DEBATE IN UKRAINE OVER SENDING PEACEKEEPERS TO KARABAKH

24.05.2005 06:54

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Ukrainian Foreign Minister Boris Tarasyuk has slightly
exaggerated Ukraine’s readiness to send a peacekeeping contingent to Nagorno
Karabakh, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for National Security and
Defense Affairs Georgy Kryuchkov stated at a press conference Tuesday, proUA
reported. `The Minister probably assumed much to himself by saying that
Ukraine is ready. One has to know which stand the Parliament will take,’ he
said. He noted that at the moment one could not speak either of the position
of the Supreme Rada, or that of the Parliamentary Committee. In Kryuchkov’s
words, the positions of Armenia and Azerbaijan should also taken into
account in the issue of sending the Ukrainian peacekeeping contingent to
Karabakh. Kryuchkov also added that he cannot forecast the posture of the
Parliament. At the same time Secretary of the National Security and Defense
Council Petro Poroshenko stated May 24 that he does not rule out Ukraine
sending its peacekeepers to Karabakh. `This decision will be considered by
the CNSD, the respective presentation was submitted to the Government.’
