Hovannisian, Heritage MPs Meet With Bryza, Prescott, Talvitie, Semneby

Yerevan–This evening Heritage Party leader and Armenia’s first Minister of
Foreign Affairs Raffi K. Hovannisian received US Deputy Assistant Secretary
of State, OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair Matthew Bryza and Charge d’Affaires
Joseph Pennington. They discussed Armenia’s domestic developments and
regional challenges. Earlier in the day, Bryza met at the US Embassy with
Heritage parliamentarians Anahit Bakhshian and Stepan Safarian. The MPs
presented their views on the avenues for easing the tension which has
mounted in Armenia following the presidential elections held on February 19,
2008.

The same day, Raffi Hovannisian held an official meeting at the National
Assembly with Chairman John Prescott of the Parliamentary Assembly of the
Council of Europe’s (PACE) Ad Hoc Committee which observed the recent
elections. Prescott is back in Yerevan on a post-election fact-finding
mission together with Bas Klein, the deputy head of PACE’s
Interparliamentary Cooperation and Election Observation Department, and
Bojana Urumova, the Secretary General’s representative in Armenia.
Hovannisian, who was joined by MPs Anahit Bakhshian and Vardan Khatchatrian,
and Prescott exchanged analyses of the tragic events that unfolded during
and after the presidential elections as well as of their cause-effect
relationship.

Earlier in the week, Raffi Hovannisian conducted separate in-depth meetings
with the Special Envoy of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office Ambassador Heikki
Talvitie and with EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus
Ambassador Peter Semneby.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
