Armenian citizen and his wife are still at large

The policemen, who severely beat Arman Davtyan and his wife, are
still at large, the statement of the Helsinki Committee of Armenia
(HCA) says.

“On 14 July 2011 Arman Davtyan and his wife were taken to the Mashtots
department of the Armenian Police. They spent the whole night at the
police, they were even provided no opportunity to use a telephone.
Moreover, several people severely beat Davtyan with rubber truncheons
and, as a result, broke the fingers of his left hand. Afterwards
Davtyan underwent electric shock. Violence was also applied against
his wife, who was released only after the desirable testimony had been
received. The horrible actions also continued in the carcer”, the
statement says.

The statement also says that the special investigation service refused
to institute a criminal case despite the obvious proofs, and the first
instance court (judge G.Karakhanyan) and the Cassation Court stated
that there was no sufficient ground to institute criminal proceedings.
“No proper investigation is being conducted. The state bodies of
Armenia failed to exert efforts to reveal the merits of the case”, the
statement says. At the moment, the case is at the Court of Appeal.

To note, the press service of the Armenian Police refused to give any
comments on it, saying that the Court of Appeal is investigating the
case.

A PLEASANT AFTERNOON BEETHOVEN TO BABADJANIAN

SONUS Piano Quartet returns to The Independent Theatre in North Sydney
for their second concert, The Passionate, on Sunday afternoon.

The 3.30pm concert will take listeners on a musical journey across
three centuries, savouring three national flavours from Beethoven’s
early chamber music to the work of two 20th-century composers.

The three works include Beethoven’s 1798 String Trio in G Major, Op.9
No.1, Spanish composer Joaquin Turina’s 1931 Piano Quartet in A minor,
Op. 67 and Arno Babadjanian’s 1952 Piano Trio in F sharp.

Turina’s piano quartet embodies the refined chamber music writing he
experienced in Paris in the early 1900s.

Babadjanian’s piano trio is rich in Armenian folksong and reminiscent
of Rachmaninov and Khachaturian in its musical expression and
grandeur.

Violinist Aiko Goto appears courtesy of the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Freelance violist Jacqui Cronin has played with Australia’s best
ensembles and orchestras and cellist Timothy Nankervis is a member of
the Sydney Symphony and Seraphim Trio.

Pianist Brenda Jones is a frequent recital partner to other musicians
in the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Sydney Symphony.

Jones said The Independent’s acoustics and “magnificent piano” make
it “the perfect venue” for the Sunday afternoon concert series.

Music historian Michael McGregor will give a pre-concert talk with tea
and scones about the composers and their music.

YEREVAN. – Armenia should rule out the membership to hypothetical
Eurasian project, head of the European Movement Armenian organization
Victor Yengibaryan told Armenian News-NEWS.am commenting on the
Russian Speaker Sergey Naryshkin’s statement that Armenia’s leadership
is following closely the development of the Eurasian project and is
working to determine its place acknowledging that Eurasian economic
area is a basis for trade and economic relations.

`If Armenia is following Europe, simultaneous membership to the
Eurasian project is simply impossible. The Armenian Government has
clearly stated that as there are no borders with Russia, membership in
the customs union, which is a part of the project, is impossible. This
position should be confirmed later as well,’ Yengibaryan said.

To note, the Russian Speaker Naryshkin stated on Monday that he had
discussed perspectives of developing Armenia-Eurasia cooperation in
the framework of Eurasian integration project with the Armenian
authorities.

WITH THE SUPPORT OF ORANGE FOUNDATION AND THE ARMENIAN EYE CARE PROJECT 2,000 PEOPLE BENEFITED FROM MEDICAL SERVICES IN SYUNIK REGION

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 14:45:19 – 27/07/2012

The joint initiative of Orange Foundation and the Armenian Eye Care
Project (AECP) implemented in Syunik region in July came to its end.

The initiative aimed at organizing free eye screenings for the
population of the region, as well as treatments for socially vulnerable
people.

In the scope of the initiative 2,000 adults have undergone eye
screening in their regional medical centres, 400 out of which have
undergone thorough screening in Mobile Eye Hospital (MEH) and 940
glasses have been provided. 200 eye surgeries and laser treatments
have been realized in MEH.

“Completing our mission in Syunik region, with joy we assert that
jointly with the Armenian Eye Care Project we could be helpful to
many people and bring sight to their eyes. As a telecommunication
operator our mission is to facilitate communication between people,
therefore, communication impairments have always been in the centre of
our attention and people with such impairments under the care of Orange
Foundation. With joy we assert that our partnership will be ongoing
and this initiative will be implemented in other regions as well,
as it brings real changes into people’s life,” said Bruno Duthoit,
Chairman of the Board of Orange Foundation.

“We are pleased to note that it is already the 9th year that this
initiative “Bringing Sight to Armenian Eyes” has become something of
a regular nature for the considerable bulk of the population of the
country. In the scope of this initiative we have already realized and
will continue realizing eye screenings and treatments for population.

Our partnership with Orange Foundation is of great importance for us,
as this partnership gives us the possibility to develop larger scale
activities. It is not a mere action. It is an important possibility to
provide quality eye care services to our population. We are happy to
have Orange as our partner in Syunik as well,” said Nune Yeghiazaryan,
Country Director of the Armenian Eye Care Project.

Orange Foundation has allotted 7,300,000 AMD for implementation of
this initiative in Syunik region.

It is worth adding that in partnership with Orange Foundation AECP
will carry out its activities in Armavir region in September-October.

Additional information on this will follow later.
