Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov discussed the ways
to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with the OSCE Minsk Group
co-chairmen Bernard Fassier , Igor Popov and Robert Bradtke in New
York, Trend special correspondent reported..

The meeting was held as part of Mammadyarov’s participation in the
66th session of the UN General Assembly.

Azerbaijani foreign minister and mediators exchanged views to determine
the next steps in the conflict settlement process.

The sides agreed that the current status quo can not continue.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. –
are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
