Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has discussed democratic reforms
in the country with co-rapporteur of the PACE monitoring commission
John Prescott and Georges Colombier, the Armenian presidential press
service told Interfax.

The implementation of provisions of the 1,609 PACE resolution proceeds
from the provisions of my electoral program and is consonant with the
priorities of Armenia’s political coalition. Democratic reforms are
not limited by steps towards the implementation of the PACE resolution
and will continue, Sargsyan said.

Prescott welcomed the creation of a special working group and events
on the implementation of the PACE resolution, the press service said.

The PACE understands well that the set term for the implementation
of the resolution is not enough to secure progress in all areas,
he said. However, the PACE is glad that Armenia has the political
will to achieve progress in this area.

The PACE co-rapporteurs arrived on a two-day visit in Yerevan on Monday
in order to assess the implementation of the 1,609 PACE resolutions
on the improvement of democratic institutions in Armenia.

The PACE passed the resolution at its April session, given the domestic
political situation in Armenia after the presidential election.

If PACE co-rapporteurs come to the conclusion that there is no progress
as to the implementation of the resolution, democratic institutions
in Armenia will be discussed at the June 25 extraordinary meeting of
the PACE summer session.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
