CNN SHOWS SCREAM BLOODY MURDER DOCUMENTARY ABOUT GENOCIDES

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ On March 7 CNN showed Scream Bloody Murder ,
a documentary about Genocides prepared by a known TV journalist,
Christian Amanpour. The author tells about the Armenian Genocide,
the Holocaust, the Genocide in Cambodia, Rwanda, Darfur, as well as
the massacres of Kurds during Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq.

The Armenian Genocide (1915-23) was the deliberate and systematic
destruction of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during
and just after World War I. It was characterized by massacres, and
deportations involving forced marches under conditions designed to
lead to the death of the deportees, with the total number of deaths
reaching 1.5 million. The majority of Armenian Diaspora communities
were formed by the Genocide survivors. To date, twenty countries and
44 U.S. states have officially recognized the events of the period as
Genocide, and most genocide scholars and historians accept this view.

Armenia Welcomes U.S. Congressional Committee’s Recognition of Armenian Genocide

BYLINE: Lilit Gevorgyan

Today, Armenian foreign minister Eduard Nalbandyan issued a statement
hailing the 4 March decision by U.S. lawmakers to define the massacres
of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide. Nalbandyan called the
decision by the U.S. House of Foreign Affairs Committee as an
important step forward for human rights and "an important step toward
the prevention of crimes against humanity". The Congressional
Committee’s resolution can now enter the House of Representatives for
a full vote. The resolution is non-binding and calls on U.S. president
Barack Obama to reflect on the Armenian genocide, and label the
killings of over 1.5 million Armenians accordingly in his annual
statements made on 24 April, the day when Armenians commemorate the
victims of genocide.

The voting on the resolution went ahead despite the last-minute call
from U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton to the Committee Chairman
Howard Berman urging him to defer the vote in order not to derail the
reconciliation efforts recently launched between Armenia and Turkey.
Prior to the Congressional Committee’s session Turkish president
Abdullah Gul had warned the U.S. administration of the serious
repercussions that passing the resolution could have for bilateral
relations. Berman opened the session by acknowledging Turkey’s role as
a vital and loyal ally but added that "nothing justifies Turkey’s
turning a blind eye to the reality of the Armenian genocide", urging
Turkey "to come to terms with its own history."

Significance:While the Armenian government and indeed the
6-million-strong Armenian Diaspora will celebrate the latest
resolution, they also realise that with the opposition of the Obama
administration, the document is not likely to garner enough support in
the House of Representatives. This is the second time in recent years
that the Congressional Committee has endorsed a resolution recognising
the Armenian genocide. The latest resolution was adopted in 2007.
However successive U.S. administrations have proven to follow the same
pattern when it comes to this painful issue both for Armenians and
Turks. Nearly all U.S. presidents, including Obama, have promised to
support the recognition of the genocide if elected to the White House.
However following their elections they have failed to deliver on their
promises as the benefit of a non-binding and morally motivated
resolution had been consistently outweighed by the importance of
maintaining U.S. relations with Turkey. Turkey is likely to use the
adoption of this resolution as an excuse to delay the ratification of
the Armenian-Turkish October 2009 peace protocols, aimed at
normalisation of bilateral relations (seeTurkey – Armenia: 12 October
2009:). Turkey has been hoping that by signing the protocols it would
be able to contain the Armenian government’s efforts to see worldwide
recognition of the genocide. However this policy by the Turkish
government is not likely to succeed given that the pursuit of the
recognition of the Armenian genocide is enshrined in the Armenian
declaration of independence and also it has not been an issue of
discussion during the signing of the October protocols.

The Turkish state television TRT will pay a financial compensation
to the family of former editor-in-chief of "Agos" Hrant Dink for
spreading false information after the court upheld the family’s claim.

In December 2008, the television station broadcasted its subsequent
program called "Labyrinth of Interests" dedicated to the events of
Marash in 1978 when over 100 people died as a result of the conflicts
between Aliyevs, Sunnis and Muslims.

One of the guests was nationalist deputy from Marash, Professor Okesh
Shandiler who announced that the bloody conflicts were provoked by
young left-wing figures, including Hrant Dink.

According to "Azatutyun" radio, the court ruled that Shandiler, TRT
and the company that was directly involved in preparing the program
series had to pay 20,000 Turkish Lira (nearly 13,000 dollars) to
Dink’s family. The family will transfer the money to the "Hrant Dink"
international foundation

BAKU: US Companies Oppose Armenian Bill

US COMPANIES OPPOSE ARMENIAN BILL

Major American companies from defence, aviation and the space
industry have called on the House of Representatives to reject the
Armenian bill.

They believe that if the draft is passed, it will endanger exports
to Turkey.

CEOs of the five major American aviation and space companies warned
that "if the draft passes through the Foreign Relations Committee,
it will lead to cracks in Turkish-American relations and risk American
business activities."

Also the Association of Aviation and Space Industries – an organization
representing more than 270 companies – said exports to Turkey tripled
in 2008 and went beyond $10 billion.

Chairperson of the association Marion Blakey says Turkey, who is one of
the most important trade partners of America, should not be offended.

Derb: You knew I’d take the bait. The story (from June of last year)
that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is Armenian appears to be a
hoax. The original seems to be a blog posting at a Dutch paper.

But if true, he wouldn’t be the first: Anastas Mikoyan (brother of
the MiG aircraft designer Artem Mikoyan) was president of the USSR
in the 1960s. He was a slippery SOB who served under — and managed
not to be killed by — Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev. Maybe
part of the price of that ability to survive was that his hometown
of Sanahin in northern Armenia hated his guts — there is (or was,
anyway) a Mikoyan museum there, almost exclusively about his brother
the MiG guy, with a picture somewhere saying, "Oh, yeah, and his
brother Anastas was president."

US Department Of State Daily Briefing

US DEPARTMENT OF STATE DAILYBRIEFING
Philip J. Crowley

/137691.htm
March 3 2010
Washington

QUESTION: I have a question on Armenian genocide resolution which will
be discussed on Thursday on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Last week,
Secretary Clinton made a statement on this issue and she said that
the United States is supporting the peace process ongoing between
Armenia and Turkey.

MR. CROWLEY: Mm-hmm.

QUESTION: But the problem is Turks are claiming that she supported
Turkey, and some Armenians is claiming that – or claim they supported
Armenians diaspora. Will State Department redefine his position on
this issue or that’s all that —

MR. CROWLEY: Well, first of all, I think we have supported the current
process that we hope will result in normalized relations between Turkey
and Armenia. And within that process, as the Secretary said last week,
we think that there is ample room for Turkey and Armenia to evaluate
the historical facts as to what happened decades ago. So we haven’t
changed our view, but we continue to engage at a high level with
both countries and to encourage them – having worked to reach the
agreement in Switzerland last year to see it implemented on both sides.

QUESTION: So Turks or Armenian are right on the comment?

MR. CROWLEY: Well, I – (laughter) – I think I would borrow a phrase
from what Richard just said the different context, is – is I think
this is clearly to see the advancement of normalized relations between
Armenia and Turkey is in the interest of both countries. It’s in the
interest of the region as well. We cannot afford to look at this in
zero sum terms, that somehow scoring a point on one side is a loss
for the other. So I would just say that we continue our high-level –
we’ve had intensive conversations at high levels. The Secretary has
been directly involved extensively and repeatedly. Deputy Secretary
Steinberg, Under Secretary Burns, Assistant Secretary Phil Gordon have
all been directly engaged with the leadership in Turkey and Armenia.

The Secretary had a meeting with Prime Minister Erdogan in Doha
talking about this issue.

So we continue to encourage both sides. We understand how difficult
this is, how emotional this is. There’s not a common understanding
of what happened 90 years ago. But we value the courageous steps
that both leaders have taken, and we just continue to encourage both
countries to move forward and not look backward.

QUESTION: Just to follow up.

MR. CROWLEY: Sure.

QUESTION: Do we have any scenario over the – if the resolution passes
by the committee, do we have a scenario about the relation with Turkey,
because there is a Turkish group – parliamentary group here in the
town and they are – they have meetings with congressmen in the House,
and they are saying that we are allied, and if this resolution passes,
some things will change. Did you get any feedback from Turkish foreign
ministry on the resolution about – if the —

MR. CROWLEY: I think we have a pretty good understanding of how
everyone feels on this issue.

Thank you.

GAYANIAN ORDER OF DEACONESSES RESPOND TO HIS HOLINESS ARAM I’S DECLARATION
OF 2010 YEAR OF ARMENIAN WOMEN

The vocation of deaconesses in the Armenian Church includes both liturgical
functions similar to those of deacons, and diakonal service. The vocation
nearly disappeared after the Armenian Genocide of 1915. During the 80s the
Gayanian Order of Deaconesses was revived in Antelias. Currently, the
sisters live in the compound of Birds’ Nest Orphanage in Byblos (Lebanon)
and serve the orphanage/school.

In response to the ‘2010 Year of Armenian Women’ the sisters began a
reflection/action process and decided to share the spirituality of the
Armenian Church with the members of the Community. The first activity was
organized around the theme of "the healing ministry of Jesus". Sister
Shenorhik Boyadjian spent a month at the Azounieh Hospital/Old People’s Home
in the Lebanese Mountains. During her stay she celebrated morning and
evening services and preached on the different aspects of the healing
ministry of Jesus Christ. The second activity was the publication of a
booklet entitled: "Spiritual guide to the Gospel". The book tells their
personal stories and struggles in achieving Christian life. Encouraged by
the positive response of the community, the sisters have decided to expand
their spiritual activities.
