Armenians are victims of ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh – Kim Kardashian

 12:03,

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 12, ARMENPRESS. Armenian-American reality TV star, entrepreneur Kim Kardashian has expressed support to the Jewish people amid the Hamas attacks.

In a statement on Instagram, Kardashian slammed ‘brutal terrorism’ for claiming innocent lives, and said now ‘both Israeli and Palestinian civilians are suffering and paying the greatest price there is.’

“As an Armenian, I am particularly sensitive to these issues because I have been talking about the Armenian Genocide for years, and now, after months of blockade with minimal media coverage and no external support, Armenians are victims of an ethnic cleansing themselves in Artsakh,” Kim Kardashian added.

Below is the full statement released by Kim Kardashian on social media.

“A message to my Jewish friends and family. I love you. I support you. I have heard about how scared you feel during this time, and I want you to know you are not alone in this. My heart is broken seeing the videos of these babies and families being terrorized and murdered in front of the whole world! As human being with a heart, how can anyone not be devastated by these horrific images that we will never be able to unsee? Brutal terrorism has taken innocent lives and now both Israeli and Palestinian civilians are suffering and paying the greatest price there is. As an Armenian, I am particularly sensitive to these issues because I have been talking about the Armenian Genocide for years, and now, after months of blockade with minimal media coverage and no external support, Armenians are victims of an ethnic cleansing themselves in Artsakh [Nagorno-Karabakh]. They are in this moment also suffering from an extreme humanitarian crisis, and there are still prisoners of war being held captive or missing. No matter who’s side you are on, or how you have been triggered by the horrors of these past few days, our hearts should always have room for compassion towards innocent victims caught in the cross hairs of warring over power, politics, religion, race and ethnicity. Although I know there is nothing, I can do to personally get rid of the pain of those who are suffering, my family and I are praying for the safe return of hostages, for those that have died and their affected families, for peace for all the innocent, and for the perpetrators of this indefensible violence to be brought to justice.  My call to action today, something that we can all do, is simply to reach out to your friends, colleagues, and those in your community, those who are hurting, no matter what side they are on, check in on them and tell them you love them. I also ask that, during difficult times like these, not to judge who is or isn’t speaking out, because everyone should be allowed to deal with times of crisis in the way that they feel most comfortable, whether it be privately or publicly. Prayers and Peace always.”

Armenia moves humanitarian convoy to Goris for transfer to Nagorno-Karabakh

 14:51,

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 24, ARMENPRESS. Armenian authorities have decided to move the humanitarian goods envisaged for the people of Nagorno-Karabakh to Goris, from where it will be possible to organize the shipment of the aid to Nagorno-Karabakh through the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Russian peacekeeping contingent, the Armenian government’s working group in charge of managing the NK humanitarian crisis response announced Sunday.

Russia hopes Lachin Corridor will be unblocked parallel with Aghdam route opening

 17:35,

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. Russia hopes that soon the Lachin Corridor will be unblocked parallel with the Aghdam route and Nagorno-Karabakh will start receiving regular humanitarian aid from both directions, Russian Foreign Ministry representative Maria Zakharova said on September 12.

Speaking at a press briefing, Zakharova said that the foreign ministers of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan developed a plan on the simultaneous unblocking of the Lachin and Aghdam routes during their July 25 meeting in Moscow.

“Taking into consideration the significant difference in positions and the high level of mutual distrust, this work did not proceed easily. As a first step, on 12 September, 15 tons of food, personal hygiene products and beddings were conveyed to the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh requiring aid through the Russian Red Cross. We expect that taking into consideration the previously reached mutual-understanding, soon the Lachin Corridor will also be unblocked parallel with the Aghdam route, and then humanitarian aid will be regularly delivered to the region from the two directions,” Zakharova said, expressing hope that this way the humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh will be stabilized and the normal life of the population will be restored.

“This will in turn create conditions for launching dialogue between Baku and Stepanakert and relaunching the rhythmic work in the direction of implementing the entire complex of the 2020-2022 highest level trilateral agreements on the normalization of the Armenian-Azerbaijani relations,” she added.

Moscow ‘dissatisfied’ with Armenian prime minister’s statements about Russia — diplomat

TASS, Russia
Sept 4 2023
The source added that Russia views its relations with Armenia in the security and economic spheres “not as one country’s dependence on another, but as an equal, mutually beneficial and time-tested partnership”

MOSCOW, September 4. /TASS/. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s statements about Russia in an interview with Italian media are unacceptable in tone and Moscow is extremely dissatisfied with them, a diplomatic source has told TASS.

“Moscow is extremely dissatisfied with the latest public statements by the Armenian leadership, including the Armenian prime minister’s statements in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica and the Armenian Foreign Ministry’s commentary released on August 31. Both are regarded as unacceptable both in tone and content. Their aim is to shift responsibility for one’s own miscalculations and mistakes onto Russia,” the source said.

For instance, earlier Pashinyan mentioned the possibility of Russia’s estrangement from the region. “In fact, they (Western countries – TASS) are trying to artificially push Russia out of the South Caucasus and are using Yerevan as a means to achieve this goal. Russia, as Armenia’s closest neighbor and friend, has no intention of leaving the region. However, it should be a two-way street: Armenia should not become the West’s instrument to push Russia out,” the source said.

He added that Russia views its relations with Armenia in the security and economic spheres “not as one country’s dependence on another, but as an equal, mutually beneficial and time-tested partnership.”

That said, he noted that the fall 2020 armed standoff in many ways was the result of thoughtless and provocative steps by the Armenian leadership. “This significantly devalued the agreements reached by the sides along the line of the OSCE Minsk Group. Had it not been Russia’s intervention and President Vladimir Putin personally, the outcome of military actions would have been even more lamentable,” the diplomat pointed out.

He also branded the remarks about Russia’s purported indifference to Azerbaijan’s “aggression against the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia” as baseless. The diplomat reiterated that relevant consultations had taken place along the tracks of the foreign and defense ministries of the two countries and high-ranking representatives from the CSTO had visited the region.

Congressmen Schiff, Sherman call for U.S. action to end Azeri blockade of Nagorno- Karabakh

 16:15,

YEREVAN, AUGUST 25, ARMENPRESS. The Pan Armenian Council of Western USA has launched a 24-hour nationwide hunger strike in solidarity with Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

The Pan Armenian Council of Western USA demands affirmative action by U.S. President Biden and the U.S. Department of State, to prevent a new Armenian Genocide at the hands of the Aliyev regime by:

-Ensuring the immediate re-opening of the Lachin Corridor by introducing and facilitating the passage of a UN Security Council Resolution requiring Azerbaijan to adhere to the February 22, 2023, preliminary measure of the ICJ ordering Azerbaijan to open the Lachin Corridor;

-Immediately halting all U.S. military assistance to Azerbaijan in light of the illegal humanitarian blockade imposed on the Armenians of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), consistent with Section 907 of the FREEDOM Support Act;

-Sanctioning members of the Aliyev regime under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act for ongoing war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated by individual members of the Aliyev regime;

-Delivering $100 million in USAID humanitarian assistance to Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) through the Lachin Corridor to ensure the survival of the 120,000 civilians who have been completely blockaded since June 15, 2023;

-Introducing a UN Security Council resolution to establish a United Nations Mission in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) [UNMINK] consisting of 5,000 international military personnel to ensure the physical security of the population.

Congressmen Adam Schiff and Brad Sherman joined the members of the Armenian community for a press briefing during the demonstration held outside the Azeri consulate in Los Angeles.

“We are watching a humanitarian catastrophe unfold in Artsakh. Yesterday, I joined my colleague Adam Schiff and the Armenian community at a press conference in my district. We must hold the Aliyev regime accountable and end U.S. military assistance to Azerbaijan,” Sherman said on X.

Congressman Schiff called on the U.S. government to act.

“I stand with Artsakh’s 120,000 residents, and the Armenian diaspora defending them. Azerbaijan’s illegal blockade of the Lachin Corridor must end.  The US recognized the Armenian Genocide and said never again. We must do more than pledge. We must act,” Schiff said on X.

This conference launched a 24-hour nationwide hunger strike to demonstrate unity with the 120,000 residents of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) facing a dire humanitarian crisis caused by Azerbaijan’s ongoing illegal blockade of the Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Armenia and Artsakh.

“The future belongs to Armenia more than Azerbaijan” – Armenian analyst

JAM NEWS
Aug 21 2023

  • JAMnews
  • Richard Kirakosyan on the Armenia-Azerbaijan issue

“The future belongs to Armenia more than Azerbaijan, but it will take several years to achieve real results,” political scientist and head of the Center for Regional Studies Richard Kirakosyan, commenting on the reforms in the defense sector of Armenia, said.

In his opinion, Armenia is too weak and lags behind the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, so it should invest more in quality, not quantity, that is, “in professionalism and modernization.” The political scientist welcomes the government’s decision to purchase weapons from India and not rely on “poor quality weapons from unreliable sources such as Russia.”

On the air of Radio Azatutyun (Freedom), Kirakosyan also talked about the settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, the possible signing of a peace treaty, the blockade of the Lachin corridor, the position of the United States, Europe and Russia.

  • “A curious proposal on Karabakh”: a document attributed to Lavrov
  • Man dies of starvation in unrecognized NKR, blockade continues
  • “It is impossible to abandon the idea of opening the Lachin corridor by force.” Opinions from Yerevan

Kirakosyan commented on the results of the UN Security Council meeting, which was convened at the request of Armenia “in connection with the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh as a result of the blockade of the Lachin corridor by Azerbaijan.” The political scientist considers it important, but insufficient, that Baku had to respond to Yerevan’s diplomatic initiative.

Invites the government of Armenia to think about other steps, in particular

  • “refuse to negotiate until Azerbaijan ends the blockade of the Lachin corridor,
  • consider the possibility of air communication with Nagorno-Karabakh without a real risk of military aggression.”

Explaining the essence of the speech at the meeting of the UN Security Council of the representative of Russia, who promoted the position of Baku, Kirakosyan said:

“Russia’s position now is to save face. She supports the idea of the Aghdam corridor [we are talking about Azerbaijan’s offer to the Armenians of NK to use the route through its territory through Aghdam instead of the Lachin corridor linking the unrecognized republic with Armenia], in fact, admitting her own humiliation, because she was unable to fulfill her obligations under the terms of the ceasefire agreement”.

Opinions of members of the Security Council on the blockade of the Lachin corridor, assessment of the results of the discussion by the Prime Minister of Armenia, analysts’ comments on the likelihood of adopting a resolution

The analyst regards the blocking of the Lachin corridor, as a result of which 120,000 people are trying to survive in the conditions of a humanitarian catastrophe, as a war against civilians:

“If you look into the current situation, then we are dealing with a medieval siege, a blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh in the style of the Game of Thrones series. The cause of hunger and loss of life is not a drought, not a natural disaster, but a catastrophe created by man.”

According to him, what is happening is not new, but “another Azerbaijani escalation, the target of which is not the military but the civilian population.”

Speaking about the possible signing of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Richard Kirakosyan stressed:

“Judging by the internal political events in Azerbaijan, the current authorities need to constantly have a conflict and an enemy. I am much more interested and worried not about the peace process or the peace agreement, but about what will happen the next day. It will not be enough for Azerbaijan that it will receive after the signing of the peace treaty.”

Former Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian believes that the prime minister made a mistake by recognizing the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and this is the reason for the “blockade of the Lachin corridor”

“It was a mistake to allow Turkey to put forward preconditions in the process of normalizing relations with Armenia,” Kirakosyan said. Turkey’s precondition, he said, is not to do anything, not to take steps to normalize relations with Armenia until a peace treaty is signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan. At the same time, he believes that Turkey is very unhappy with its own weakness in relation to the now dominant Azerbaijan:

“It should be remembered that Azerbaijan is now the number one foreign direct investor in Turkey. He gained weight and influence during the economic crisis.”

Richard Kirakosyan believes that after the elections held in Turkey, “Armenia has become more important for Turkey”:

“Because Russia has actually excluded Turkey from all projects for the restoration of trade and transport. Normalizing relations with Armenia is the only way for Turkey to restore its regional role in the economy and trade.”

He believes that Turkey should not be perceived as “as strong as it was before”, now it is much more vulnerable, and this is proved by the events around Cyprus.

Regarding Turkey’s military support to Azerbaijan, he emphasizes that now it is much less than the help from Israel.

In the Armenian village of Margara, bordering Turkey, they are “cautiously optimistic” about a possible reopening of the border

The expert believes that unrest is possible in Azerbaijan, given the “precedent of a military coup in the 90s, as well as the presence of a minister of defense with dangerous ambitions, who receives the support of Turkey.”

According to him, changes in Azerbaijan are “guaranteed, but most of them will be negative” for the Armenian side:

“The question now is not whether there will be an “explosion” inside Azerbaijan, but when and how it will happen. I think Azerbaijan’s looming instability is being taken into account and has become a cause for concern in Washington, Brussels and Moscow.”

Victory in the 2020 Karabakh war, according to Kirakosyan, is “defective to a dangerous degree for the Azerbaijani authorities, and Aliyev is walking a tightrope of nationalism and is between competing elements inside Baku, supported by Russia and Turkey.” He thinks the tipping point is obvious:

“We have seen in recent weeks that even supporters of the Aliyev government have been arrested. That is, the Aliyev regime is now going against its own people, even in the conditions of confidence brought by victory.”

Former ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo published his opinion on the situation in the unrecognized NKR under the heading “Armenian Genocide in 2023”

“The states are postponing the suspension of Section 907, which was traditionally done in June. This means that the allocation of military assistance to Azerbaijan is being postponed.”

Amendment 907 to the Freedom Support Act was passed by the US Congress in 1992. It limits the provision of military assistance to Azerbaijan until Baku takes steps to lift the blockade from Armenia and NK and gives up the possibility of using force. However, the addition, adopted by Congress in 2002 to the 907th amendment, allows the suspension of the act by the President of the United States.

According to Kirakosyan, there are three reasons for this:

  • “The United States does not have much leverage on Azerbaijan, Article 907 is a rare exception,
  • after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan is now much less important to the Pentagon, has much less strategic importance,
  • the disappointment of the Americans, which is connected not only with the blockade of the Lachin corridor, but also with the latest round of Washington talks between the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan.”

At the same time, he does not think that this is important for Azerbaijan.

As for Armenian-American relations, Kirakosyan notes that there have been changes in US policy. In his opinion, the States are trying to strengthen the “strategic importance of a more democratic Armenia.”

He emphasizes that the point is not to help establish democracy in Armenia, but to protect its achievements.

“But it would be a mistake on the part of Armenia to overestimate the importance of the United States. It is the European observers [on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan], the European presence is probably more effective now.”

Peacekeepers facilitate transfer of 41 Russian and Nagorno-Karabakh citizens

 14:44,

YEREVAN, AUGUST 21, ARMENPRESS. For the first time in over two months, Russian peacekeepers have facilitated the transfer of over 40 people, citizens of Russia and Nagorno-Karabakh, from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia.

The Center for Cooperation with the Russian Peacekeeping Contingent of the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) Government said that 41 citizens of Russia and Nagorno-Karabakh were transported from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia on August 21 – the first such transfer since June 14.

“The Russian citizens were waiting for their transportation for a long time, while the citizens of Artsakh are students who have enrolled in universities in Armenia and abroad. According to a preliminary agreement reached with the peacekeepers, the transport of students and Russian citizens will continue in the coming days. Nevertheless, the Azerbaijani side continues to obstruct the movement of many persons in two directions. At this moment, hundreds of citizens are waiting in Armenia for their return to Artsakh, 333 people with conditions requiring urgent and planned intervention are on an ICRC waiting list for their transfer to Armenia, in addition to the thousands of people who require two-way movement for humanitarian, working and other purposes,” the Center for Cooperation with the Russian Peacekeeping Contingent of the Nagorno-Karabakh Government said in a statement, warning that Azerbaijan continues to create humiliating conditions in the illegal checkpoint at Hakari Bridge, in addition to the unlawful control and obstacles against Nagorno-Karabakh residents. “In particular, against the persons’ will, the Azerbaijanis and their invited journalists have again filmed the persons’ faces and used it for propaganda. Besides, the Azerbaijani side did not allow the Russian peacekeeping contingent’s vehicles to pass across Hakari Bridge and forced the passengers to carry their baggage and walk across the bridge,” it added. The passengers then continued to their destination on vehicles that approached from Goris. A video of the transfer has been released as evidence.

“The passage of the citizens through the illegal Azeri checkpoint doesn’t anyhow change the position of the government of the Republic of Artsakh regarding that checkpoint on Lachin Corridor and the remaining Azerbaijani obstructions. The government of the Republic of Artsakh continues to insist that unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and goods must be completely restored in both directions along Lachin Corridor without any Azeri interference, in accordance with the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement and the International Court of Justice 22 February 2023 and 6 July rulings,” the center added.

All humanitarian shipments into Nagorno-Karabakh have been banned by Azerbaijan since June 15.

Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia and the rest of the world, has been blocked by Azerbaijan since late 2022. The Azerbaijani blockade constitutes a gross violation of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh ceasefire agreement, which established that the 5km-wide Lachin Corridor shall be under the control of Russian peacekeepers. Furthermore, on February 22, 2023 the United Nations’ highest court – the International Court of Justice (ICJ) – ordered Azerbaijan to “take all steps at its disposal” to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.  Azerbaijan has been ignoring the order ever since. The ICJ reaffirmed its order on 6 July 2023.

Azerbaijan then illegally installed a checkpoint on Lachin Corridor. The blockade has led to shortages of essential products such as food and medication. Azerbaijan has also cut off gas and power supply into Nagorno Karabakh, with officials warning that Baku seeks to commit ethnic cleansing against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. Hospitals have suspended normal operations.

An Armenian humanitarian convoy carrying 400 tons of emergency aid is blocked by Azerbaijan at the entrance of Lachin Corridor.
