Germany will be looking to move above Armenia to the top of Group J when the two teams lock horns in their World Cup 2022 qualification section on Sunday night.

Hansi Flick‘s side will enter the match off the back of a 2-0 success over Liechtenstein on Thursday, while Armenia were held to a goalless draw by North Macedonia on the same night.

Flick’s first game in charge of Germany ended in a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein on Thursday evening, with Timo Werner and Leroy Sane scoring the goals for the Germans, who had 29 shots against the minnows but found it difficult to convert their domination into goals.

Die Mannschaft, who have won the World Cup on four occasions, were eliminated by England in the round of 16 at Euro 2020 and will therefore be hoping to show improvement at next year’s competition in Qatar.

Germany opened their Group J campaign with back-to-back wins over Iceland and Romania before suffering a shock 2-1 home defeat to North Macedonia at the end of March, which allowed Armenia to move to the top of the section – a further indication of the importance of Sunday’s contest.

Thursday’s victory over Liechtenstein was important for Flick’s team, but a disappointing result this weekend would allow Armenia to move further clear, while it would also open the door for North Macedonia and Romania, in third and fourth respectively, to make ground in the section.

Germany have only actually faced Armenia on three previous occasions and have been victorious in each contest, including a 6-1 win when the two teams last locked horns in a friendly back in June 2014.

Armenia, as mentioned, will enter Sunday’s contest off the back of a goalless draw with North Macedonia on Thursday; the result followed three straight wins over Liechtenstein, Iceland and Romania in the section, which allowed the nation to move to the top of Group J.

A total of 10 points from four matches has left Armenia at the top of the group, one point clear of second-placed Germany, and the Collective Team are bidding to qualify for their first ever World Cup.

Joaquin Caparros‘s side suffered a 3-1 defeat to Sweden in a friendly at the start of June but have not actually lost a competitive fixture since September 2020, when they were beaten 2-1 by North Macedonia in the UEFA Nations League.

Armenia will certainly believe that they are capable of claiming a top-two spot in this section, while a victory over Germany on Sunday would put them in a strong position at the summit, although there is a lot of football to be played before the qualification campaign is finished.

Manuel Neuer was not used against Liechtenstein on Thursday but is expected to return between the sticks here, while Germany boss Flick is likely to make a couple of changes elsewhere.

Indeed, Antonio Rudiger and Leon Goretzka could come into the starting XI, while Serge Gnabry will hope to take the spot of Jamal Musiala, who was included in the side against Liechtenstein.

Sane and Werner were both on the scoresheet last time out and appear to have done enough to keep their spots in the starting team for this key fixture.

Kai Havertz operated in the number 10 position on Thursday and that is again expected to be the case here, with Goretzka potentially coming into the midfield alongside Joshua Kimmich.

As for Armenia, head coach Caparros has no injury concerns from the side that shared the points with North Macedonia on Thursday, meaning that a similar side should take to the field.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is the squad’s captain, most experienced player and leading goalscorer, and the 32-year-old is a certain starter in this match, where he will be looking to add to his 30 international goals.

Elsewhere, there are not expected to be many surprises, with Sargis Adamyan, who plays his club football for Hoffenheim, leading the line, while Tigran Barseghyan should also be in the side despite not featuring against North Macedonia.

Germany possible starting lineup:
Neuer; Baku, Sule, Rudiger, Gosens; Kimmich, Goretzka; Gnabry, Havertz, Sane; Werner

Armenia possible starting lineup:
Yurchenko; Hambardzumyan, Calisir, Voskanyan, Hovhannisyan; Udo, Grigoryan, Bichakhchyan; Barsaeghyan, Adamyan, Mkhitaryan

Armenia are a strong outfit and will fancy their chances of causing Germany plenty of problems on Sunday night. This could be a really tricky match for the hosts, and we are expecting them to suffer, but it is difficult to predict anything other than a victory for Flick’s team.

Sports: Henrikh Mkhitaryan: Armenia’s attacking midfielder wizard, made in the Bundesliga

Sept 3 2021

Henrikh Mkhitaryan proved he could flourish in Europe’s top five leagues after Borussia Dortmund brought the Armenia international to the Bundesliga as he scored and made goals under Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

bundesliga.com details at how Mkhitaryan – now at Roma after spells at Manchester United and Arsenal – morphed from exciting prospect to bona fide game-changer in his three seasons in Germany.

Mkhitaryan was the third summer arrival of 2013 along with Sokratis and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but after his performances for Shakhtar Donetsk and the club record fee Dortmund paid for him, there was no doubt he was the one most was expected of.

“We’re really happy to be able to present a super new arrival for our attacking midfield in Henrikh Mkhitaryan,” said a smiling sporting director Michael Zorc, who gave his newly acquired star the number 10 shirt vacated by Mario Götze, a statement in itself.

“It wasn’t an easy transfer, but we absolutely wanted to get Henrikh,” explained CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. “And now we have him.”

It didn’t take long for the new arrival to make an impact. He had tallied an assist for Marco Reus and scored himself within 16 minutes of a pre-season friendly with Basel, and though injury in another warm-up encounter meant he sat out the opening Bundesliga game, he soon showed he could cut it in Europe’s big leagues.

As his team roared out of the blocks, so did ‘Micki’, netting three times in his first four league games, including a brace at Eintracht Frankfurt that brought a 2-1 win. “It’s not really me you should be congratulating but the team, it’s most important that we won,” he said with his trademark humility.

“I’m really settling in, this is a great place to improve, and we’re still getting better as a team. Jürgen Klopp is one of the best coaches in the world, and I’m proud that he’s my coach – together we can be successful.”

At the time, that certainly looked the case with Dortmund clear at the top of the table come the 2013/14 season’s first international break. Klopp’s men would eventually finish second to Bayern Munich, but Mkhitaryan could certainly look back on a successful first league campaign in Germany with nine goals and 10 assists in 31 league appearances.

The promise of that debut season faded a little in Mkhitaryan’s second campaign at the Signal Iduna Park. A foot injury early in the surprise Matchday 4 loss at Mainz – Dortmund’s second defeat in their opening four matches – set the tone in what was to prove Klopp’s last year as BVB coach.

A muscle injury just before Christmas also hampered Mkhitaryan, who struggled to recapture his form, as Dortmund finished the first half of the season second-from-bottom of the table with 10 defeats in their opening 17 matches.

Mkhitaryan also became a firm-favourite of Borussia Dortmund fans, especially when they faced local rivals Schalke. – DFL

“We were losing so much, and I felt like I was having no luck. Not only was I not scoring, but I was not assisting, which is very unlike me. I had been signed for a lot of money, and I put a lot of pressure on myself,” Mkhitaryan would later explain.

“I had many hard nights in my apartment in Dortmund, all alone, just thinking and thinking. I didn’t want to go outside, even to have dinner.”

It took him until Matchday 23 and a 3-0 derby win over Schalke in late February to net his opening goal of the game – not a bad game to score in for a Dortmund player – to get off the mark. He ended with three goals and six assists in 28 league outings as Dortmund also recovered to move into a seventh-placed finish, and sunnier times were around the corner for Mkhitaryan.

“Fate can be interesting. A new manager, Thomas Tuchel, came to Dortmund before my third season, and he changed everything for me,” Mkhitaryan said. “He came to me and said, ‘Listen, I want to get everything out of you.'”

Now a UEFA Champions League-winning coach, Tuchel at the time was billed as an up-and-coming tactician who had enjoyed success at Mainz and was moving into his first major job with the potentially thorny task of replacing the iconic, Bundesliga title-winning Klopp.

But the current Chelsea manager had an almost instant impact on his Armenian star. Playing in an attacking 4-1-4-1 line-up with Reus, Aubameyang, Shinji Kagawa and Ilkay Gündogan, Mkhitaryan struck twice in the 4-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach to open the 2015/16 season with a bang.

“After the season I had had, I didn’t think I could be a star. But he did it. He got everything out of me that season, and it was because I was happy again,” said Mkhitaryan of Tuchel.

“That season, we played with enthusiasm. We played a crazy, super-attacking style, and we enjoyed every minute on the pitch. We basically played with two defenders, three midfielders and five strikers, and we had success. Even when we lost, we had fun.”

Watch: Mkhitaryan’s 2015/16 magic

They did lose, but only four times in the Bundesliga as they finished runners-up to the peerless Bayern. Mkhitaryan played in all but three of their top-flight matches, netting 11 times and setting up 20 more goals to end as one of the campaign’s stand-out performers league-wide.

It was to be a glorious swansong as – with just 12 months left on his contract – Mkhitaryan moved on to United, signing for them at the same time as Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“Based on a completely new situation, this transfer was a difficult trade-off for us,” said Watzke. “Manchester made us a very attractive offer. Had we refused it, the player would have left us on a free transfer in 2017 and we would only have delayed the matter of replacing him for a year.”

But it was those years in Dortmund which showed Mkhitaryan to the rest of Europe and beyond.

“I am proud that the UK was the first international partner to donate to the International Committee of Red Cross humanitarian response. We gave a million pounds (660 million drams). We are currently working with the UNDP in the communities of Syunik, Vayots Dzor and Gegharkunik to provide psychological support and help create new economic opportunities for those affected by the conflict”, the Ambassador said.

He added that the UK is also committed to help in clearing up all the weapons, landmines and explosives that remain after the war, endangering lives and limiting the use of the land.

“So I am delighted that the UK’s Minister for the European Neighbourhood Wendy Morton has announced the contribution of 500,000 pounds (330 million drams) to support UNDP efforts in and around Nagorno Karabakh. We hope other international partners will support the UN with this important work and we call on all parties to work with the UN to have a full access for the UN and other international humanitarian agencies across all areas affected by the conflict.

Our contribution also recognizes the UK’s commitments to help rid the world of landmines. That is why we firmly support the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

The UK strongly encourages Armenia and Azerbaijan to sign this Convention, known as the Ottawa Treaty, which commits to halting the spread of landmines.

Together we can contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous future for all those affected by last year’s conflict”, the UK Ambassador said.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 2, ARMENPRESS. Prosecutor General of Armenia Artur Davtyan met with Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov in the city of Vladivostok, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Armenia told Armenpress.

The officials discussed the process and results of the cooperation between their offices, as well as issues on raising the efficiency of mutual communication.

Artur Davtyan thanked the Russian side for the invitation to participate in the 6th Eastern Economic Conference, expressing confidence that such events contribute to investments in economies and use of more practical mechanisms for protection of rights of investors.

Both sides highly valued the frequency of meetings between the Prosecutor Generals, which, they said, gives a new impetus to strengthening the practice of operational solving of ongoing issues, raising the mutual trust level between their offices.

The meeting also focused on issues relating to ensuring peace, stability and security in the region after the 2020 Artsakh War.

Artur Davtyan thanked the Russian side for its peacekeeping mission in Artsakh, for ensuring the security of more sensitive sections of the borders of Armenia. He drew the attention of his Russian counterpart on the destabilization actions of Azerbaijan.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 2, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian government has commented on the report published by Moody’s Investors Service (“Moody’s”) which affirmed Armenia’s Ba3 local and foreign currency long-term issuer ratings and foreign currency senior unsecured rating. The outlook remained stable.

During today’s Cabinet meeting, Minister of Finance Tigran Khachatryan says given that Moody’s last assessment was made in 2019, after which in 2020 Armenia’s economy faced major risks because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Artsakh War, this assessment records increase in the resistance of the country’s economy to such risks.

He says that the economic policy of the Armenian government from this perspective is effective.

“This is a very important signal for international investors because it reaffirms the stable outlook of Armenia’s economic growth and the favorable economic policy of the government for investments”, he said, adding that the report has a special place to matters relating to the management of the state debt.

“Although the government debt-GDP has increased in 2020, comprising 63.5%, Moody’s says that it attaches importance to the Armenian government’s policy to reduce this from 60% in next five years”, the minister stated.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 2, ARMENPRESS. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Artsakh Davit Babayan gave an interview to ARMENPRESS on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Artsakh, saying that it is an event containing a very important symbolism because the Republic of Artsakh was created, was able to defend itself and develop by the efforts of all Armenians.

‘’It is understandable that in this situation after the third war, there are a few congratulations in Artsakh, but the congratulation is mandatory, because the best offsprings  of our nation given their lives by their blood, their day and night work, by everything for the creation, development, protection and strengthening of the Republic of Artsakh. This is a very important event and the logical development of our national-liberation fight. A fight, the last stage of which started in 1988, it started and continues until now. This is a holiday, which we have to remember, celebrate, because this, at the end, is the passport Of our country’’, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Artsakh.

Davit Babayan emphasized in his speech that the preservation of Artsakh and the defense of Artsakh, the preservation of subjectivity of Artsakh today has a vital importance  because if Armenian Artsakh does not exist it is to a great extent dangerous for all of Armenia. According to Babayan, a number of power centers are also interested in the existence of the Republic of Artsakh.

‘’Artsakh must be a value and holiness in Armenia and diaspora. It will greatly contribute to that Artsakh will be able to stand up and be our gate. And to be able to carry out the correct geopolitical policy and have success in foreign field, we have to give importance to that in our hearts, souls, thoughts, we have to value Artsakh. I repeat Artsakh is an idea, it is not persons. The preservation of Artsakh must be a philosophy, because the future of Armenia depends on this’’, Davit Babayan mentioned, emphasizing that there is no other option than being an ideological  nation because in material field we can’t compete with Azerbaijan and Turkey.
