ISTANBUL, APRIL 28, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. The murder of
Agos weekly’s editor-in-chief Hrant Dink was a strong blow. Doctor,
professor Yusuf Halachoglu, the Chairman of the Turkish Historic
Association, stated in his interview to the Hurriyet daily.

Mentioning that "Hrant’s murder became the strongest blow for
the solution of the Armenian cause," the Turkish professor said:
"If Hrant Dink were alive, I would be able to carry out the most
efficient dialogue. He was a personality, with whom I would be able
to work. I did not share Hrant Dink’s all ideas, but in the recent
period some of his assertions coincided with our assertions."

"I had an idea, to invite Hrant Dink to the Historic Association
for organizing a conference. However, I was not fated to do it,"
Halachoglu said adding: "Unfortunately, the most important person,
with whom we could carry out a dialogue, was killed."

Deadly century yielded history’s worst killers

In this gallery of villains, such monsters as Goebbels and Himmler are
strictly B Team

NORMAN WEBSTER , The Gazette
Published: Sunday, April 27, 2008

What an accursed century it was, the one just past – surely the most
brutal in God’s long history. That’s a depressing way to begin any
story. But it’s hard to avoid when contemplating a list headed Killers
of the Twentieth Century, a roundup of the murderers, madmen and thugs
who so marked those ignoble years.

This grisly hit parade is the work of an Aussie named Bruce Harris,
working independently in Sydney. On his website
(), he describes himself as "a white,
middle-class university graduate with a BA in communications and an
interest in history and politics." His research is extensive, he says
he has no ideological axe to grind – and it should be noted, before we
label him a terminal gloomster, that he also has a list of Twentieth
Century Heroes for our contemplation.

But that’s for another day. The killers are more interesting.

Harris offers a rogues’ gallery ranging alphabetically from Uganda’s
dangerous buffoon Idi Amin, who awarded himself the Victoria Cross and
fed his opponents to the crocodiles, to Yahya Khan of Pakistan, the
man who lost Bangladesh in a bloody civil war. There are 24 major
entries of the infamous, plus 13 more labelled "other killers" – if
such monsters as Goebbels, Himmler and Mengele can ever be considered
a B team.

Here are some highlights.

Every man on the list (there are no women) has a "kill tally,"
estimating the number of human beings he hastened to their deaths. Not
surprisingly, the leaders are those household names Hitler, Stalin and
Mao. Adolf Hitler, responsible for the death of 46 million Europeans
in the Second World War, takes the prize as "the undisputed, all-time,
world champion of killers."

Hitler was Time magazine’s man of the year for 1938. In 1942, Time’s
choice was Joseph Stalin ("man of steel," killer of 20 million), for
opposing German aggression. One savage element of that struggle: In
1945, Soviet troops fighting in Germany raped at least 2 million
women, the largest case of mass rape in history.

Mao Zedong? Ruthless and amoral, he sent China down a blind alley with
his infantile Great Leap Forward of 1958-61. Estimates of the toll
range from 14 million to a monstrous 40 million deaths from
starvation, while Mao thundered around the land in his private train.

Those are the Big 3. Not that no one tried to emulate them. Francisco
Franco in Spain, Nicolae (Genius of the Carpathians) Ceausescu in
Romania, Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Kim Il Sung, the "iron-willed,
ever-victorious commander" of North Korea, were dictators who revelled
in cults of personality. Saddam also murdered his own sons-in-law.

Kim’s invasion of the south provoked the violence and suffering of the
Korean War. At 7 every morning, loudspeakers still broadcast the jolly
song 10 Million Human Bombs for Kim Il Sung to malnourished North
Koreans.

Ethnic cleansing and genocide were sorry features of the century, from
Cambodia to Rwanda to the former Yugoslavia and Turkey, which still
refuses to admit the sweeping away of its Armenians. In 1994 in
Rwanda, more than 500,000 Tutsis were slaughtered with the
encouragement of Hutu leader Théoneste Bagosora, aka Colonel Death,
while UN troops under Canada’s General Roméo Dallaire were forbidden
to intervene. Most of the killing was done close-up and bloody, with
machetes.

In cold figures, Cambodia was even worse. Execution, starvation and
simply working people to death eliminated about one-quarter of the
country’s population of 7 million during the demented rule of Pol Pot
and his Khmer Rouge.

Some lesser-known monsters of the century are revisited. For example,
Ante Pavelic, aka Butcher of the Balkans, leader of the Croatian
terrorist group Ustase during the Second World War. His men set out to
cleanse their land of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies with the slogan: "Kill a
third, expel a third, convert a third." Victims were shot, knifed,
bludgeoned and thrown live from cliffs.

Suharto of Indonesia, who died in January, racked up an impressive
death tally of 500,000 of his countrymen following a failed coup
attempt (rivers were literally clogged with bodies, creating serious
sanitation problems), plus another 250,000 East Timorese following
invasion of that territory in 1975.

To wind up, the royal touch of Belgium’s King Léopold II. His record
of cruelty and greed leaves one almost breathless. The king, you see,
personally controlled the Congo at the turn of the century, exploiting
its rubber and ivory riches with terror and atrocities. His army,
fighting rebel tribes, was ordered to cut off a victim’s right hand
for every bullet fired. When there weren’t enough dead victims, the
soldiers cut hands from the living to make sure things tallied.

Under Léopold’s rule, the population of the Congo fell from an
estimated 20 to 30 million to less than 9 million. Truly, the heart of
darkness.

"The most common and much talked topics during the elections are social
problems and for the voters it is very important candidate’s direction
and ideologies on this or that social item," Vazgen Khachikyan,
Republican Member and the head of Social Insurance State Committee.

"The difference is the social guarantees given by this or that
candidate," said Khachikyan and added that promises given by the
ongoing authorities are pensions, salaries, creation of jobs, and
educational, health issues and their reforms.

According to Armena Martirosyan, member of "Heritage" Party, said
that social issues are not necessarily in the first place in Armenia
as they are more connected with the process of elections, and who
forms the government.

The member of Heritage party mentioned some figures on the ongoing
social issues in Armenia: according to him the minimal salary in
Armenia is 25 thousands drams and the average is 88 thousands 172
drams. According to the deputy compared with 2005 the economic growth
was fixed 17.7%. He said that though those figures are official ones,
but he does not believe in them as recently the prices of oil were
increased but the economic growth was fixed 44%.

SOMERVILLE DROPS OUT OF "NO PLACE FOR HATE" PROGRAM

Somerville Journal
April 24 2008

Somerville – Following a number of cities in the area disgusted the ADL
won’t honor the Armenian Genocide, Somerville has shed its moniker of
"No Place for Hate."

It is now part of the "Partnership for Working Toward Inclusive
Communities."

after the Anti-Defamation League waffled on calling the mass killings
of up to 1.5 million ethnic Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman
Empire during and after World War I a genocide.

No Place for Hate is an ADL program.

"We think it is an important message to send," Somerville spokesman
Lesley Hawkins said. The announcement was timed today to coincide
with the day the genocide is commemorated.

Somerville is dropping the ADL but picking up a National League
of Cities program – "Partnership for Working Toward Inclusive
Communities."

Russia Reveals US Plans To Capture Caucasus

RUSSIA REVEALS US PLANS TO CAPTURE CAUCASUS

Pravda
April 23 2008
Russia

Russian Channel 1 presents a documentary ‘Plan Caucasus’ about the
plan of western intelligence service to make Caucasus the battlefield
between the Western world and Russia.

The reporter states that the first point was the ignition of Nagorny
Karabakh conflict and then in other places of Caucasus via the
nationalistic moods strengthening.

A Chechen man Abu Bakar, a news analyst of the German radio station
Â"Freedom" in the 60s, who worked under the pseudonym Berkan Yashar,
reveals the secret plans of the US Foggy Bottom. Baker was enrolled
by the USA, and even after he left ‘Freedom’ and headed for Turkey,
where he became a powerful authority, Abu remained a "grey eminence",
through whom the West controlled the situation in Caucasus and financed
separatists’ tribes.

He said that the plan of Chechnya annexation was backed by Germany,
France, Great Britain, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. His words were proved
with pictures of money, printed in Germany that might still be in
the Munich factory, and fake passports, printed in France.

His words are confirmed by some other people. Thus, Shamseddin Yusef,
the Foreign Secretary in Dudaev’s government, says: "CIA people even
took us to London. Then the war in Iraq started. They planned to take
over Chechnya after the victory in Iraq, but that war didn’t finish
as soon as they predicted.

Neither does Richard Perl, the ex- US Ministry of Defense counselor
and one of the key strategists of the war in Iraq, conceal the fact
that America tried to give spiritual and financial support to Dudaev.

The reporter also states, that Western powers pursued in Caucasus not
only political, but financial interest as well. Since 1992 with Jokhar
Dudaev’s help there operated a contraband canal that exported to the
West Russian diamonds and gold. For the right to drive it through
Chechnya Dubaev got a quarter of the profit received from diamonds’
gem-cutting and selling.

After the airport in Groznyy was shut in 1994, Berkan changed the
scheme of diamonds transportation and started to put them across
Pankiyskoe clove to Turkey.

Akhmed, one of Dudaev’s mates, states that the bloody story of Chechen
diamonds goes on even now. The money, saved between the First and
Second Chechen Wars, was put in the diamond mines of Africa.

The input of money into these mines gives enormous profits to Akhmed
Zakaev and Whice Akhmadov, the man, whose name was mentioned in
relation to Badri Patarkacishvili’s death.

Are Levies Credited To State Budget?

ARE LEVIES CREDITED TO STATE BUDGET?

A1+
22 April, 2008

"The law has not been changed. It is simply beyond my understanding why
the goods used to be tax freed at a lower price", declared Tsolvard
Gevorgian, Chairwoman of the Union of Armenian Merchants, doubting
even the crediting of the levied funds to the state budget.

"It was only after Serzh Sargssian’s strong consideration of the
problem that they had to observe the law."

The Chairwoman also stated that "The Law on Simplified Tax" was drafted
by their Union and for 8 years they had been struggling for it. "Our
economy was able to develop only due to the simplified tax, but they
made so many changes to it that it finally became a monster. And now
they abolish the law without a substitute."

According to Tsolvard Gevorgian minor merchants still survive but
they are not able to develop their business.

"The officials set up their business in the city center and they do
not pay any taxes. As a result minor merchants lost their consumers. I
sold my store and went out of business as I do not want to compete
with anyone."

By the way the Union of Merchants has 23 branches throughout Armenia.
