YEREVAN, February 20. /ARKA/. A modern cancer treatment center will be
opened in Armenia, prime minister Tigran Sargsyan said Saturday during
a meeting with the activists of the Republican Party in Ashtarak,
the administrative center of Aragatsotn province.

“Cancer treatment is now quite expensive, and to make it more
accessible the government intends to build a modern cancer center in
Armenia”, he said.

The prime minister said the project will be implemented with the
support of the government of Belgium.

In 2010 November an agreement was signed with the Belgian company
IBA Molecular to acquire a proton accelerator Cyclone 18/18, worth
$5 million.

The construction is expected to kick off in early 2012. The total cost
of the program is $30 million. The cyclotron radionuclide accelerator
will be used for producing isotopes as part of the project worked out
by Yerevan Institute of Physics, for early diagnosis and treatment
of cancer. According to the health ministry, 30,000 people suffer
from cancer and their number grows by 3 percent every year.

“Oncological and cardiovascular diseases cause 90% of deaths,” said
the premier.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
