Armenian and Jewish Questions

Andrew Tharsey, head of a regional department of the American Jewish
"Unity Against Defamation" organization was dismissed from his
office just after he stated that the organization should recognize
the Armenian Genocide.

Armenian Assembly of America informs that the decision about dismissal
was made on Friday, August 17, 2007.

The dismissal roused a great wave of common irritation among the
American Jews against Abraham Foxman, the director of the organization.

Tharsey, who had held that office for over 20 years, told "Boston
Globe" that the position of the Jewish organization morally
unpardonable.

A former member of "Unity Against Defamation" organization’s regional
council Steve Grossman said to "Boston Globe" correspondent stated
that the dismissal was a revengeful, intolerant and destructive action.

He expressed opinion that the dismissal will destabilize the situation
inside the organization and also cause difficulties in relations
between Jews and other nationalk cimmunities.

The same publication of "Boston Globe"n says that the Executive
committee of the organization is on Tharsey’s side and after those
events made a decision to support the adoption of the Armenian
Resolution, submitted to the US Congress.

Foxman and Glenn Loui, President of "Unity Against Defamation", replied
the publication in "Boston Globe" with a 3-page letter.they wrote that
their organization has recognized the Armenian Genoicde and urges
Turkey to accept its own history and reconcile with Armenia. They
also wrote that at the same time their organization has to observe
the interests of the Jewish community of Turkey, work to the benefit
of Israel and struggle against extremism.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
