A senior Iranian lawmaker has raised doubt about the US claim that
al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has been killed by American forces
near Islamabad.

“We are not sure how accurate the announcement made by the United
States is as they have in the past claimed that Bin Laden has been
killed,” head of the Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign
Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi was quoted by ISNA as saying
on Monday, May 2.

“Today, 47 or 48 countries have military forces in Afghanistan,”
he said.

“They haven’t accomplished much even if in fact they (the US) are
telling the truth about having killed Bin Laden after ten years,”
Boroujerdi concluded, The Washington Times reported.

The Day of the Republic of Armenia was traditionally marked on the
margins of the 37th International Book fair in Buenos Ayres.

Addressing more than 1 000 participants of the gathering, Armenian
Ambassador to Argentine Vladimir Karmirshalyan noted: “Creation of the
Armenian alphabet in the 5th century was perhaps one of the remarkable
events in the 3 000-year history of the Armenian people. Thanks to
that the Bible was translated into Armenian, a number of books were
published, which comprise the most valuable part of our cultural
heritage.”

Ambassador Karmitshalyan noted also that it was symbolic that two
sister-cities – Buenos Ayres and Yerevan – were chosen as World Book
Capital of 2011 and 2012 respectively. “Yerevan will organize a large
international book exhibition next year. Books published in Armenian
and foreign languages will be displayed. Argentine will be represented
in a separate pavilion,” the Ambassador noted.

Forty-two states and 1 500 publishing houses participate in the 37th

Sweden’s Azeris More Active Than Turks In Anti-Armenian Propaganda

SWEDEN’S AZERIS MORE ACTIVE THAN TURKS IN ANTI-ARMENIAN PROPAGANDA

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 2, 2011 – 14:50 AMT

The Azerbaijani and Turkish communities in Sweden are interrelated,
at least when it comes to issues which concern Armenians, i.e. mainly
the Genocide recognition process and Artsakh, the chairman of the
Board of Union of Armenian Associations in Sweden stated.

According to Vahagn Avedian, since the Riksdag’s recognition of the
Genocide last spring, the Azeri community has been more active than
the Turks. “They have sent a lot of emails to the members of Riksdag
and their ambassador has been on an “information tour” around Sweden
lecturing about Nagorno Karabakh and other issues. They have also
written a number of emails demanding a Swedish recognition of the
‘Khojali genocide’,” he said in a conversation with a PanARMENIAN.Net
reporter.

“I’m not that informed about the Turk and Azeri communities in other
Scandinavian countries, but I assume that Sweden is (parallel to the
Armenian Diaspora) their major gathering in these countries,” Mr.
Avedian noted.

“As far as the Kurds are concerned, we had much more contacts with
them for 2-3 years ago than what we have today. Then there was a
parliamentary group for Human and Minority rights in Turkey which
our organizations, along with the Assyrians, were member of. But
the chairwoman of that group did not run for parliamentary elections
last fall and the group is quite dead. Back in those days the group
held seminars and information gatherings where we met the Kurdish
representatives and had other contacts on the side. But since about
a year ago, along with the activities of the parliamentary group,
our regular contacts with the Kurds have subsided,” Mr. Avedian said.

On March 11, 2010, the Swedish Parliament recognized the Armenian
Genocide in Ottoman Empire in 1915 by 131 votes in favor and 130
against.

Progress In Karabakh Talks Possible By Summer

PROGRESS IN KARABAKH TALKS POSSIBLE BY SUMMER
Yekaterina Poghosyan

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 2, 2011

UK’s special representative for the South Caucasus, Sir Bryan Fall
visited Yerevan lately. In a conversation with a PanARMENIAN.Net
reporter, he commented on his vision for the Nagorno Karabakh conflict
settlement and Armenian-British relations.

How do you assess the results of your visit to Armenia?

We meet twice every year to hold consultations between the foreign
ministries – last time in London, and this time in Yerevan. These
visits give me a chance to see what’s being been happening, to and
have a look at what is in prospect and try to make sure that relations
are developing in a positive direction. My impressions are that the
Armenian side and the British side share the same objectives and do
practical things together.

As a Special representative, I am also interested in conflict
resolution. Although the UK is not a member of the Minsk Group, but we
support the Co-chairmen and the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

I was also able to have informal meetings with the American and French
Co-chairs as well as with the Russian ambassador to Armenia and now I’m
much better informed than I was. The main principle is to have a peace
paper agreed by the sides. There is much to be done and there is a busy
program of meetings which will help produce positive results by June.

And another important thing. My last meeting in Armenia was with
President Sargsyan and we talked not only about his negotiations
with the Co-chairs and his Azerbaijani counterpart but also about
the prospects for Armenia, including the civil society, economic and
social developments and human rights.

Which is are the UK’s interests of the UK have in the South Caucasus
and which is thewhat role does Armenia plays in Britain’s regional
policy?

We look at the South Caucasus in terms of relations with three
independent, friendly countries. It is a region and of course we
would like to see the three countries working together, especially
with regards to finding a peaceful solution to Nagorno Karabakh. We
want these countries to live in peace and democracy, for with the
rule of law, economic prosperity, social development, human rights. In
relations with Armenia, there are three principalles issues: Nagorno
Karabakh, Nagorno Karabakh and Nagorno Karabakh, because the prospects
in the for economic development would have huge advance hugely if
a peaceful solution to the conflict could be found and Armenia will
focuses on its domestic issues.

The Eastern Partnership initiative has an important role in the EU
policy in the South Caucasus. How can it help resolve the existing
problems in the region?

It would be much better if the Nagorno Karabakh problem was solved.

But doing nothing until it’s solved is not a good idea because we don’t
know when success will come and we need to make progress starting
now. The relations with each of three countries will be individual;
there will be no “uniform” one size fits all”. We believe that the
Eastern Partnership is not there to please foreigners; it should be
really be good for Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

You are optimistic about the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. However,
tensions have escalated and the number of victims at the contact line
is growing…

Loss of life is a great worry, you are right to mention it. It should
be a signal to the international community to attach urgency to
encouraginge a settlement. The disaster that would follow from the new
fighting is so obvious. Efforts should be doubled to find a solution.

And success meanis a compromise from both sides. The spring is usually
an active period when ministers and presidents meet and progress can
be achieved.

How do you look at the fact that Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh welcomed
the proposal of the international community to withdraw snipers from
the frontline while Azerbaijan rejects the idea?

We believe that withdrawal of snipers from the contact line would
be a very good idea that will reduce the risk of hostilities. We do
not see a military solution to this problem, which – it would beis
undesirable and impossible.

How would you comment on Azerbaijan’s threats to shoot down
Karabakh-bound planes? Doesn’t this rhetoric sound alarming?

I am not an expert on civil aviation. But if, I am saying “IF”,
establishment of a flying route is seen as an attempt to change the
situation, thenso probably it is not a constructive move. However,
shooting down civil aircrafts is not a good thing to do. So, the
approach to this issue should be very cautious.

Presently, Nagorno Karabakh, the party that most of all suffered in
the conflict, is not engaged in settlement talks. Do you think it’s
possible to reach an agreement without participation of Karabakh?

If you look back to 1994 when the ceasefire agreement was signed, it
had signatures from top military officials of Nagorno Karabakh. If you
do think about changing that and bringing in Nagorno Karabakh back to
the table, so it will be an interesting diplomatic game – designing the
shape of the table. However, Azerbaijan will refuse to see Karabakh as
an independent state. We came across the problem in the past. Anyway,
I am sure that the government of Armenia will never accept something
that is fundamentally unacceptable for the people of Nagorno Karabakh.

What does the UK think about the process of normalization of
Armenian-Turkish relations?

We always hope. I think it’s important that two countries with which
we have friendly relations are able to move from this artificial
position. Elections are coming in Turkey are coming soon and I do
not think that any one expects any major change before them. If the
problem was easy it would have been solved long ago. The protocols
were a huge step forward, in our view. They haven’t been ratified,
which is a pity, but they haven’t disappeared either and probably we
will come back to them.

RUBEN MELKONYAN: TURKEY DESTROYS ARMENIAN, GREEK, ASSYRIAN CULTURAL ARTIFACTS

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 2, 2011 – 15:45 AMT

Armenia has to intensify activities in relevant international
organizations to draw attention to Turkey’s demolition of non-Turkic
cultural heritage, a Turkish Studies expert stated.

At news conference in Yerevan, Ruben Melkonyan cited as an example
Turkey’s transforming a Kars-based Armenian church into a mosque, as
well as a failure to point out Armenian origin of cultural monuments
in Western Armenia.

As the expert stressed, Turkey has similar attitude to all non-Muslim
artifacts, specifically Assyrian and Greek ones. According to
him, Turkey is using the other nations’ cultural heritage and
tourist attractions to gain its ends, setting monuments, allegedly
commemorating “victims of Turkish genocide perpetrated by Armenians”
right next to them.

Iran: ‘Bin Laden was killed years ago’

‘Bin Ladan was killed years ago’

PRESS TV
Mon May 2, 2011 3:34PM

A 2007 Benazir Bhutto interview in which she says the al-Qaeda leader
was ‘murdered’ years ago contributes to the uncertainty surrounding US
claims about Osama bin Laden’s death.

On Monday, US President Barack Obama announced that the al-Qaeda
leader was killed by US forces after he was found hiding in a compound
in Pakistan.

This is while in an interview following a failed assassination attempt
on Pakistan’s former premier in October 2007, Bhutto says bin Laden
has already been killed.

In the interview, she identifies the man who killed the notorious
al-Qaeda leader as one Omar Sheikh , excerpts of which was sent to
Press TV’s UReport.

In response to a question whether any of the assassins had links with
the government, Bhutto said, “Yes but one of them is a very key figure
in security, he is a former military officer … and had dealings with
Omar Sheikh, the man who murdered Osama Bin Laden.”

Bhutto was assassinated on December 27, 2007 in a bomb attack as she
was leaving an election rally in Rawalpindi when a gunman shot her in
the neck and set off a bomb.

The announcement of bin Laden’s death comes almost ten years after the
September 11 attacks on the United States.

Meanwhile, a US official says bin Laden’s body has been buried at sea,
alleging that his hasty burial was in accordance with Islamic law,
which requires burial within 24 hours of death.

This is while burial at sea is not an Islamic practice and Islam does
not determine a timeframe for burial.

The official added that finding a country willing to accept the
remains of the world’s most wanted man was difficult, so the US
decided to bury him at sea.
