Erdogan dubs Macron a ‘political novice’ over Armenia issue

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday called French counterpart Emmanuel Macron a “political novice” over the announcement that France would hold a national day to commemorate “the Armenian genocide.”

Turkey and Armenia have long been at odds over the treatment of Armenians during World War I.

Armenians say up to 1.5 million of their people were killed during the war.

But Turkey — the Ottoman Empire’s successor state — denies that the massacres, imprisonment and forced deportation of Armenians from 1915 amounted to a genocide.

“I say to Macron — you are still a political novice, first learn the history of your country,” Erdogan said during an interview with the A-Haber television channel.

He went on to list all the countries which France had colonized and where, he said, massacres had taken place including Algeria, Indochina and Rwanda.

France was one of the first major European nations to recognize the mass killings as “genocide.” More than 20 other countries have followed suit.

Armenians commemorate the massacres on April 24 — the day in 1915 when thousands of Armenian intellectuals suspected of harboring nationalist sentiment and being hostile to Ottoman rule were rounded up.

Earlier this month Macron announced that France, which has a substantial Armenian community, would hold a “national day of commemoration of the Armenian genocide” on the same date.

Last week Turkey hit out at that decision with Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy accusing Macron of trying to win votes from the Armenian community in France.

Eurasian Expert Club assesses Armenia’s economic performance in 2018 as satisfactory

Panorama, Armenia

2018 was a difficult year for Armenia as number of political developments significantly affected the country’s economic performance, Aram Safaryan, the head of Integration and Development NGO, Coordinator of Eurasian Expert Club, said at a meeting with reporters on Saturday. “Considering these factors, the economic performance of Armenia can be assessed as satisfactory even good,” Safaryan stressed.
The expert reminded the country recorded a record 9,2% GDP growth in the first trimester of 2018. The number then gradually decreased in the second and third trimesters.

“The GDP for the past year is not published yet but to our prediction, it will stand at 5.6 – 6%,” said Safaryan, adding throughout 2018 a sustainable 4-8% growth was observed in industrial production, trade and services.

“Against the backdrop of this, Armenia’s result within EUEA are quite impressive, as we
recorded 20% increase in exports and 10% in import with Russia, while trade-economic volumes increased by 68% with Belarus and doubled with Kazakhstan.

“In the history of our independency our export volumes amounted for r 2 million 400 thousand US dollars for the first time,” the speaker said.

Safaryan reminded that Armenia has assumed the EAEU presidency in 2019 and should make efforts to present its interests both within and outside of the economic bloc.

Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Ashot Tavadyan, present at the press conference, noted in turn that for countries with relevantly small economic market exports as a share of GDP is more relevant index than the GDP itself.

“If we want a real developed economy our export per GDP should reach 50% that is to say to surpass 6 billion,” the economist said.

The Turkish side expressed no desire to establish relations with Armenia, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia Ruben Safrastyan has told Armenian News- NEWS.am.

According to him, no political figure has so far shown a desire to settle relations with Armenia.

“As for the Armenian-Turkish protocols, this is a long-non-existent document. It is difficult to predict whether something will change or not by establishing Armenian-Turkish relations, given that Ankara puts pressure on Yerevan,” he said.

Ruben Safrastyan highlighted that Turkey still adheres to the approach based on setting preconditions and demanding concessions from Yerevan.

“Armenia, of course, will not make any concessions,” the expert said.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan gave an interview to Die Zeit weekly newspaper of Germany, and reflected on the velvet revolution that took place in Armenia last year.

The PM stressed that what had occurred in the country was  unique, News.am reports.

“From the very beginning of our movement, its most important symbol was our hands raised up; it was describing our objectives,” Pashinyan said. “Even if the [then] government were to use force [against us], we were not going to respond by force.”

The PM ruled out that violence can be justified under any circumstance.

“We want to rule out violence in Armenia,” Pashinyan added, in particular.

When asked whether a leader is needed to succeed, the Armenian premier responded that his greatest contribution to this revolution was that he had declared that he was not a leader.

“From that moment on, our movement decentralized and began to grow,” Pashinyan stressed. “The real leaders of our revolution were our citizens.”

And when asked why there should be positive changes in Armenia, in the case when after the “color revolutions” in Eastern Europe, the situation was not so good in those countries, Nikol Pashinyan responded that what had occurred in Armenia was not a “color revolution.”

He stressed that no foreign force was associated with them.

“It was a pure internal process, rather than a political game,” the PM added. “Solely Armenia’s citizens, who want a better future, were involved in our revolution.”
