Defense Ministry silent about bullets found in injured soldier’s body

November 27, 2010 | 12:28

Investigative service at the Armenian Defense Ministry neither refutes
nor confirms the reports by Zhamanak daily saying a bullet from
another weapon was found in the body of Manvel Hazroyan injured in the
November 19 incident. `We do not comment on this information,’ Meri
Sargsyan, spokesperson for investigative service at the Armenian
Defense Ministry, told NEWS.am. She also did not disclose details of
the preliminary investigation, noting that investigation is underway.

Today the Zhamank newspaper wrote that Armenian Defense Ministry did
its utmost to reshuffle off the responsibility upon soldier Manvel
Hazroyan, who allegedly had fired at the soldiers and then failed a
suicide attempt. According to the newspaper’s sources, a
re-examination of the soldier’s body revealed a bullet from another
weapon, besides his own. It proves others also fired at Hazroyan.

Manvel Hazroyan, injured in the recent armed incident in the Armenian
army, claiming lives of 4 servicemen and wounding 4 others, was
charged under Article 104, part 2 (assassination of one or more
persons), 34- 104 part 2, paragraph 1 (assassination attempt of one or
more persons), Article 365, part 1 (violation of military service
rules).

According to the Armenian Defense Ministry he pleaded guilty.
Presently he undergoes treatment in military hospital of Stepanakert.

President Sargsyan’s visit to Turkmenistan ends: Berdymukhammedov to
travel to Armenia next year

President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan was paying official visit to
Turkmenistan on November 24-25 on the invitation of his Turkmen
counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov.

President of Turkmenistan met President Serzh Sargsyan in
international airport of Sapamurat Niyazov. The President had a short
talk and later the leaders of the two states had discussion at Serzh
Sargsyan’s residence. Then the Presidents had wide format discussion
where the delegations from the both parties were engaged.

According to reports the negotiations were constructive, comprehensive
and effective. Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Gurbanguly
Berdymukhammedov declared later they had talks on reinforcing
bilateral ties in economic and social life, in regional and
international affairs.

The agenda of Armenian-Turkmen negotiations could be anticipated from
the delegation accompanying President Serzh Sargsyan – Minister of
Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandyan, Minister of Energy and natural
Resources Armen Movsisyan, Minister of Economy Nerses Yeritsyan,
Minister of Culture Hasmik Poghosyan, Minister of Diaspora Hranush
Hakobyan, Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan.

Huge cooperation potential exists in economy field

According to RA National Statistical Service in 2009 trade turnover
between Armenia and Turkmenistan was $17,3 million. Armenia exported
products and service of $3 million and Turkmenistan important that of
$14.3 million.

Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov took into
consideration those figures when declaring that unused potential still
existed. While the businessmen declared that the potential is real
huge.

During President’s official visit to Turkmenistan, Armenian-Turkmen
business conference and exhibition was organized. Many Armenian
companies of banking, construction materials, logistics, agriculture
and different other fields represented their products and service to
their Turkmen colleagues.

The Presidents referred to the aspects of the economy the development
of which could be bilaterally beneficial for the sides. The Turkmen
side signified Armenia’s capacities in machine industry, chemical
industry, pharmacy, agriculture and food industry. President Sargsyan
referred to Turkmenistan’s energy capacities.

President Sargsyan made a business proposal to his Turkmen counterpart
– to import energy from Turkmenistan to Armenia. The suggestion was
hailed and correspondent representatives of the field were recommended
to study the perspectives of the idea.

It seemed the idea could never been carried out, but energy experts
clarified that by involving Iran into this program it could be
successfully implemented.

President Sargsyan made another business proposal to found trade
chambers in Armenia and Turkmenistan. The results of Ashgabad hosted
business conference and the exhibition are evident that this
suggestion could as well be well developed.

Armenian-Turkmen relations have a history of centuries

During the official visit necessity to reinforce communication in
humanitarian, education and scientific fields was underscored.
Documents aimed to reinforce those ties were signed.

President Serzh Sargsyan stated that cooperation in humanitarian field
is of great significance, and that the documents signed are effective
starts which surely needed to be developed. President signified
holding of years of culture in Armenia and Turkmenistan and gratefully
recorded that days of Armenian film were being hold in Turkmenistan
during his visit.
Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov particularly signified
the historic-cultural centuries-od relations of Armenia and
Turkmenistan.

15-year-old consistent neutrality
In the agenda of Armenian-Turkmen bilateral ties foreign policy and
international affairs of mutual interests are signified. In this
respect Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov signified
cooperation to meet modern challenges. He underscored fight against
trans-national organized crimes, illegal circulation of drugs and
international terror.

President Serzh Sargsyan made his remarks congratulating Turkmenistan
for 15th jubilee of neutrality. Neutral and balanced disposition of
Turkmenistan to many international risk issues is the country’s
practical policy. In this respect, President Sargsyan hailed
Turkmenistan’s neutral disposition adopted towards Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict. President underscored that Turkmenistan has never signed any
international document against Armenia.

The Presidents expressed certitude that the conflicts should be
settled through peace. They underscored the crisis and conflicts
should be solved through peace only, and that war isn’t a solution to
the conflicts.

On the second day of his visit President Sargsyan had more like
procedural meetings in Mejlis, visit to mausoleum of first Turkmen
President, etc.

President Serzh Sargsyan invited his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly
Berdymukhammedov to pay visit to Armenia. President of Turkmenistan
accepted the invitation and said he would travel to Armenia next year.

Literary Criticism a la Turca

Literary Criticism a la Turca

27/11/2010 09:16:00 By ZAFER YÖRÜK

Nobel Laureate V.S. Naipaul said in an interview back in 2001 that the
conversion of the South and East Asian peoples into Islam had negative
effects on them, comparable to the effects of colonialism. In revenge,
a Muslim-Turkish philosopher, supported by a lynch mob and Turkish
security authorities, did not allow him in Istanbul, where Naipaul was
scheduled to address the preliminary meeting of the European Writers
Parliament (EWP).

This controversy inevitably evokes the memory of similar events in
recent history, some of which I will outline below.

In 1989, a fatwa (Islamic verdict) was issued sentencing the novelist
Salman Rushdie to death by the Spiritual Leader of Iran, Ayetullah
Khomeini. The fatwa was effective particularly among the British
Muslim communities of South and East Asian origin. Copies of Rusdie’s
novel `Satanic Verses’ were burnt in Muslim British demonstrations and
major bookshops were forced after a series of bombings to withdraw the
copies of this novel from their shop-windows and bookshelves. Since
then, Rushdie has been forced to live under protection.

`Satanic Verses’ was immediately translated into Turkish after its
first publication in English in 1988 but could not find a publisher.
In 1993, Aziz Nesin, the greatest modern Turkish satirist, decided to
publish excerpts from the Turkish translation in his column in a daily
newspaper. In July 1993, Nesin participated in a literary festival in
the central Anatolian town of Sivas, in remembrance of the 16th
Century Alevi poet Pir Sultan Abdal.

Naipaul observes the following on the fall of the Sindh province in
India to Muslim conquest in the 8th Century: `The king of Sindh
resisted quite well. Then one day it was reported to him how the
invaders said their prayers in unity as one man, and the king became
frightened. He understood that this was a new force in the world, and
it is what in fact Muslims are very proud of: the union of people.’
This critical commentary on the history of the Islamisation of Asia,
which the Muslim-Turkish scholars find offensive, resembles to what
happened on 4 July 1993 in Sivas.

A thousands-strong fanatic Islamist mob gathered in front of the hotel
in town square, where Nesin and hundreds of participants of the
festival were hosted. They chanted `God is Great!’ `as one man’ and
then set the hotel on fire. Sivas police watched the event from a
distance and nobody in the government ordered the military units to
charge the mob for the protection of the festival guests.

Nesin survived the attack but thirty three participants of the
festival, including poets, writers, literary critics and musicians,
suffered a horrible death. These thirty three gems are the rather
ironic martyrs of Ayetullah Khomeini’s fatwa against Salman Rushdie,
and their families and friends still do not know where to seek
compensation for their loss.

Similar attacks on writers with religious and/or nationalist motives
have continued to our day. Most importantly, prominent Armenian
writer/journalist Hrant Dink was murdered on 19 January 2007. Prior to
his assassination Dink had been sentenced by a Turkish court for
`degrading Turkishness’; during the trial he had been threatened
outside the courtroom by the senior members of the Turkish `deep
state’, including General Veli Küçük and lawyer Kemal Kerinçsiz.

The `best pen of Turkish literature’, Orhan Pamuk, was also subject to
similar judicial, semi-official and Mafioso threats and attacks. The
reason for this Turkish style `literary criticism’ was Pamuk’s
statement during an interview that `one million Armenians and thirty
thousand Kurds were killed in Turkey’. As a result, the one and only
Turkish Nobel Laureate had to flee his country for America; since
then, he has been forced to pay only occasional `clandestine’ visits
to Istanbul.

Most recently, Yugoslavian filmmaker Emir Kusturica had to leave
Turkey, during a film festival, under threats to his life. The threats
were issued by the high authorities, including the Minister of
Culture, who argued that a man who denies genocide against Muslims has
no place in Turkey – presumably because you can only have a place in
Turkey if you deny the genocide against Christians, as 72 million
Turkish citizens are forced to do.

The source of the mounting threats against Naipaul, the chief
Turkish-Muslim philosopher Hilmi Yavuz, has showed relief after the
cancellation of the Nobel Laureate’s visit to Turkey: `He would be
anxious to appear in front of the people whose religion he degraded’.
Indeed, `anxious’ is the word: Prior to his assassination, Hrant Dink
wrote that `My heart moves like an anxious dove’.

Religious fanaticism marked the history of Medieval Europe, the most
prominent symbol of which is the Inquisition. It was the heyday of
fanatic Christian `philosophers’, judges and lynch mobs who
traumatized thousands of people around Europe through torture and
execution sessions in public. The victims were exclusively charged
with `degrading Christianity’. Naipaul’s `philosophically condemned’
criticism of Islam implies that contemporary Muslims demonstrate a
degree of intolerance comparable to Medieval Christian Inquisition.

It is far beyond my knowledge to evaluate the world of Islam in
accordance with this claim. Nor, do I have any intention to engage
here in a criticism of the Western colonial influence on Naipaul’s
worldview. But an observation of the recent history of `literary
criticism a la turca’, including Hilmi Yavuz’s `philosophical
criticism’ of Naipaul, supported by a lynch mob, exclusively affirms
the novelist’s critical points on Muslim intolerance at least for this
country.

Azerbaijani experts alarmed by Panorama.am publications

Yerevan press club and Azerbaijan’s journalists’ union made joint
studies in Armenian and Azerbaijan internet resources about media
coverage of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations. The survey results were
introduced today in Agveran. Panorama.am reporter tells that the
studies are made since 2005.

Media reporting of four internet resources – Panorama.am, lragir.am,
a1plus.am and panarmenian.net, made from January-June unveiled several
alarming, unacceptable statements for the Azerbaijani experts.

Expert of Yerevan press club Armen Nikogosyan said, the Azerbaijani
have understood they are on equal level with Armenians regarding
anti-propaganda campaign, while 5-10 years ago the situation was
different.

Azerbaijani experts are alarmed by `Azeri’ word and by
Azerbaijani-Karabakhi conflict, as they consider it as
Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict.

Our neighbor experts are concerned that Armenian media report
anti-Armenian propaganda has state support in Azerbaijan.
A. Nikogosyan said Azerbaijani experts have mostly met those alarming
facts in the publications of Panorama.am.
