Armenia to host Ancient Roman mosaics exhibition

The following information was released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy:

The exhibition "Colourful visions of Ancient Rome: Mosaics from the Capitoline Museums", a rich collection of prestigious mosaic works from the Capitoline Museums of Rome, will be on display from 10 August to 29 September in Armenia's National Gallery.

The event, promoted by the Embassy of Italy in Armenia with the organisational support of Global Project Consulting, is part of a series of activities aimed at optimising and promoting Italian cultural heritage carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Roma Capitale municipal authorities.

The exhibition will be inaugurated tomorrow in Yerevan in the presence of the Ambassador of Italy to Armenia, Vincenzo Del Monaco, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia, Araik Harutyunyan, as well as the diplomatic corps, the academic world and civil society organisations. The exhibition is the highlight of the summer events of the Armenian capital, organised in a full season of Italian cultural events thanks to the close collaboration between the Italian Embassy and the Armenian government, which sponsored the event through its Ministry of Education. The travelling exhibition will make its first stop in Sofia, Bulgaria and another in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The twenty-one mosaics on display, all discovered in Rome, cover a broad chronological spectrum, ranging from the 1st Century B.C. to the 4th Century A.D. and confirm the technical evolution of craft shops, extraordinary creativity and craftsmanship of workers and, at the same time, the change of trends and tastes of the clients from the Republican era to the late Roman imperial period.

Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Norayr Hakhoyan (55 kg) won a silver medal at the Grand Prix of V. Balavadze and G. Kartozia being held in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The Armenian athlete lost to his Iranian opponent 2-3 in the fight for gold to become the runner up of the tournament, the National Olympic Committee’s press service reports.

In the same weight class, another Armenian wrestler Rudik Mkrtchyan beat his opponent 6-3 to win a bronze medal.

Wrestler Hrant Kalachyan (72 kg) also won bronze after defeating his rival 8-0.

The winner and the medalists of the tournament will be awarded $1000, $800 and $500, respectively.

Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, is hosting the European Diving Championship.

Armenia's representatives Vladimir Harutyunyan-Lev Sargsyan pair scored 358.80 points in the 10m springboard synchronized diving event and placed 4th.

Russian Aleksandr Belevtsev-Nikita Shleikher pair came first with 417.30 points, the National Olympic Committee’s press service reported.

Ukrainian Oleg Serbin-Aleksey Sereda won the silver medal and Mathew Dickson-Noa Williams pair from Great Britain – the bronze medal of the competition.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 8, ARMENPRESS. Nordwind Airlines flight NWS377 en route from Moscow to Yerevan aborted the takeoff on the runway of the Sheremetyevo Airport in the Russian capital due to technical problems in the engine, the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia said in a statement.

The takeoff was aborted by the Airbus A 321 plane’s captain.

There were 213 passengers on board.

No injuries were reported.

The airline replaced the plane and the passengers arrived to Yerevan at 22:27 local time.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 8, ARMENPRESS. The final goal of the Government of Armenia is having a common tariff for the calls between Armenia and Artsakh, ARMENPRESS reports chairman of the Public Services Regulatory Commission Garegin Baghramyan told the reporters on August 8.

“We have already reached an agreement with the Armenian operators that starting from January 1, 2020 there will be reduction of tariffs and regularly, in a period of 6 months, there will be a significant decline, on July 1 2020 and January 1, 2021”, he said, emphasizing that the final goal of this process is reaching a common tariff for calls.

Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan thinks it would be better if the secret investigative documents on March 1 case did not appear in the hands of media. ARMENPRESS reports Grigoryan expressed concern over the fact that the secret information appeared in the hands of the Russian service of BBC.

“Of course, we are concerned. It’s important for us that there is no leak of secret information because confidentiality means security and safety. It’s necessary to investigate and understand how those documents appeared in the hands of the media”, Grigoryan said.

He noted that there is no country in the world that do not encounter the problem of information leakage.

“Everybody encounters with the problem of confidentiality. WikiLeaks is a good example. The entire secret documents of one of the most powerful countries, the USA, appeared in the media. we are not insured but make all efforts to minimize the risks”, Grigoryan said.

BBC Russian service published an article yesterday about the March 1 tragic events, insisting that the shooting in the direction of the protestors was carried out under the commandment of Major-General Samvel Karapetyan. It also noted that the then incumbent President Robert Kocharyan and President-elect Serzh Sargsyan visited the unit stationed in the basement of the Presidential Residence, Baghramyan 26.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 8, ARMENPRESS. Yerevan’s Pyunik hosted English Wolverhampton in the third qualifying round of Europa League.

ARMENPRESS reports in the 1st ten minutes the teams had equal chances to score goals, but the English club strengthened the pressure and in the 29th minute was able to score a goal. At the end of the 1st round Wolverhampton again took the opportunity and again scored.

The Wolves scored the 3rd goal just at the beginning of the 2nd half. The Armenian club was defeated 0-4.

The next game between the teams will take place on August 15 in England.

“I wish that welfare, prosperity and peace always accompany your exclusive country and talented people. YEREVAN, AUGUST 9, ARMENPRESS. Kyrgyzstan’s ex-president Almazbek Atambayev has been charged with corruption, his lawyer Sergei Slesaryov has said on August 9.

“Ayambayev has been charged with corruption, there are no other details yet,” he said.

Slesyarov said that Atambayev has been placed under pre-trial detention until August 26.

The former leader of the country was arrested on August 8 in his home in the village of Koy-Tash.

A day before, when SWAT teams arrived to arrest him, his supporters gathered around the house to prevent Atambayev from being taken into custody. More than 40 people were injured, and one SWAT soldier was killed. Atambayev later said he was the one who opened gunfire.
