FAAE Prepares Complaint Against Azerbaijan

FAAE PREPARES COMPLAINT AGAINST AZERBAIJAN

Ashot Grigorian, President of the Forum of the Armenian Associations
of the Europe (FAAE) has prepared a complaint-application to be sent
to the embassies accredited in Slovakia.

The complaint calls for the attention of the international community
to Azerbaijan’s ongoing illegal actions which periodically leave
Armenian servicemen killed along the line of contact between Karabakh
and Azerbaijan armed forces.

The FAAE President is annoyed that Azerbaijan openly violates the
truce after bilateral or multilateral diplomatic meetings between
Armenian and Azerbaijani officials.

Last week, Azerbaijani snipers killed three Armenian servicemen
and injured another while EU Commissioner for Enlargements and
Neighbourhood Policy, tefan Fule, and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary
of State for Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, Tina S.
Kaidanow, were in Armenia on a regional visit.

“The FAAE demands that the European leading countries and the
international community prevent further incidents along the contact
line and suspend the activity of Azerbaijani President Ilham
Aliyev who is continually inciting hostility among Azerbaijanis
and Armenians. Otherwise, that “explosive” region will come out of
control, which, in its turn, will heat the situation in the Greater
Middle East,” FAAE said in its complaint.

The 20th Anniversary Of "Ring" Around Nagorny Karabakh

THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF “RING” AROUND NAGORNY KARABAKH

arminfo
Saturday, April 30, 16:35

Today is the 20th anniversary of the notorious Operation Koltso (Ring),
a bright example of state terrorist against the Karabakh people.

This very day 20 years ago a large-scale military and police
operation was launched to deport the part of the Armenian population
in Nagorny Karabakh that refused to subdue to the violence and will
of Azerbaijanis. Operation Koltso was charged by President Mikhail
Gorbachev and welcomed by President of Azerbaijan Ayaz Mutalibov.

Azerbaijani Communist Party Second Secretary Polyanichko contributed
to the crime as well. The actual leader and developer of that coward
plan of fight against unarmed population of Karabakh was Hero of the
Soviet Union, cavalier of numerous orders and medals, Colonel General
Boris Gromov, now governor of the Moscow region.

Azerbaijani Ministry of Interior (OMON, or ‘black beret’ forces)
helped the “hero of Afghan war” Gromov in that operation.

Military forces of the 23rd Division of the Soviet 4th Army stationed
in Azerbaijan joined in combined operations with Azerbaijani Ministry
of Interior (OMON, or ‘black beret’ forces) to undertake systematic
deportations of Armenians. ‘Operation Ring’ started in late April
1991 with the villages of Getashen and Martunashen. The operation was
developed and realized on the Afghan scenario. These names will be
seared onto the memory of Armenians alongside Baku and Sumgait for the
brutality of the suffering inflicted on their people. The operations,
carried out against vulnerable villagers, were remarkable for their
ferocity. The pattern established in Getashen and Martunashen was
later repeated against other villages in the Shaumyan district and
elsewhere in Nagorno Karabakh.

Typically, the deportation exercise would begin with Soviet 4th Army
troops surrounding the villages with tanks and armoured personnel
carriers; military helicopters would hover low overhead. Once the
village was surrounded by Soviet troops, the Azerbaijani OMON would
move in and start harassing the villagers. They would round up men,
women and children, usually on a pretext such as a ‘passport check’.

Many acts of brutality were committed: men were assaulted and killed;
women were raped, children maltreated; civilians abducted as hostages.

Azeri-Turk citizens from nearby villages would come with pick-
up trucks and cars, looting, pillaging and stealing everything from
household goods to livestock. The Armenian villagers were then driven
off their land, being forced to live as displaced people either
elsewhere in Nagorno Karabakh or in Armenia.

It is noteworthy that a small group of villagers resisted the Azeri
bands in militia and OMON uniforms. Tatul Krpeyan (National Hero of
Armenia posthumously) and Simon Achikghyozyan led the self-defense
of Getashen. Both were killed in an unequal fight bit the Armenian
defense continued a week. Despite the heroic fight, the last Armenian
left Getashen on May 7. Since then Getashen is under occupation of
Azerbaijan. 100 males were captured and taken to Kirovabad.

“During the operation “Koltso” 26 Armenian villages and small towns
in Shahumian, Hadrut and Shushi regions as well as the south and west
of the Nagorno-Karabakh were subjected to severe pressure, rioting
and looting by the Azerbaijani troops. About ten thousand people were
deported, more than a hundred people died. More than six hundred men
were taken to hostage, were tortured and abused. No international
organization or a country has recognized those incidents as a crime
against a nation by present.

40 EXPORT-ORIENTED COMPANIES TO BE ESTABLISHED IN ARMENIA BY END OF 2011

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 2, 2011 – 12:48 AMT

Chairman of the Union of Manufacturers and Businessmen of Armenia
Arsen Ghazaryan said that around 10 companies supplied with modern
equipment already operate in Armenia, while their number will reach
30-40 by the end of 2011.

After awarding of 8 companies by a medal of Armenian Prime Minister
Tigran Sargsyan for contribution to the country’s economy, Ghazaryan
said “these companies’ contribution to growth in export volume will
be significant, we just need to wait.”

According to him, while studying companies the government paid
attention to those companies, which made large-scale investments in
2010 and created new production capacities.

Ghazaryan noted that growth in export volumes was recorded in Q1 2011,
expressing belief that the paces of growth will accelerate in the
upcoming quarters. He added that the country’s policy is aimed at
substituting import and creating new jobs.

In March 2011, foreign trade turnover in Armenia grossed USD 430.3mln,
increasing by 14,1% compared to last year’s results. 18.1% growth
was reported in it in March 2011 against February indices. Export and
import comprised USD 92.2mln and USD 338.1mln in March that is 21.8%
and 12.2% higher compared to the same period in 2010 respectively.

NO PROGRESS TO BE REGISTERED IN ARMENIAN-TURKISH RELATIONS AFTER ELECTIONS

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 2, 2011 – 14:18 AMT

Turkologist Ruben Melkonyan does not expect a considerable progress
in the Armenian-Turkish relations after the parliamentary election
in Turkey.

“Some superficial changes, statements are possible. But categorical
and violent statements of the Turkish political elite have considerably
widened the split created by them,” Melkonyan told a press conference
in Yerevan.

“In case of victory, the ruling Justice and Development Party
(AKP) will initiate process of constitutional amendments aimed at
changing the system of public administration in Turkey and adopting
a presidential system,” Melkonyan said, adding that Erdogan will be
the most probable candidate for the post of “influential” president
in the country.

ALIYEV CLAN USES TENSIONS AT FRONTLINE TO ‘GAIN POINTS’

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 2, 2011 – 13:35 AMT

The Aliyev clan uses the tensions at the frontline to ‘gain points’,
a military psychologist said.

“Azerbaijan is surely preparing for war. It’s not ruled out either that
it wants to exert pressure on Armenia,” member of the Public Council at
the Armenian Defense Ministry David Jamalyan told journalists on May 2.

He also presumed that Azerbaijani armed forces’ actions reflect Baku’s
disagreement with the reality and negotiations on Nagorno Karabakh.
