Council and Constitutional Commission,(right in the back seat) was
arrested on Tuesday. (Photo: AA)

An İstanbul court on Tuesday arrested 44 suspects, including Professor
BuÅ~_ra Ersanlı and publisher Ragıp Zarakolu, on terrorism charges
as part of an investigation into the Kurdish Communities Union (KCK),
an umbrella group that allegedly encompasses the terrorist Kurdistan
Workers’ Party (PKK) and its affiliated organizations.

Ersanlı and Zarakolu were taken to the BeÅ~_iktaÅ~_ Courthouse
on Monday along with 48 others who were detained on Friday by the
İstanbul Police Department’s counterterrorism unit.

Ersanlı, a member of the Peace and Democracy Party’s (BDP)
Party Council and Constitutional Commission, Belge Publishing House
representative Zarakolu and 48 others were interrogated by a prosecutor
following a medical examination. The prosecutor referred 47 of them
to court late on Monday, requesting their arrest and accusing the
suspects of establishing a terrorist organization, leading a terrorist
organization and being members of a terrorist organization.

Three of the suspects were released after being interrogated. The
court only issued arrest warrants for 44 of the 47 suspects referred
to court by the prosecutor.

The KCK is accused of attempting to establish an alternative governing
system and terrorizing locals in the country’s predominantly Kurdish
areas. Most of the accused face charges of membership in and/or aiding
and abetting a terrorist group. The investigation into its activities
is being conducted by İstanbul Public Prosecutor Adnan Cimen.

Ninety-six people were arrested as part of another operation against
the KCK in İstanbul earlier this month. The KCK investigation
started in December 2009 and a large number of Kurdish politicians,
including several officials from the BDP, have been detained as part
of the case since then.

The suspects have been accused of various crimes, including
membership in a terrorist organization, aiding and abetting a
terrorist organization and attempting to destroy the country’s unity
and integrity. The suspects include mayors and municipal officials
from the BDP, which has said the investigation is the government’s
method of suppressing its politicians, denying any links between its
deputies and terrorist organizations.

Meanwhile, a large group of Turkish intellectuals, mainly academics,
have launched a petition campaign to protest the detention of Professor
Ersanlı and to call for her release. A joint statement by the group
said the detention of Ersanlı, who has for years been working for
sustainable peace and a new constitution in Turkey, led to outrage
among all circles in the country that believe in the democratic state
of law.

“The detention of Professor BuÅ~_ra Ersanlı is a heavy blow dealt to
Turkey’s efforts towards a real democracy with equality, peace, social
justice and academic and political freedoms. We demand the immediate
release of Professor BuÅ~_ra Ersanlı and all other jailed politicians,
academics and journalists who work for peace, democratic rights and
freedoms in our country. The detention and arrest of people without
any concrete and serious evidence under the primitive mentality of
‘though crimes’ is against human rights,” the statement said.

Among the intellectuals who have signed the joint statement are Ahmet
İnsel, Ali Bayramoglu, Cengiz Aktar, Cengiz Candar, Hulya Gulbahar,
Murat Belge, Mithat Sancar, Oral CalıÅ~_lar, Umit Cizre, Baskın Oran,
Fuat Keyman and YaÅ~_ar Kemal.

The arrest of Ersanlı, who was assisting with the BDP’s preparations
for a draft proposal for a planned new constitution, and other KCK
suspects further infuriated the BDP. “These [KCK] operations are
organized to intimidate and silence those who have a democratic
stance. Mrs. Ersanlı is a colleague who devoted her 40 years
to science and who is known for her pro-human and women’s rights
credentials. What can be the grounds for her arrest? One single
thing: Her siding with what is right. … We are now face to face
with a mentality that wants to silence Kurds and democrats,” BDP
Co-chairwoman Gulten KıÅ~_anak told reporters on Tuesday following
her party’s parliamentary group meeting.

When she was asked whether her party would consider withdrawing
from the Constitutional Reconciliation Commission established in
Parliament to draft a new constitution after Ersanlı’s arrest,
she said it would not be correct to make such a comment.

“We joined the commission to contribute to the constitution-making
process. If we face an approach that would prevent a democratic
constitution and that would make our presence there meaningless,
our party would evaluate this situation. … We will try to maintain
our positive stance. But if this becomes impossible, we will not be
responsible for that,” she said.

Yerevan, November 3, 2011-On October 30, the Toronto affiliate of the
Hayastan All-Armenian Fund organized a concert at the “Hay kentron”
complex with Toronto area young musicians, dancers and singers,
with the slogan : “A CULTURAL BRIDGE, from Toronto to Shushi; from
the second best city in the world to the BEST “.

The programme included opera, classical, folk and jazz. According to
the Head of the Toronto chapter, Migirdich Migirdichian there were
21 musicians between the ages of 14 – 28 having graduated the Toronto
local conservatories who performed beautifully. “As I was watching the
show, I was saying to myself – imagine a concert at the Cultural centre
opening ceremony in Shushi: one young performer from Artsakh followed
by another from Toronto, and then another one from Artsakh followed by
Toronto and so on, and at the very end they all perform together. This
was a nice opportunity for young performers to be with Himnadram and
to contribute to the vital projects in Armenia and Artsakh personally.”

There were some 400 people in the auditorium who raised .000 for the
Shushi Cultural centre renovation project.

The Toronto Chapter of Hayastan Fund has been functioning very
actively since its founding in 1992. To-date Toronto chapter has
realized 40 large and small projects primarily in Artsakh and also
some in Armenia. Amongst them are 5 brand new schools, 2 school
renovations, bringing water to 11 villages and towns, including to
Stepanakert and natural gas networks for 4 villages. The affiliate
currently has 4 projects on the go : re-building the Education and
Cultural Centre of Shushi, building the Community/Medical Centre of
Drakhtik village, renovation of Sourp Krikor Loussavoritch Hospital’s

PM SARGSYAN SAYS TRCHKAN WATERFALL WILL BE PROTECTED

Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan today called for an overall
solution regarding the fate of the Trchkan Waterfall; a topic that
has been widely covered in the Armenian press due to plans calling
for the construction of a hydro-electric power plant at the site.

Sargsyan’s decision would allow for zoning changes in the area and
setting aside one hectare of land as “a unique site for special
protection.”

“We have a Sustainable Development Council for such matters. Members
of the environmental community and others participate in it. We are
aware that the environmental community has recently raised concerns
about the Trchkan Waterfall resulting from certain government
decisions. The Ministry of Nature Protection has reviewed the matter
and has submitted a series of directives to the president that will
neutralize such risks,” stated PM Sargsyan.

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

GLENDALE-The Armenian National Committee – Western Region announced
that award-winning journalist and author Mark Arax will deliver the
keynote address at ANC Grassroots, on Sunday, November 27.

Mark Arax is the author of “In My Father’s Name,” and “West of the
West,” and the co-author of the bestseller “The King of California.” A
former senior writer at The Los Angeles Times, he now teaches
writing at Fresno State University and is working on a new book,
this one a fictional novel. His Los Angeles Times stories revealing
state-sanctioned murder and cover-up in California prisons were praised
by The Nation magazine as “one of great journalistic achievements
of the decade.” In a review of his most recent book, “West of the

and unrelenting.” His books on California have been compared to the
“great social portraits” by William Saroyan and Joan Didion, and he
is considered one of the finest journalists of his generation.

In “West of the West, Arax deftly weaves the little-known history of
the Golden State, finding tragedies hidden from most Californians. His
stories on the land are told from the vantage point of a native whose
own family narrative is found in the same soil. His grandfather Aram’s
first job in America was picking the fruits and vegetables of the San
Joaquin Valley; his father, Ara, was born on a raisin farm outside
Fresno. A top graduate of Fresno State and Columbia University, Mark
left the Los Angeles Times in 2007 after a public fight over censorship
of history on the Armenian Genocide. He has taught literary non-fiction
at Claremont McKenna College and Fresno State University and served as
a senior policy director for the California Senate Majority Leader. The
father of three children, Mark lives on his suburban farm in Fresno.

La Detention De L’Ecrivain Turc Provoque La Colere Des ONG

LA DéTENTION DE L’éCRIVAIN TURC PROVOQUE LA COLèRE DES ONG

Hurriyet Daily News
Publié le : 01-11-2011

Info Collectif VAN – – Le Collectif VAN

a dit Abakay.

Liberte Pour Ragip Zarakolu

LIBERTE POUR RAGIP ZARAKOLU
Ara

armenews.com
mercredi 2 novembre 2011

Or non seulement

Carmen Labaki, Une Realisatrice Qui Voudrait Toucher A L’impossible

CARMEN LABAKI, UNE REALISATRICE QUI VOUDRAIT TOUCHER A L’IMPOSSIBLE

Pod Cast Journal.net
31 oct 2011

toucher a l’impossible.

Armenian Opposition Rallies In Yerevan Demanding President’s Resigna

ARMENIAN OPPOSITION RALLIES IN YEREVAN DEMANDING PRESIDENT’S RESIGNATION

Interfax
Oct 31 2011
Russia

At a Friday rally in Yerevan the opposition Armenian National Congress
(ANC) demanded the immediate resignation of President Serzh Sargsian
and early presidential elections.

“Today the ruling regime foiled the talks with the ANC and actually
renounced the democratic road of the country’s development. We have
nothing else left to do than to demand the immediate ouster of Serzh
Sargsian,” ANC coordinator Levon Zurabian said at the rally.

“Neither do we have any other alternative than to give up the failed
talks with the authorities by conducting a velvet revolution in the
country,” he said.

Zurabian also said that the opposition has all the instruments to
carry out the process of ousting the president and holding early
presidential elections.

According to observer estimates, some 4,000 people are taking part
in the rally in Freedom Square in the heart of Yerevan.

Tangible Follow-Up Is Needed

TANGIBLE FOLLOW-UP IS NEEDED

by Tevan Poghosyan , Executive Director of International Center for
Human Development (ICHD)

It seems that in the Armenian context Track Two Diplomacy (T2D)
projects tend to address the Armenian-Turkish relations, and rarely the
Nagorno Karabakh issue. However, on October 15-17 a very interesting
event was organized in Washington, DC with the aim to discuss the
possibilities that T2D projects can open up for the settlement of
the Nagorno Karabakh issue.

I have participated only in part of the program, and have followed
the rest of the event on media. The first day it was open for a wider
audience. The organizers had invited speakers from Armenia and the
Armenian Diaspora, Azerbaijan and the international community.

Unfortunately, no one was invited from the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh
(NKR). Almost all the speakers from Armenia emphasized this deliberate
negligence, and it seems that the message was quite clear to the
organizers: without an NKR representative any discussion of the NK
issue would become merely a nice intellectual exercise and would
totally lack any practical implications. Obviously, we were able to
communicate it to the organizers successfully, as an NKR representative
was invited to the next event at Carnegie Endowment for International
Peace. I think we have to be thankful to the organizers for their
efforts, and responsiveness to our feedback.

Organizing such meetings of experts to brainstorm on the possibilities
of various T2D projects is always very welcome, but after all , what
really matters is the follow-up to these discussions. Whether there
will be a tangible follow-up and an actual implementation of a T2D
project in the conflict region, or whether the event will become yet
another one-time show will be clear in a few months.

Meanwhile, perhaps one of the most interesting phenomenon during the
whole event was the role of media on the formation of public opinion.

I was curious to see how media would influence public perceptions. I
should confess that it was quite amusing to read the Azerbaijani
media coverage on the event. For instance, my words were twisted to
an unrecognizable extent. A number of other presentations shared the
same fate as well. Many names were misspelled. Another interesting
finding was the fact that many Azerbaijani speakers tried to present
their perspectives in quite moderate terms, whereas what you read
in Azerbaijani media reminds you of more belligerent rhetoric. Both
during and after the event, almost every day I would get an email from
one or the other international expert expressing their disbelief on
how the Azerbaijani media had distorted their messages. There were
even cases of absolute falsification.

I hope that the School of Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George
Mason University together with the Imagine project do actually plan
for real long term work in T2D, and that the lessons learned from the
first event will be taken into account. I also want to believe that all
issues discussed and all the good ideas expressed will be implemented
with a common effort from Nagorno Karabakh, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

Tevan Poghosyan is the Executive Director of International Center
for Human Development (ICHD). These views are his own.
