The global financial crisis has had almost no impact on Yeghvard
Yeast Plant. NT correspondent was informed by the plant’s director
Arsen Khachatrian that the plant produced 527 tons of yeast in 2007
and 620 tons in 2008. More than 345 tons of yeast was produced in
January-August 2009, and production volumes are expected to reach
600 tons in late 2009.

A. Khachatrian said that under conditions of a crisis, consumption
of many essential foodstuffs declines, while consuption of bread
grows. This is the reason why consumption volumes of domestically
made yeasts have considerable grown in the past 18 months.

According to him, until 2000 the plant produced 100 tons of pressed
yeast annually and occupied only 10% of domestic market, but since
2001 production volumes have doubled and even tripled year by year
and thanks to the construction of new sections and the installation
of dry yeast conveyers, the plant increased its share in the domestic
market up to 60%.

The plant also produces bread improvers which improve the quality of
bread, regardless of the type of flour used.

A. Khachatrian said it is envisaged creating a bread production
center in Armenia with the aim of developing new baking technologies
and raw materials. A business plan is currently being prepared to be
submitted to the RA government-adjunct operative staff for discussion
of private sector assistance programs. The cost of the investment
program is 500 thousand dollars.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
