YEREVAN, JANUARY 24, NOYAN TAPAN. China and India are among Asian
countries with a free trade regime established between them. "Our
purpose is to join the agreement on free trade between these
countries through negotiations," the RA minister of trade and economic
development Nerses Yeritsian said at the January 23 press conference.

In his words, some steps have already been taken for fulfilment of this
goal. "Just as the matter concerns an agreement on free trade with
the European Union, we can achieve the same with this Asian group,"
the minister explained.

It is noteworthy that a feasibility study is now being conducted by
an independent international organization with the aim of examining
the opportunity of signing an agreement on free trade between Armenia
and the EU. A group of independent experts came to Armenia for this
purpose.

The process of the EU’s recongnizing Armenia as a market economy is
currently in the final phase. All the EU requirements to countries
with the status of market economy have been met and the necessary
documents have been submitted to the EU. In 2007, work was done for
Armenia’s being granted GSP+ trade regime by the EU. It will allow
to import all Armenian goods, except weapons, to EU member states at
a zero or reduced customs duty. This work will continue in 2008.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
