PACE to observe parliamentary elections in Armenia

Strasbourg, 10.05.2007 – A 35-member team of observers from the
Assembly, headed by Leo Platvoet (Netherlands, UEL), will observe the 12
May parliamentary elections in the country alongside observers from OSCE
Parliamentary Assembly and European Parliament.

Members of the delegation will meet with representatives of political
parties, as well as with NGOs and the media, before deploying around the
country to observe the conduct of the vote.

A pre-electoral delegation
< topPressView.asp?ID=3D1891> that
visited the country in April considered that this election will be a
crucial touchstone for the degree of maturity of democracy in Armenia.

The observers will announce their preliminary conclusions at a press
conference on Sunday 13 May (Marriott Hotel, 1, Amiryan Street, Yerevan,

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
