Lawyers protest outside Prosecutor General’s Office in Yerevan

Armenia –

A group of lawyers on Monday staged a protest against police violence outside the Prosecutor General's Office in Yerevan. They “gifted” a TV set with a red ribbon to Armenia’s chief prosecutor.

The protest was sparked by an incident in which lawyer Karen Alaverdyan was beaten up by police officers while representing his client at a police station in Yerevan earlier in June.

"When the chief prosecutor was asked in the parliament about the progress in the investigation into the violence, she said she was not aware of the incident," Arsen Babayan said.

"Today, we have brought the prosecutor general a TV as a gift, so that she would have the opportunity to watch not only the Public TV, but also other channels to learn about violence against lawyers in police custody," he added.

Armenia, Azerbaijan still disagree on key issues, deputy FM says

Panorama
Armenia –

Armenia and Azerbaijan have still not agreed on key parameters of a bilateral peace deal, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan said on Monday.

“It’s about the principal issues that have already been announced, including the maps to be used for the border delimitation, security guarantees for the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and international mechanisms for a dialogue between Baku and Stepanakert,” he told reporters in the parliament.

“Unfortunately, no agreement has been reached on these issues and the positions of the sides remain far apart, but the work is ongoing,” Kostanyan added.

He insisted on Armenia’s sovereignty over any road passing through Syunik Province, again ruling out an exterritorial corridor connecting Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan.

Separately, the official said new dates for the postponed meeting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers in Washington were under discussion and would be announced in the near future.

The Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has
been collaborating with various partners in Armenia and in the Diaspora to
support the development of important language-related IT initiatives. These
include universal Armenian spellcheckers, websites and databases analysing
Armenian word formations, respective apps, universal platforms analysing
Armenian grammar, and considerable amounts of digitized publications and
searchable texts in Armenian. In line with our mission to enhance the use of the
Armenian language, these freely and openly accessible digital resources and
tools have been put at the disposal of everyday readers, researchers, and
language learners and users around the world.

To chart the next steps that need to be taken in the language-related IT
programming – given the constant and fast-paced developments in the sector – and
as part of its new five-year plan, the Armenian Communities Department teamed up
with the TUMO Center for Creative Technologies, to host a working meeting on 30
and 31 May 2023, wherein a team of more than 20 domain experts from around the
world met at TUMO Yerevan.

The objective of the meeting was to identify the necessary tools to be created
in order to enhance the use of the language further and to ensure its vitality
keeping it compatible with advancements in IT, to explore the most promising
ideas and initiatives in the field, and to discuss the key questions of the day:
What are the essential tools needed to bring Armenian to the forefront of
technology? What opportunities and threats are likely to emerge from the latest
developments in artificial intelligence? How can we ensure that Armenian
proficiency is built into Large Language Models and other generative AI tools?

Some of the actionable points that emerged from the 2023 working meeting
include: creating an exponentially larger corpus of digital Armenian data;
centralizing data in order to make it accessible to the open-source community;
creating grammar tools, online translators, speech-to-text and text-to-speech
tools; and forming an advisory body to provide expert advice on initiatives to
undertake.

This initiative builds on the results of the 2015 workshop entitled “Advancing
Armenian Language through Information Technology and New Communication Tools”
that took place as a joint initiative of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and
TUMO. The Foundation determined many of its subsequent IT and Armenian language
related programming based on the 2015 gathering. Similarly, the May 2023 meeting
will inform programming in this area during the newly launched 2023-2027
five-year plan.

HEADLINE:

Şahan Arzruni Remembers the Iconic Armenian Composer Aram Khachaturian, His Music and Life, in a Tribute Evening at the Eastern Diocese

By Stephan S. Nigohosian

The dynamic music of venerated Soviet-Armenian composer and conductor Aram Khachaturian was explored at a special screening of Khachaturian: An Archival Film, on June 6 at the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, in New York City.

Best known for such groundbreaking works as Spartacus, Masquerade and Gayane (the latter of which featured his most popular movement, “Sabre Dance”), Khachaturian’s infusion of Armenian-inspired musical tones and arrangements reflected the heritage he so dearly cherished.

The event, sponsored by the Diocese’s Krikor and Clara Zohrab Information Center, marked the iconic composer’s 120th birthday.  It featured introductory remarks and a Q&A session by pianist and composer Şahan Arzruni, whose lifelong efforts promoting Armenian composers and preserving their musical legacies were palpable throughout the entire evening.

Arzruni’s prestigious credentials include a Master’s Degree with a double major in piano and composition from The Juilliard School.  His extensive experience and knowledge of music theory, history, and composition enabled him to highlight and convey Khachaturian’s brilliance in terms that the audience could understand and appreciate.

Attendees were treated to Arzruni’s personal insight into Khachaturian’s work process, which he gained firsthand while collaborating with Khachaturian during one of the composer’s visits to New York City in 1972.  One such session involved Arzruni inviting Khachaturian to his apartment to hear him perform his interpretation of the composer’s two albums of children’s music—which had never been recorded.

“I thought it would be a nice opportunity to play those pieces for him in person, so my recordings would be as authentic as possible,” Arzruni recalled.  He remembered performing the pieces for Khachaturian, while the maestro gracefully danced as the music washed over him.

“To illustrate the mood that the compositions should elicit, Khachaturian stood up and began ethereally dancing around the room with incredible movement of his wrists while I performed,” Arzruni said.  “It was at that moment that I realized that my interpretation of his music had earned his approval.”

Arzruni also played a role in the making of Khachaturian: An Archival Film in 2003, to honor the centennial of the composer’s birth.  Having acquired reams of archival film footage of the composer from Alorik Davityan, director of film archives in Yerevan, he faced the task of deciding how best to tell the story.

“I knew nothing about filmmaking, but I had a structure in mind of how I envisioned the film’s arc would unfold,” he said.  “I worked closely with an editor here in New York, and we chose the footage we felt was the right length for a documentary, while illustrating Khachaturian’s work and genius.”

* Promoting the Luminaries of Armenian Music

In addition to Khachaturian, Sahan has championed the music of Komitas: the great Armenian composer, arranger, singer, choirmaster and priest.

“Whereas Khachaturian was the ambassador of contemporary Armenian music, Komitas was its founder,” Şahansaid.  His intimate knowledge of Komitas’ life and work is due, in part, to a post-graduate doctoral thesis he worked on, which involved translating Komitas’ extensive written legacy of articles published in scholarly and popular journals in the late 19th-early 20th centuries.

Another subject of Sahan’s efforts is American-Armenian composer Alan Hovhaness, regarded as one of the most prolific 20th-century composers.  “Alan and I became very good friends, and we played and recorded some of his compositions together,” he recalls.

Prior to his death in 2000, Hovhaness gave to Şahan many of his manuscripts that had never been printed or performed professionally, with the request that he try to record them.  Arzruni ultimately recorded eight of the works: a fitting tribute to his friend and colleague.

Currently, he is working on recording piano compositions that will continue to highlight the valuable contributions of Armenian composers.  One greatly anticipated project will be devoted to the works of Armenian women composers.

Given his unwavering dedication and passion for the music made by his Armenian compatriots in the world of classical and contemporary music, it is likely that Şahan Arzruni’s efforts will ensure their legacies will continue in perpetuity for future generations to enjoy.

 14:44,

YEREVAN, JUNE 19, ARMENPRESS. The Azerbaijani forces have again opened cross-border gunfire at a U.S.-affiliated steel mill construction site in the Armenian village of Yeraskh, the ministry of defense said Monday.

“On June 19, at 1:25 p.m., the units of the Azerbaijani AF opened fire from different caliber small arms targeting the metallurgical plant in Yeraskh, which is being built with foreign investment,” the Ministry of Defense of Armenia said in a statement.

The construction site was again targeted by Azeri forces last week, resulting in two Indian workers getting shot and wounded.

With no medical supplies, blockaded Nagorno Karabakh suspends all non-essential surgeries and other healthcare services

 15:40,

YEREVAN, JUNE 19, ARMENPRESS. All non-essential surgeries and checkups have been put on hold in all hospitals of Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh), the Nagorno Karabakh Ministry of Healthcare said in a statement.

The move comes days after Azerbaijan blocked Red Cross medical evacuations that were being carried out amid the blockade of the Lachin Corridor.

“The two-way movement of patients from Nagorno Karabakh and supplies of medical items and medicine by the International Committee of the Red Cross is completely blocked by Azerbaijan for already five days. Due to the halt of medicine imports, the medicine supplies in the stationary sector have dropped to 40%, and 20% in the outpatient sector. Taking into account the situation, all non-urgent checkups and interventions (surgeries) in all medical facilities are cancelled starting today. Approximately 175 patients with various diagnoses are waiting for the opportunity to be transported to hospitals in the Republic of Armenia for treatment. Patients requiring urgent transportation have cancer and cardiovascular diseases,” the Ministry of Healthcare said, adding that 8 children are hospitalized in the intensive care and neonatal department at the Arevik hospital. Another 8 patients are under intensive care in the Republican Medical Center, three of whom are critically-ill.

The delegation will meet with Armenian government ministers and representatives of the Armenian Parliament, as well as EU Member States ambassadors.

Led by SEDE Chair Nathalie Loiseau (Renew, FR), the delegation is composed of MEPs from different political groups : Arnaud Danjean (EPP, FR), Michael Gahler (EPP, DE), Gheorghe-Vlad Nistor (EPP, RO), Lars Patrick Berg (ECR, DE), Fabio Massimo Castaldo (NI, IT).

PACE to discuss Lachin Corridor

 17:26,

YEREVAN, JUNE 19, ARMENPRESS. Debates on the Lachin Corridor have been included in the summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

The Azerbaijani delegation to PACE tried to block the item from being included in the agenda but failed.

Armenia delegate to PACE Vladimir Vardanyan said PACE included the item in the session by overwhelming majority of votes.

The Lachin Corridor has been blocked by Azerbaijan since 12 December 2022.

The United Nations’ highest court – the International Court of Justice (ICJ) – ordered Azerbaijan on February 22 to “take all steps at its disposal” to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.  Azerbaijan has been ignoring the order ever since.

Lachin Corridor is the only road linking Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia and the rest of the world.

Furthermore, Azerbaijan last week even blocked relief supplies and medical evacuations by the Red Cross.
