More Marriages Registered, Less Divorces Granted

MORE MARRIAGES REGISTERED, LESS DIVORCES GRANTED

YEREVAN, AUGUST 2, ARMENPRESS; Judging from the statistics, the number
of registered marriages in January-June 2007 rose 6, 2 percent from
a year ago to 8,669.

According to Garik Hayrapetian, UN Population Fund Armenia Office
representative, the number of marriages in post-Soviet Armenia reduced
almost 3 times. He said despite an insignificant rise the figures
are not satisfactory yet.

In 1990 when Armenia’s population was 3.5 million, about 28,000
marriages were registered annually, while in 2006 with 3.2 million
population only 16,500 marriages were registered.

The marriage age of Armenian males rose 2.5 year to 25.5 years and
that of women rose 1.6 years to 22.3 years. According to the same
statistics, the number of granted divorces in January-June 2007
reduced 9.5 percent from a year ago to 1,376.
