RFE/RL – Armenian, Azeri FMs Meet In New York

According to the Armenian Foreign Ministry, they reviewed “progress” made towards the implementation of Armenian-Azerbaijani agreements brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump during an August 2025 summit in Washington. One of them calls for the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) that would connect Azerbaijan to its Nakhichevan exclave and Turkey via Armenia’s Syunik province.

In a statement, the ministry said Bayramov and Mirzoyan paid “special attention” to the “unblocking of economic and transport infrastructures between Armenia and Azerbaijan.” They also explored the “possibility of advancing a positive agenda across various multilateral platforms,” it added without giving any details.

The two ministers were among senior regional officials and executives from more than 40 companies who gathered in New York on Thursday to discuss the next steps for the TRIPP’s implementation. Speaking during the event held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff the stressed the geopolitical and economic significance of the project.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian devoted a good part of his 17-minute speech at the UN assembly on Thursday to the TRIPP. He said its implementation will be have a “historic significance” for Armenia.

By contrast, Pashinian’s domestic political opponents say the transit corridor, which is due to run along Armenia’s border with Iran, could undermine Armenian control over Syunik and antagonize Tehran. Iranian leaders have repeatedly voiced serious concern over it. Iran’s ambassador in Yerevan, Khalil Shirgholami, said earlier this week that Tehran will not object to the corridor if it upholds Armenia’s territorial integrity and does not lead to U.S. security presence along the Armenian-Iranian border

Pashinian met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York earlier on Thursday. Official Armenian and Iranian readouts of the talks did not explicitly mention the TRIPP.
