thousand babies with their eyes full of surprise and
smiles looked upon for the first time at the Armenian sun and warmed
that sun with their laughter. More than forty thousand new citizens of
Armenia; it is our generation, our common happiness.

Let 2013 bring clear skies to all our children. Let homes of the
Armenians fill with the raptures of babies’ cries, and let mothers
have peaceful glee. In 2012, thirty-six thousand kids of our large
family for the first time entered the temple of knowledge. They sat at
the school desk and opened the textbook. Let 2013 bring all necessary
knowledge for asking questions and searching for answers. The future
of our country, our own future primarily depends on the education of
the children, the citizens of tomorrow, on their will and ability to
create.

In 2012, drafted were ten thousands of our sons. Army called them to
forge them as men, defenders of the land and pillars of the families.
In 2012, strength of our sons’ hands and their discipline, potent
minds and vigilance kept our borders intact and our Motherland safe.
Let years 2013 and 2014 bring them safe duty, keep them out of harms
way. Let our boys come back home safe and sound, let they bring peace
to our land. In 2012, thousands of the Armenian citizens found jobs or
started businesses. Thanks to its children’s efforts, our country made
another step forward: The farmer’s toil and artist’s outburst,
scientist’s inquisitive mind and the guts of the businessman. Let 2013
bring new jobs, new fervor and new hope to all. Let success crown our
efforts. Let the New Year breath in fresh air into our large family,
which is ready to work hard for its children, which knows the ways to
respect and glorify, which knows the ways to give and take, which
knows the ways to defend borders and the Motherland, which knows the
way to love.

Dear Fellow Citizens,The passing year has been a trying one
particularly for our brothers and sisters in Syria. I wish resilience
and courage to those who found refuge in the Motherland and to those
who remain in Syria. God willing, the bloodshed will stop soon and
peace will come to that friendly country and for the people of Syria,
including our compatriots, the life will be back to normal again.

Dear Friends, We are entering the New Year with new hopes and great
expectations of progress. We are confident that Armenia’s political
and economic course is right and serves the interest of our nation.
Certainly, there are things to amend, and we will do it together. Let
year 2013 come, let it walk in hundred thousands of our doors,
confident and jolly, let it bring laughter and happiness, security and
peace, vigor and warmth to hearts, also work and fair diligence, and
boundless love to our great family, to everyone.
Happy New Year and Holly Christmas!’

Armenian president visits defensive positions

Armenian president visits defensive positions

22:30 – 31.12.12

Armenian President, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces
Serzh Sargsyan visited on Monday the defensive positions on the
occasion of the New Year and Christmas.

The Armenian leader was accompanied by Catholicos of All Armenians
Garegin II and Minister of Defense Seyran Ohanyan. President Serzh
Sargsyan talked to the soldiers about their problems.

The Armenian president congratulated the servicemen on the New Year
and thanked them for self-sacrificing service. `The Armenian warrior
is a status. He is not necessary supposed to be in the trenches or
carry a tommy gun. It is important that a person feel himsef as a
soldier of the Homeland. I think there is not a higher rank or greater
happiness than being a soldier of your Homeland. I have seem much
though I am not so old – my people’s hardship, loss of many of my
friends, destruction of settlements. I have seen everything. Loyalty
and treachery of friends. But, truly, there is nothing greater than
serving the Homeland. I want you, dear warriers, to live your life
being well aware of this. Our people has been living for a very long
time in this land. We have had ups and downs on this way. But we are
and, I am sure, will always be. We exist because most of our leaders,
clergymen and ordinary people considered themselves soldiers. Among
our neighbors were people that were much greater than we both in
number and might. We can recall at least a score of peoples that
passed into history because they were not soldiers of their nation and
their Homeland. We will exist forever because many of us consider
themselves soldiers of our Homeland,’ President Serzh Sargsyan said.

The Armenian leader awarded presents to a number of distinguished soldiers.

President Serzh Sargsyan also met with residents of the village of
Areni, talked to them and congratulated them on the coming holidays.

ISTANBUL: 2012: Divisions exacerbated ` democracy not consolidated

2012: Divisions exacerbated ` democracy not consolidated

26 December 2012, Wednesday

SUAT KINIKLIOÄ?LU
[email protected]

The end of the Gregorian calendar year is fast approaching and we have
not surprised anyone by creating yet another controversy by what we
see in the aftermath of the launch of the Göktürk-2 satellite last
week.
The country has been divided between those who favor a heavy response
to the approximately 200 Middle East technical University (METU)
students and those who feel the police response has been excessive. A
good number of universities have made declarations, fully
demonstrating the deep divisions about the fundamentals of this
country.

As we are drawing to the end of the year it is most pertinent to make
a brief assessment of what 2012 meant for our political body. The year
2012 has been full of disappointment and frustration. Contrary to the
public’s expectations Parliament was unable to draft a new
constitution. Progress has been at a snail’s pace. The ruling party
does not understand that a consensus can only be reached when it deals
with the opposition in a dignified manner. The `wedge politics’
strategy may produce 50 percent support for the AK Party but it does
not bode well for a social contract that we desperately need.

Strangely, the style, manner and content of the current political
discourse do not reflect a government that won three consecutive
elections. For a long time, the ruling party has managed to be in
government and against the system at the same time. As all fortresses
of the regime have been `conquered’ there seems to be lack of purpose
evident in the government’s actions. Hence, a withdrawal to core
Islamist issues, such as a mosque to Çamlıca, criticism of a soap
opera, heavy emphasis on the Middle East versus little interest in
carrying Turkey into the EU.

In 2012 the divergence between President Gül and Prime Minister
ErdoÄ?an has become more visible. Gül made it clear that he does not
intend to retire or get a job abroad. He is not losing any opportunity
to make his views known and share his vision with domestic and
international audiences. Ankara is very tense due to the
unpredictability of the succession issue in 2014.

The Kurdish issue has gone into an awfully wrong direction. The
tension between the government and the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP)
has reached enormous proportions. Tomorrow will be the first
anniversary of the Uludure/Roboski incident and we will probably again
see how debilitating the incident in itself has been on the psychology
of Turkey’s Kurds. The government clearly miscalculated and
underestimated the impact of this incident. The psychological
distancing of Turkey’s Kurds is continuing at the expense of our
social peace.

The rare positive story of 2012 which must be registered is the calm
and predictability in the Turkish economy. Deputy Prime Minister Ali
Babacan continues to project confidence and disciplined management of
the economy. Thanks to him and his team the Turkish economy is doing
well during such turbulent times. It would be a very different
political discussion if the economy was also in a mess as our
political climate currently is.

The fact that we see increasing signs that the Assad regime is losing
the civil war in Syria is of course a positive development. However,
so much blood has been wasted, so many lives turned upside down, so
much regional and sectarian tension unleashed it is hard to be
celebratory about the gradual decline of the Assad regime.

All in all, 2012 has been a year I am most eager to leave behind. I
wish I could be optimistic for the year ahead. I am afraid we will
continue to see the polarization and tension continue in 2013. When
Samuel Huntington defined Turkey as a `torn country’ in his seminal
work in 1993 I fervently objected. These days, I tend to agree with
him.

ARFD to get carte blanche after presidential vote – paper

December 28, 2012 – 15:24 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – According to Hraparak daily, ARF Dashnaktsutyun
supreme assembly hosted a meeting Wednesday, December 16.

`Those present insisted on nominating own presidential candidate.
However, following Hrant Margaryan’s statement that joining the race
only to lose will make no sense, with 4-5% of votes gained to serve no
purpose, the party members gave in,’ the daily said.

Margaryan’s position was supported by 48 ARFD members out of 80.

`After the elections, ARFD will get a carte blanche in many issues and
official seats.
