No surprise on the House’s support of Ros-Lehtinen/Berman resolution

No surprise on the House’s support of Ros-Lehtinen/Berman resolution

For OpEdNews: by Susan Galleymore – Writer

rise-on-the-House-s-by-Susan-Galleymore-091105-464 .html

Oy vey! So, what’s new? Ros-Lehtinen/Berman resolution 867 passed: 344-36.

That it did so with such a wide margin is a bit surprising…certainly
craven…and shameful. After all, this nonbinding resolution merely
urged Obama and Clinton to oppose unequivocally any endorsement of the
Goldstone report. If ever there’s a time to placate the progressive
population – and lose very little in doing so – a nonbinding resolution
is it!

Given Congress’s, the Pentagon’s, and mainstream America’s ongoing and
uncritical support for Israel and its policies, what is new is
Anti-Defamation League’s Abe Foxman was threatened enough by the
possibility of the House not backing H.R. 867 that he called on Judge
Goldstone to repudiate his report.

Said Abe to the Judge: `I have had great respect for you over the
years. Your work at the head of the South Africa Reconciliation
Commission and in helping to find a just solution to the Bosnian
conflict deserves the highest commendation….I know you to be a proud
Jew who serves on the Board of Trustees of Hebrew University and who
has a daughter living in Israel…[and] the Human Rights Council has
repeatedly demonstrated its bias against Israel…’

When has the House, or the Senate, ever let Foxman and his friends
down? This is the same Foxman who denies the Armenian genocide, who
believes that issue should be resolved between Turks and Armenians, and
who works behind the scenes to defeat a fair hearing about that
genocide in Congress.

Ironically, at a San Francisco Jewish Community Center for a recent
book event, Foxman said, `No one can dictate to you to use the word
that you want us to use. We will use the words that we feel comfortable
with.’

Accordingly, Foxman feels comfortable making thoughtful Jews feel
uncomfortable with words such as anti-Semite, self-hating Jew,
Israel-threatening Jew, Israel-bashing Jew, and so on.

Author and medical doctor Alice Rothchild grew up as a good American
Jewish girl and came of age to the dominant narrative of Israel as
heroic, courageous, standing bravely against all odds…. Since then,
believing what her eyes show her, she’s changed her views about the
situation. This effort to grow, learn, and change one’s mind based on
new information is essential to adulthood. But it landed Rothchild on
the Jewish S.H.I.T List, an alphabetized roll-call of more than seven
thousand so-called Self-Hating and/or Israel-Threatening Jews.

In a recent radio interview* I asked her about the moral underpinnings
of her work.

She said, `One big moral dilemma for me is how the American Jewish
community blindly supports everything the Israeli government does. My
question is, what is the role of US Jews and the United States in this
conflict? While it is difficult to paint American Jewry with one broad
brush stroke, for the most part mainstream American Jewry walks in line
with Israeli policy no matter what it does. It is very intolerant of
any critical dissent. That is bad for us…and it is bad for Israel.’

She continues, `I believe that if we American Jews see our brothers and
sisters in Israel doing things that we find morally indefensible, we
have to say something. If we don’t, it is bad for them…and it is bad
for us. Let’s face it, it doesn’t get any better than having a Zionist,
Jewish South African human rights lawyer like Goldstone reporting these
facts. For the Jewish community to come down so heavily on his report
makes me want to cry. For, if we don’t face up to what is in this
report, we as Jews and as Israelis are going to lose any moral
credibility in the world.’

Rothchild makes a compelling analogy. `Just as we in the United States
are made stronger by facing up to our history of slavery, the civil
rights struggle – all the things that we are ashamed of in our history
– Jews and Israelis need to do too.’

Rothchild concludes, `The US government sends Israel billions of
dollars of aid every year…and for what? There is a huge intermix of
the two military establishments. They try out our weapons, they do all
our dirty work… Once you start researching this stuff it is very
disturbing. It is a dangerous relationship and it raises difficult
moral questions for all of us.’

Apparently, it raises no moral question for 344 members of the US
House. Or Abe Foxman.

I imagine the day when that S.H.I.T. list becomes a roll call that
honors the people whose courage and steadfast morality helped turn the
tide in Israel/Palestine.

Meanwhile, Let’s see what Obama and Clinton do. I’m afraid there will
be no surprise there either.

Oy vey!

AGBU Manoogian School Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary and Unveils Its
New High School Building

By Dickran Toumajan

On October 10, 2009, the AGBU Alex and Marie Manoogian School in
Southfield, Michigan reached yet another milestone, celebrating its
fortieth anniversary with a dinner/dance to the delight of nearly 500
graduates, community leaders and supporters of the school, former and
current school board members, principals, faculty, staff, and students.
The school has remained true to its mission — to offer a quality
education in a safe, secure, and family-oriented environment and to
preserve and promote the Armenian heritage through the teaching of
language, literature, history, culture, music, and dance. In the
mid-1990s, under the guidance of former longtime principal, Dr. Nadya
Sarafian, the school experienced a smooth transition from a private to a
charter institution.

Dr. Hosep Torossian, the current principal of the Manoogian High School,
and several key members of the past and present school board had a
vision of seeing the school expanded into a modern two-story facility,
equipped with state-of-the-art science laboratories, spacious
classrooms, and an auditorium. Their goal was realized thanks to the
generosity and largesse of Mr. Richard Manoogian and Mrs. Louise
Manoogian Simone, who had the foresight to maintain the tradition and
continue the legacy established by their unparalleled parents, Alex and
Marie Manoogian. The school has grown from ten students and two teachers
(both Mrs. Keghanoush Keledjian and Mrs. Yvonne Korkoian were in
attendance) in 1969 to a student body of over 400 and a faculty and
staff of 55. The school has been the beneficiary of two Golden Apple
Awards for academic excellence, an honor bestowed by the State of
Michigan. A high percentage of Manoogian graduates continue their
education in institutions of higher learning and several have
distinguished themselves and their alma mater as doctors, lawyers,
teachers, and business- men and women.

The festivities began with welcoming remarks by the Master of
Ceremonies, Mr. Richard Dickran Kurjian, a 1979 graduate of the school
and now Treasurer of the School Board of Directors. He and his wife Mona
(also a graduate and classmate) have given two fine sons to the school.
His parents were among those who emigrated from Istanbul along with many
other Armenians in the 1960s, believed in the importance of an Armenian
school in the Metropolitan Detroit area, and became members of the
Cultural Society of Armenians from Istanbul (constant supporters of the
Manoogian School)

Dr. Richard Marburger, the dynamic and energetic president of the
Manoogian School Board and president emeritus of Lawrence Technological
University in Southfield, brought greetings and salutations from his
hard-working colleagues on the board. He is married to an Armenian,
considers himself an adopted Armenian, and has dedicated much of his
time to the Detroit Armenian community. He mentioned how proud he was
about the opportunity for select upperclassmen on the Administrator’s
List to take an engineering course at Lawrence Tech.

The next speaker was Dr. Torossian who lauded the Manoogian family for
their commitment to education, academic excellence, and the perpetuation
of the Armenian heritage. He pointed out the respect that the school
commands in the community and the high esteem it enjoys as one of the
most successful charter schools in Michigan. He went on to announce with
pride that the class of 2010 has already garnered nearly $400,000 in
scholarships to study in colleges and universities in Michigan and
beyond.

The Honorable Brenda L. Lawrence, Mayor of the City of Southfield, spoke
eloquently about her fondness for the Armenian community, which has a
substantial residential population and has been active in the
development and growth of the economy in the area. She commented on the
richness of Armenian culture, which she has witnessed on many occasions
at St. John Armenian Church and at the Manoogian School.

Mr. Artoun Hamalian, Director of Education for the A.G.B.U,
headquartered in New York City, visited the school earlier in the week
and met with members of the Armenian faculty. Mr. Hamalian read a letter
of praise and gratitude from Mr. Berge Setrakian, President of the
A.G.B.U. Central Board of Directors, and added his own favorable
impressions of the school.

Mr. James Goenner, Executive Director of the Center for Charter Schools
at Central Michigan University, talked about the success of the
Manoogian School and how it has served as a model for other schools in
the state. He presented a crystal plaque as a commemorative gift to the
school.

Miss Dyana Kezelian, principal of the Manoogian Pre-K, Elementary, and
Middle School, was the next speaker. As a longtime 2nd grade teacher,
later head teacher, and now principal, Dyana has been the living
embodiment of the school for the past thirty-five years. She has seen
two generations of students grow, mature, and graduate. She remarked how
heartwarming it was to see children of graduates now attending the
school. She particularly praised the visionary leadership of the
school’s founders, Alex and Marie Manoogian, and the trust and
confidence shown by their children, Richard and Louise, who four years
ago sponsored an almost complete renovation and face-lifting of the
existing school with the addition of a pre-K wing and a new library and
who have now endowed the school with a brand-new high school building.

Mr. Edmond Azadian, Vice-Chairman of the School Board, was given a
plaque, honoring him for his forty years of uninterrupted and dedicated
service to the school.

In his typically humble way, Mr. Richard Manoogian, accompanied by his
gracious wife Jane, thanked all those, past and present, associated with
the well-being of the school and reminisced how the students would
brighten his father and mother’s day during their frequent visits. He
quipped how proud they were when the school was mentioned in the media,
even for snow-day announcements.

Rev. Fr. Diran Papazian, former pastor of St. John Armenian Church and a
fixture at the school for all special events, offered a prayer in
closing. This was followed by the official cutting of the ribbon and
formal unveiling of the Manoogian High School. Guests were given tours
of the school by smiling high school students in uniform attire.

Guests enjoyed a lavish mezze table prepared by a small but
extraordinary group of teachers, parents, and grandparents. The dinner
was catered by well-known chef, Mr. Gary Reizian, and his stellar crew.

Entertainment was provided by Mr. Arthur Apkarian and his band from
Montreal. They mesmerized the audience late into the night with an
inexhaustible repertoire of Armenian popular and patriotic songs.

Kudos to the Dinner/Dance Committee comprised of Linda Darian Karibian,
Ani Kasparian, Sonia Kalfayan, Dyana Kezelian, Mona Kurjian, Silva
Sagherian, Sylvia Samarjian, Seran Tcholakian, and Shoghig Torossian.

We wish the A.G.B.U. Manoogian School many more achievements and
accomplishments in their noble mission to educate and instill high moral
and ethical values in the generations to come. Bring on the 45th and
50th anniversaries!

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Large scale BBC trainings are now taking place in
Khuzestan, south-west of Iran. The main stage of maneuvers envisaging
fighter bombing and shooting from "air-land" class rockets will kick
off today, General Naser Yakubi, commander of 4th military air base
of Dizful, told FARS news agency.

According to him, maneuvers are aimed at checking military equipment
as well as servicemen’s fighting capacities. They are organized by
the assistance of military air bases of Tehran and Shiraz with the
involvement of BBC IRI fighters of Tebriz, Busher, Hamadan and Dizful.

These are the second large-scale military trainings organized in the
country over the past two months. Unprecedented maneuvers of Guard
Corps rocket forces were organized late in September when various
types of Iranian rockets were launched for educational purposes.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ "I have a lot of obligations in Parliament, but if
none of parliamentarians takes charge of Israel-Armenia parliamentary
group, I’d be pleased to do that myself as I find it important." Head
of Likud Israeli ruling coalition party Zeev Elkin said.

There is a thaw between Armenia and Turkey on the one hand, but
on the other hand, Turkey undertakes a lot of anti-Israeli steps,
untying Israel’s hands for conducting a more balanced policy towards
Armenia, Israeli parliamentarian said. "More important is progress
in the sphere of air communication. If there were a Yerevan-Tel-Aviv
direct flight that would also be a good chance for both tourism and
Armenian community of Israel," IZRUS quotes Elkin as saying.

TURKEY’S POSITION ON KARABAKH CREATES EXTRA IMPEDIMENTS

PanARMENIAN.Net
08.11.2009 16:41 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Turkey should not link current rapprochement process
with Karabakh conflict settlement. Such position will create extra
impediments for Nagorno Karabakh, Armenian FM Edward Nalbandyan said
in an interview with Japanese Yomiuri newspaper.

"There is already an NK conflict settlement format with the involvement
of Russia, U.S. and France. That’s OSCE Minsk Group which contributes
to achieving progress." Should Turkey link bilateral relations with
Karabakh conflict, that’ll cause harm to both processes, Minister said.

At that he noted that Ankara and Yerevan have agreed to establish
ties without preconditions. "Anyway, we intend to proceed with our
effort towards achieving international recognition of 1915 Armenian
Genocide in Ottoman Empire," Nalbandyan stressed.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Turkish foreign minister has sought to reach out
to the Armenian diaspora around the world, saying Turkey wanted to
have good relations with all Armenians. "We want to establish good
relations with our neighbors and with all Armenians, in Beirut or
in Paris. It is for everyone’s good to develop a fair memory. But
we cannot build the peace and the future if everyone tells of their
own pain and history. Let go of your one-sided memory shackles,"
Ahmet Davutoglu told a press briefing in Paris after a meeting with
his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner.

"I know that my grandfathers, too, have suffered. I know the pains
of those who were forced to leave their their homes in the Caucasus
or the Balkans," Davutoglu said.

Davutoglu said Turkey had proposed "a new vision and a horizon" in
offering to set up a joint study with Armenians and historians from
other countries to examine all the facts around the incidents of 1915.

"We can only build a better future with a fair memory," Davutoglu said,
Anatolian News Agency reported.
