ANC-Glendale to Host Teenagers and the Law Community Forum

Glendale, CA – The Armenian National Committee of Glendale in partnership
with Der-Parseghian Law group and Document Preparation solutions will host a
free educational forum for parents and students entitled “Teenagers and the
Law”. The event is scheduled to take place Wednesday, May 11, 2011,

91204).

“We are thrilled to partner with Der-Parseghian Law Group and Document
Preparation Solutions on this very important endeavor, which will provide
parents and students a thorough explanation of laws pertaining to teenagers
and most importantly the rights parents and students have within the
judicial system and our local school district,” commented ANC-Glendale
Executive Director, Elen Asatryan. “Too often, we see young adults on the
other side of the law because they just didn’t know. We hope to increase
awareness and provide direction to our community’s most vulnerable subset,
our children,” added Asatryan.

Forum will inform parents and students on laws pertaining to age of
majority, privacy, social networking, supervision, parents’ rights, driving,
parties, alcohol, smoking, curfew laws, drugs, emancipation, weapons, as
well as parents’ and students’ rights within the Glendale Unified School
District. The event is open to the public and will be conducted in English
and Armenian.

“It’s gratifying and worthwhile to administer community workshops and inform
parents, grandparents and youngsters on issues that influence their daily
lives. When a business genuinely gives back to a community; every person
gets empowered in a sense of appreciation, reliance and social inclusion,”
noted, Arick Gevorkian of DPS, Inc.

Coach Trouble: Ararat Legend Faces "expulsion" From Armenian Footbal

COACH TROUBLE: ARARAT LEGEND FACES “EXPULSION” FROM ARMENIAN FOOTBALL
By Suren Musayelyan

ArmeniaNow
02.05.11

Andreasyan has been banned from performing his official duties at
Ararat for ten games.

A prominent Soviet-era Ararat player who now manages the club
playing in Armenia’s top division is facing an expulsion from the
local football life after his violent conduct condemned by media,
fans and the wider sporting community.

Arkady Andreasyan, 63, who, as a midfielder, helped the Yerevan club
win the USSR championship and the Cup in 1973, has been banned from
performing his official duties at Ararat for ten games after allegedly
assaulting a young reporter during an Armenian Premier League game
late last month.

In explaining the April 23 incident through his spokesman
Andreasyan implied he had been provoked into that kind of behavior by
Totalfootball.am photo journalist Ashot Arushanyan who, according to
him, had been taking pictures of him without having an accreditation
or any other explicit permission to do that work.

The 19-year-old photo reporter was hospitalized with injuries after
being allegedly punched by Andreasyan and his guards and the coach
was later questioned by police over the incident, according to media
reports.

Local sport journalists have condemned the beating of their colleague,
which, they said, also constituted obstruction to his professional
duty, and Ararat fans have reportedly called for Andreasyan’s
resignation as the team’s head coach and vice-president over “bringing
the club’s name into disrepute.”

While the infamously bad-tempered coach is facing more questions
from law enforcement, the Football Federation is considering the
proposal from its disciplinary committee to declare Andreasyan a
“persona non-grata” in Armenian football.

Andreasyan himself appears to have shunned media since the committee’s
April 28 decision that also included a 250,000-dram (about $670)
fine against FC Ararat.

Meanwhile, playing without their controversial coach, Ararat managed
to end their losing streak of five league games with an away 1-1 draw
against Gyumri’s Shirak at the weekend.

The result still leaves Ararat at the bottom of the eight-team league’s
standings with only two points in seven games.

Premier League leaders Ulysses are still under pressure from reigning
champions Pyunik and the season’s surprise package Gandzasar Kapan
after losing at home to Impuls.

In Round 7 Gandzasar beat Banants 2-0 and Pyunik lost to Mika 0-1. Now
the two are, respectively, one and three points behind Ulysses. The
Kapan team is to take on the leader in Yerevan in the next round
scheduled for the coming weekend.

information and statistics on the 2011 Premier League).

AUA Increases its Capacity to Enroll More Students and Initiate New Academic
Programs

Last week, a shipment of 450 new high-quality student chairs, as well as
office desk chairs and equipment for the Acopian Center for Environment
arrived at the Yerevan campus of the American University of Armenia (AUA).
The chairs, purchased in the US and shipped to AUA with the help of the
United Armenian Fund, will be used in the newly refinished and furnished
classrooms of the university’s original building. The complete renovation
of this building, along with the recent opening of a new campus building,
has upgraded and substantially increased the university’s capacity to enroll
more students and initiate new academic programs.

It has been two and a half years since AUA opened a new, state-of-the-art
building, the Paramaz Avedisian Building (PAB), on its Yerevan campus. This
construction was made possible by significant contributions from the
Avedisian family, the Manoogian Simone Foundation, the TF Educational
Foundation, and many other past and present supporters of AUA. The PAB is a
four-story, 108,000 square foot building designed to accommodate the latest
in classroom video, computer, and telecommunications equipment.

The renovation and furnishing of the classrooms and offices, as well as the
upgrade of AUA’s information technology infrastructure in the PAB was made
possible by a grant from USAID’s American Schools and Hospitals Abroad
program. This grant also included replacement of all old windows in the
original building, installation of air conditioning system, improvement of
network connectivity, purchase of desktop computers, printers, notebooks and
software. These infrastructure improvements were necessary for the
furtherance of AUA’s mission to develop as a learning institution that
introduces new and transformational methodologies for training and educating
future leaders and entrepreneurs in Armenia and the surrounding region.

By increasing its classroom space and improving its facilities, AUA will
have the capacity to more than double its current enrollment, and also to
welcome new students from outside of Armenia, in order to create a more
diverse campus environment. The university also aims to expand adult and
professional education programs and to host more academic conferences, to
reach a wider audience.

The entire AUA community expresses its gratitude to The Lincy Foundation,
the United Armenian Fund and USAID for their past and present support to the
university, and for their assistance and cooperation in advancing education
in Armenia through AUA.

On Forecasts

ON FORECASTS
Gagik Terteryan

02.05.2011

The efficient activity of our political elite assumes adequate expert
service. In particular, political leadership must have an opportunity
to receive from the expert community the elaborations concerning:

~Upatterns and peculiarities of the history of Armenia and Armeniancy
(“knowledge of past”); ~Uintellectual and economic potential
and problems of the national society, taking into consideration
the factor of multiculturalism, multilingualism and adherence to
various confessions of some part of the Armeniancy; ~Usocial and
economic, demographic and domestic political situation in the RA,
NKR and Javakhq; ~Ucontent and orientation of the military and
political processes in the region; ~Ulogics and tendencies of global
civilizational, geopolitical, macro-economic and social processes
(“adequate perception of the world order”); ~Upossible developments
and scenarios in military-political, social-economic and other spheres
in short-term, mid-term and long-term outlook (“knowledge of future”).

Such kind of work implies more orderliness and availability of
appropriate expert community which is possible only under the
consolidation of the resources of the entire Armeniancy with the
usage of possibilities of modern informational and communicational
technologies.

At the same time the efficient activity of the expert and research
community is possible only when national and political elite:

~Udefines clearly formulated goals to the implementation of which the
whole Armeniancy should tend, ~Uforms necessary and optimally arranged
“critical mass” of the intellectual resources, ~Uprovides positive
feedback with the expert community and political elite.

Let us single out among the aforementioned issues those to which,
despite their topicality, today, in our opinion, not enough attention
is paid.

Forecasting of possible geopolitical developments. This issue is
especially topical, as Armenia is involved in military and political
processes of regional and global character. Those processes are:

~UThe process of recognition of the status of the NKR and the
Armenian Genocide by the international community and the relations
with Azerbaijan and Turkey in this context; ~UThe issue of Javakhq
and issues of transport communications connected with it, complicated
relations between Russia and Georgia; ~UConfrontation of Iran with
Israel and US which directly affects Armenia; ~URadicalization of
political and national orientation in Turkey, actualization of the
Kurdish issue and relations with the Turkish republic in this context.

As a result of being involved in regional and global developments,
Armenia is very sensitive in the aspect of the current process of
formation of the multi-polar system. It is also known that multi-polar
system is less rigid and less controlled structure that is why it
tends to local conflicts and geopolitical shifts, i.e., there are more
preconditions for risks for Armenia. So, it is obvious, that in order
to implement efficient foreign policy both situational forecasting
and evaluation of possible developments in the future, revealing of
the tendencies, forecasting and drafting scenarios are necessary.

Forecasting of possible social transformations. Alongside with the
changes in the global political realities in modern world large-scale
changes in social sphere are also taking place. Mainly due to the
permanently ongoing informational and communicational revolutions the
content of inter-personal, social, intra-national and international
relations has changed.

Today the shift of the democratic societies to “post-democratic” ones
is taking place. Here the tendency of decreasing of the role of the
state and increasing of the role of the big business can be observed.

As a result of those processes in globalized network
internet-communities new, virtual forms of democracy appear and
formation of a “virtual human” (homo virtualicus) is taking place.

Those changes, according to some researchers, may even acquire
revolutionary form, the rudiments of which can be observed not only
in developing countries but also in Europe. It is obvious that all
those processes cannot but affect Armeniancy without any geographic
restrictions.

It is natural that under such dynamic conditions the efficient
managing of the state and society is possible only with the usage
of data about evolution of the national and public consciousness and
main trends of its transformations.

On the methods of researches. The researches in the aforementioned
spheres are supposed to be carried out in the following way:

~UTo analyze in the context of the national interests the forecasts
and scenarios elaborated by leading research centers which concern
the developments in the aforementioned spheres of both global and
regional scale. This function should be undertaken by a group of
specially chosen analysts.

~UTo order works on forecasting to the restricted number of experts
(no more than two experts in each sphere) who will be chosen in
accordance with the criteria set in advance. Such a method, which is
implemented in order to economize the resources, can conditionally be
called “Focus Delphi” as, unlike “Delphi method”, it does not require
involvement of a big number of experts. The works are carried out
by the experts from Diaspora and Armenia with the involvement of
appropriate specialists of the leading world centers.

~ULogical, comparative and content analysis of the acquired results.

~UComplex discussion of the results with the usage of interdisciplinary
approaches and “brain storming” methods.

~UOn the ground of the discussions resulting documents are drafted and
conception for the implementation of the next stage of the researches
is elaborated.

~UThe resulting documents and recommendations based on them as well
as the plans of further researches are submitted to the heads of
the state and national structures which are responsible for decision
making on the level of Armenia and Armeniancy.

~UPart of the materials is published in the form of the an annual and
is widely spread over the information space (based on the concepts
of “future formation” through the information on the futuristic
forecasts).

TCA Arshag Dickranian School’s Eighth Graders Visit
Washington D.C. and New York

Los Angeles, May 2, 2011 – The 8th grade students of TCA Arshag Dickranian
School had a very unique Easter Vacation this year visiting New York City,
Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. The six day trip was organized by Maro
Travel Teck and took place from April 16th through April 22nd. The
students were escorted by their home room teacher Miss Alvard Uzunyan,
along with Principal Vartkes Kourouyan, his wife Alice and some thirty
parents.

As a part of the educational curriculum, this is the second year that the
school organizes the trip for its 8th graders during the Easter Vacation
to give them the opportunity to observe these locations, so they can
visually learn about the historical and significant sites of the Nation.

The first day of the trip was spent in New York City where students got
the opportunity to explore various historical and world renowned places,
namely the Empire State Building, the United Nations Headquarters,
Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Plaza Hotel and Fifth Avenue. The second
day being Palm Sunday, the students first visited St. Vartan Armenian
Cathedral to light their candles and offer their prayers. The students
then continued their excursion, visiting the Statue of Liberty, Wall
Street, New York Stock Exchange and the World Trade Center’s Ground Zero,
where students paid their respects to the lives lost on that ignoble
September 11, 2001.

On the third day of the trip, the group boarded their bus heading towards
Philadelphia. While there, the students visited the historic Old Capitol
Building, the Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, not forgetting to
enjoy savoring the Philly steak sandwiches before bidding farewell to the
city of friendship.

The fourth day of the trip was spent in Washington D.C., touring the
significant sites of the Nation’s Capital, such as the White House,
Capitol Hill, The Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam
Veterans Memorial, World War II Memorial and the tomb of the Unknown
Soldier. The fifth and sixth days of the trip started with a stop at the
Arlington National Cemetery, President John F. Kennedy’s tomb, followed by
the Smithsonian and Air Space Museums. A special highlight on the fifth
day was visiting the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia.

On the last evening of the trip, the students surprised the Principal,
Mrs. Alice Kourouyan and Miss Alvard Uzunyan with a small party at the
Marriot Courtyard Gaithersburg to show their appreciation.

Upon their return, the students found their week long excursion very
enjoyable and informative, whereas parents expressed their high level of
satisfaction about the way the program was organized.

Located at 1200 North Cahuenga Blvd., Los Angeles, the TCA Arshag
Dickranian Armenian School is a federally tax exempt, Pre-K to 12th grade

Ccaf Met With President Sarkozy

CCAF MET WITH PRESIDENT SARKOZY

Jean Eckian
Paris

On Wednesday, May 4 the French Senate will examine the bill penalizing
denial of Armenian genocide. The question was brought up by the
Socialist Party.

However, following the French government statements indicating that it
does not support this bill, a major concern was spread in the ranks
of the Armenian community, relayed by the French press noting the
“anger of the Armenians”.

Despite the support of the majority of the Socialist party, communists
and some senators of UMP, the watchword of government may block
the adoption of the bill. For this reason the delegation of the
Coordination Council of Armenian Organizations in France (CCAF)
met with President Sarkozy on Saturday.

The Head of the French State indicated to the representatives of
the CCAF, Mourad Papazian and Ara Toranian that ‘the government will
leave the Senate free to determine its vote, without instruction by
the presidential majority’, reiterating his commitment to the need
of fighting denial of the Armenian genocide in France.

The delegation included the former minister Patrick Devedjian
and the president’s son Jean Sarkozy, as well as Levon Sayan, the
representative of Charles Aznavour.

Earlier on April 27, the Hurriyet had reported that a Turkish
delegation was coming to Paris to make pressure on the French senators.

On May 4, the Armenians will hold a demonstration in front of the
French Senate.
