Yerevan, 4 May: Armenian President Robert Kocharyan yesterday [3 May]
met the heads of the diplomatic missions of the OSCE member states
represented in Armenia.

The presidential press service reported that the forthcoming
parliamentary election [on 12 May] and the electoral process were
the key issues discussed in the meeting. Kocharyan said that Armenia
has reached a crucial point – the election process has entered the
final stage. He reiterated the Armenian government’s determination to
conduct the election in line with international standards. He said
that the pre-election period goes quite calmly and in a civilized
manner, and pointed to the importance of the role of authorities
and political forces. Kocharyan asked the diplomats to express their
views and observations regarding the electoral process.

The diplomats said that the elections are a crucial step in Armenia’s
way to democratic development. They believe that a serious progress is
already seen in Armenia in terms of holding free and fair elections,
which is reflected in the observation mission’s reports.

They said that all the participants of the process have opportunities
to meet voters, present their viewpoints and use TV air time.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
