Chess: FIDE Confirms Aronian’s Top Status Before Candidates’ Matches

CHESS: FIDE CONFIRMS ARONIAN’S TOP STATUS BEFORE CANDIDATES’ MATCHES
By Suren Musayelyan

ArmeniaNow
02.05.11

Aronyan is ranked third in the list of Top 100 Chess Players.

Armenia’s top grandmaster Levon Aronian remains one of only three
current chess players with a FIDE rating of above the 2800 mark,
confirming his highest status at Candidates’ Matches beginning in
Russia later this week.

According to the latest statistics released by the sport’s
international governing body on May 1, the 28-year-old Armenian chess
ace is ranked third in the list of Top 100 Players with a rating of
2808 – next to current world champion Viswanathan Anand from India
and Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, who, respectively, boast of ratings as
high as 2817 and 2815.

In the absence of Carlsen at the World Candidates’ Tournament due in
Kazan, Russia, on May 4-26, Aronian is thus considered a favorite to
win the right to challenge Anand in the 2012 World Chess Championship.

Aronian’s immediate rival in Kazan is Russian grandmaster Alexander
Grischuk (ranked 12th on the FIDE May 1 list), against whom the
Armenian has a favorable record in 28 career games – nine victories
against the Russian’s five.

The best-of-four quarterfinal match is scheduled to start on May 5
and will include tiebreak options of rapid, blitz and even Armageddon
games. The winner of the Aronian-Grischuk match will progresses to
the semifinal to meet the winner of the Vladimir Kramnik (Russian)
v Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan) quarterfinal match. The other two
quarterfinal pairs are Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) v Gata Kamsky (USA)
and Boris Gelfand (Israel) v Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan). This
second pool of four players will produce the second finalist for the
best-of-four decisive match. The tournament’s total prize fund is
420,000 euros (more than $620,000), according to organizers (check
here for other details ).

Remarkably, Aronian’s seconds at the Kazan matches will be Sergei
Movsesian and Gabriel Sargissian, who are, respectively, 35th and 79th
on the current FIDE Top 100 Player list that also includes 71st-ranked
Vladimir Akopian. (Traditionally in chess, like in old-fashioned
duels or in modern-day boxing matches, seconds are aides in charge
of ensuring fair play).

Aronian is approaching this major competition in his career in the
capacity of the reigning World Blitz Chess Champion after winning
the title in a highly competitive tournament in Moscow, Russia,
last November. So far this year Aronian has won only one tournament
(the 20th and final edition of Melody Amber blindfold/rapid chess in
Monaco in March).

The Armenian grandmaster’s previous attempt to become a challenger
to the holder of the world chess crown in 2007 ended in a failure
as he finished only seventh out of eight players in the candidates’
tournament.

(Check FIDE’s official website for the latest news and
announcements relating to the Candidates’ Matches as well as its
ratings section for Armenia-related statistics, including on female
players, and chess-playing nations’ current rankings).

From Court To Court: GALA TV Keeps The Fight For Its Right To Air

FROM COURT TO COURT: GALA TV KEEPS THE FIGHT FOR ITS RIGHT TO AIR
By Siranuysh Gevorgyan

ArmeniaNow
02.05.11

Gyumri’s GALA TV Company intends to appeal to the Court of Cassation
against the verdict by the Civil Court of Appeals according to which
it has been given one month to dismantle its broadcast equipment from
the TV tower.

One of the four TV channels broadcasting in Armenia’s northern
Shirak province, GALA, founded in 2005, is a rare television company
in Armenia critical of the government and providing air time to
representatives of various opposition factions. It is the only TV
Company that largely covered the 2008 post-election opposition rallies.

Problems came fourth because of GALA’s dispute with the municipality
of Gyumri which in November 2007 privatized the TV tower and demanded
that GALA’s broadcast equipment be dismantled.

On the issue of the TV tower (only GALA is using it) a court verdict
was announced by the general jurisdiction court of Shirak province
yet in April 2008 (in favor of the municipality). GALA then turned
to the Court of Appeals which, however, agreed with the initial
verdict. The Court of Cassation (the highest in the three-instance
civil judicial system of Armenia) however annulled the verdict saying
that the principle of equality between the parties had been violated –
the court had deprived GALA’s attorney of a chance to present evidence
in defense of the case.

In an interview with ArmeniaNow, GALA’s Executive Director Karine
Harutyunyan said that the tower did not have an owner before the
municipality’s privatization.

“We had repeatedly tried to privatize it, but were not granted
permission. We were told that the tower is of strategic importance,”
said Harutyunyan.

She said that the verdict of the Court of Appeals did not come as
a surprise to them, and after exhausting all the judicial means in
Armenia they intend to turn to the European Court of Human Rights.

In 2009 GALA filed a lawsuit with the European Court concerning the
penalty it had to pay after a tax audit at the company. GALA was able
to pay the $73,000 penalty only due to a fund-raising telethon.

La Crescenta, CA.- In the spirit of ” The Year of the Armenian Child ” the
Students of Lark Conservatory and the Crescenta Valley Armenian Church Youth
Group will present an afternoon of Armenian poems and music and a video
presentation dedicated to this special occasion on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 1
pm, following the church services, at Armenian Apostolic Church of Crescenta
Valley, located at Western Prelacy’s ” Dikran and Zarouhi Der Ghazarian ”
Hall, at 6252 Honolulu Ave., in La Crescenta, California.

On January 1, 2011, His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of
Cilicia, had designated 2011 as the ” Year of the Armenian Child.” In his
Pontifical Message His Holiness has noted, “…childhood is a critical
stage, during which one’s character is built and the future course of one’s
life is determined. The Armenian children are the children of the nation and
church. Therefore, let’s jointly take the Armenian children under our care,
wipe the tears of the Armenian children, relieve their pain, minimize their
suffering, and in practical terms contribute to their sound physical and
moral, spiritual and national growth and education. Let us not ever forget
Christ’s commandment: ‘ And who so shall receive one such little child in my
name receiveth me” (Matthew 18:5)”’

Lark Musical Society is dedicated to nurturing the Armenian musical arts
within a matrix composed of Armenian culture and Western classical music.
Under the auspices of Lark and its dedicated director Mr. Vatche
Barsoumian, these goals are realized through three independent but
integrated areas of activity: Education, Performance and Publication.
Through these activities, Lark helps to promote a deeper understanding of
Armenian music from local to international levels, shapes a new generation
of professional Armenian musicians and music lovers, and, in integrating
these within the broader Los Angeles-area music community, ensures the
preservation of our artistic past and the perpetuation of our cultural
patrimony. The Lark Musical Society supports the “Lark Conservatory” whose
students participate, throughout their matriculation at the academy, in
various public functions such as the present program.

Approximately 25 to 30 Armenian students, raging from 13 to 17 years of age,
attend CV Church’s weekly Bible Study sessions in La Crescenta, under the
tutelage of Very Reverend Father Barthev Gulumian. The Church Youth Group
will demonstrate a brief video presentation on the Ten Commandments. Through
a series of short vignettes involving the teens, the significance as well as
relevance of the Ten Commandments, as how they can be applied to real life
and daily situations, will be conveyed to the audience.

The program, “An Afternoon of Armenian Poems and Music” Dedicated to “The
Year of the Armenian Child” is to inspire and appeal to both young and older
audiences alike and therefore the general public is invited to attend to
this special celebration and public service event.

The admission is free. There will be a free reception before start of the
program.

"They’Ve Turned St. Gevorg’S Into A Funeral Parlor"

“THEY’VE TURNED ST. GEVORG’S INTO A FUNERAL PARLOR”
Grisha Balasanyan

hetq
10:09, May 2, 2011

Residents of Noragavit, a Yerevan district, are complaining that
their local church is slowly turning into a veritable assembly line
for religious funerals.

Locals claim that services for the repose of souls (hogehangist in
Armenian) are being conducting two and even three times a week at the
St. Gevorg Church, even on days when regular congregants are expected
to visit. It just happened this past Palms Sunday, for example.

Last year, pupils who visited the church on the closing day on school,
were shocked to see a funeral casket with the deceased inside when
they visited to say prayers.

Noragavit resident Sergey Hovhannisyan, who says that his ancestors
helped build the church, laments the current situation and says he
happened upon the funeral ritual on Palms Sunday.

“I entered the church to place flowers at my favourite spot and noticed
a black curtain had been strung up. Thinking this was the place for
flowers I slowly approached and was startled out of my wits when a guy
walked out and demanded to know what I was doing. I slowly backed off.”

Sergey believes that many rich and powerful families use the church to
bury their dead out of the spotlight and that the parish priest, Father
Mkrtich Tovmasyan, is paid $1,000-2000 for each service he performs.

Residents say that they are not opposed to hogehangist services inside
the church but that a separate chapel should be built on the church
grounds where the entire funeral service can be performed.

They even sent petitions signed by 800 residents to Etchmiadzin on
two separate occasions.

Father Vahram Melikyan, Director of the Mother See’s Public Affairs
Department, told Hetq that the petitions had been answered but couldn’t
say if they ever reached Noragavit.

When I approached Father Mkrtich for his side of the story he asked
me for the name of the resident who had sent me and then politely
advised me to drop the story.

“I would suggest that you not get involved for the matter has been
reviewed by the president, prime minister and the Catholicos. This is
the law of the church. We return to our roots in the end. The church
is just not about happiness. The church is also for the deceased.”

Seeing that I was going ahead with the article, Father Mkrtich decided
to exert some psychological pressure by saying that I would be sinning
against the church and that to have any dealings with a clergyman or
the church I needed to be above reproach.

He then went on to note that many top officials, including the
president and prime minister had attended funeral services at the
church for the brother of former Minister of Justice Gevorg Danielyan.

Father Mkrtich also stressed that the Catholicos was aware of what
was going on and that the word from Etchmiadzin was law.

“Even the ruling government coalition is informed and what they say is
congratulations for getting back to our roots,” Father Mkrtich told me.

The priest believes that the protestors have nothing better to do and
that most don’t even know where the doors to the church are. He even
hinted that some might be mixed up in religious cults.

Father Mkrtich says that it would be great if a nearby medieval chapel
gets restored for the services but that it would cost $500,000. Sergey
Hovhannisyan thinks the priest isn’t being sincere and that the church
is pretty well endowed right now.

“They don’t want to restore the chapel because donations from the rich
would dry up. It’s a business they’re running here, not a church,”
Sergey says.

When I asked Father Mkrtich what fees he charges for the repose
service, he answered that it was up to the family. He preferred not
to respond when I inquired what the biggest “contribution” he ever
received was. “Let’s not talk about amounts. No one is interested,”
he said.

Noragavit resident Nina Azizyan says an atmosphere of fear reigns in
the church and that people are scared off by the site of the deceased.

“We want to pray inside the church but can’t because of the bodies.

What is the priest up to by bringing bodies inside? Is it a convenient
way to make money?” she asks.

Volodya Sedrakyan is another local who hasn’t gone to the church in
quite awhile or else attends services at a neigh boring church. The
reason is the same.

“There’s a body inside the church almost every day,” he says, adding
that it turns people off.

Razmik Aslanyan, who lives near the church, also disagrees with what
is going on and prefers not to attend St. Gevorg.

“They’ve turned the place into a funeral parlour. I’ve started to
lose respect for our Catholicos. It was a tradition in olden times
to place the deceased in the church because back then the church was
the only cool structure around. Today, they just do it for the money.”

Hetq sent off a letter to the Ararat Diocese, conveying the discontent
of Noragavit residents.

It was Father Mkrtich Tovmasyan who responded.

Since parish priest don’t receive wages, he wrote, most of the fees
for services like the hogehangist go to cover their living expenses.

The tiny amount left over goes to the upkeep of the church and grounds.

In his response, Father Mkrtich again counselled for understanding
and compassion for the deceased and that even in death they remain
part of the church and cannot be shunted.

He ruled out the possibility that hogehangist services could ever be
performed outside the church, in a separate building.

“It would be the same as performing a marriage or baptism in the
church courtyard at not inside, before the holy altar.”

Increased Tension On Contact Line Pursues Political Goals – Expert

INCREASED TENSION ON CONTACT LINE PURSUES POLITICAL GOALS – EXPERT

Tert.am
02.05.11

Keeping the situation tense on the contact line, Azerbaijan is
attempting to focus its society’s attention on the issue, an Armenian
expert has said.

At a news conference on Monday, military expert David Jamalyan spoke
of Azerbaijan’s recent activeness on the contact line with Karabakh.

He said the country is always preparing for war, but its attempts to
focus public attention on the issue has a domestic political context.

“This is of course a form of exerting a psychological pressure on
our country. It can be seen as an attempt to impose tolerance and
concessions on the public. But tolerance is not admissible given their
aggressive maximalist position, so Armenia also has to do something
to change the Azerbaijani society’s ideas about war, as well as the
[armed] forces of Armenia,” he said, calling on Armenians to be
prepared for a war against the Azerbaijani society.

He further noted that Azerbaijan uses belligerent rhetoric in an
attempt to influence the negotiation process over Karabakh.

“International organizations try to maintain a balance in such a
situation, but everybody is aware of the world community’s attitude
to war,” he said.

Analyst of the Caucasus Institute Sergey Minasyan noted in turn that
threats do not directly imply a war. He said a conflicting party
can launch military operations without a prior warning, once it
considers itself prepared for a war. He added in the meantime that
sniper attacks on the contact line do not affect politics in any way.

“Azeris will naturally keep pursuing this strategy unless they realize
that the threat of war has exhausted itself. And the incidents will
continue unless they get a worthy response,” he said, adding that
Azerbaijanis are not prepared for war.

Experts: Military Balance Between Armenia, Azerbaijan Unchanged

EXPERTS: MILITARY BALANCE BETWEEN ARMENIA, AZERBAIJAN UNCHANGED

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 2, 2011 – 14:28 AMT

Military psychologist David Jamalyan said the military balance between
Armenia and Azerbaijan remains unchanged.

“A successful blitzkrieg is possible only if one of the parties
possesses a military superiority. Today Azerbaijan lacks such
superiority over Armenia,” Jamalyan told a press conference in Yerevan.

“On the contrary, Armenia has a considerable superiority in some
weapons, specifically in the air defense system,” he said.

Thus, according to Jamalyan, provocations at the line of contact
will continue, but the possibility of resumption of hostilities has
significantly lessened.

Head of the political studies department at the Caucasus Institute,
political analyst Sergey Minasyan said for his part that Azerbaijan is
well aware of the high price it will have to pay for a new war. “The
balance of military forces has not changed. But the Armenian armed
forces exceed those of Azerbaijan from the qualitative perspective,”
Minasyan stated.
