“Repairing the facades requires careful work, every centimeter is needed

This is the second year that the Armenian Genocide memorial complex is being renovated. The first stage was to repair 3 facades of the memorial complex. The renovation of 3 more facades will start soon.

Although these renovations caused quite a stir, however One of the co-authors of the Armenian Genocide memorial complex and museum-institute project, the honored architect of RA Sashur Kalashyan assures that the works are being done properly, thoroughly, no damage is done to the memorial complex.

“Soon, the repair works of 3 facades will start and will continue until the end of the year. This is what I say, taking into account the weather conditions, if there is rain, snow, it will interfere with the works, and if the weather conditions are good, we will finish in November.

According to his definition, the repair of facades is generally very hard work and cannot be done quickly.

“Detailed and delicate work is required, it is not a matter of a month, every centimeter must be measured ten times. We have not only good specialists, but also quite a lot of experience, because last year the work was quite difficult in the initial part. Now we have memorized everything, we know what difficulties there are in each section. Be assured, nothing is being done of poor quality, we are doing everything properly,” added Sashur Kalashyan.

According to the architect, internal and external renovation works are being carried out in the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute. Last year, the roof was repaired in the western part. This year, the central roof will probably be repaired or the front part will be repaired.

“We have a rainwater leak in the front part, that issue must be solved,” emphasized Sashur Kalashyan.

It should be noted that days after the start of construction works in the memorial complex in 2025, many architects and public figures announced that such works will damage the memorial complex, therefore, the construction works should be stopped, a discussion should take place, and then continue, taking into account the opinion of experts. However, these works did not stop.

It should be noted that the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute was opened in 1995, during the 80th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The architects of the museum-institute are Sashur Kalashyan, Artur Tarkhanyan, the sculptor is Ferdinand Arakelyan.

The visit of official delegations arriving in Armenia to the Armenian Genocide Museum is planned by the state protocol.

The construction of the Armenian Genocide Memorial was completed in 1967, the opening took place on November 29 of the same year, during the Soviet rule, when the national ideology, including the mention of the Armenian Genocide, was rejected.

The memorial is dedicated to the memory of 1.5 million innocent victims killed by the Ottoman authorities in Western Armenia in 1915.
