GAYANIAN ORDER OF DEACONESSES RESPOND TO HIS HOLINESS ARAM I’S DECLARATION
OF 2010 YEAR OF ARMENIAN WOMEN

The vocation of deaconesses in the Armenian Church includes both liturgical
functions similar to those of deacons, and diakonal service. The vocation
nearly disappeared after the Armenian Genocide of 1915. During the 80s the
Gayanian Order of Deaconesses was revived in Antelias. Currently, the
sisters live in the compound of Birds’ Nest Orphanage in Byblos (Lebanon)
and serve the orphanage/school.

In response to the ‘2010 Year of Armenian Women’ the sisters began a
reflection/action process and decided to share the spirituality of the
Armenian Church with the members of the Community. The first activity was
organized around the theme of "the healing ministry of Jesus". Sister
Shenorhik Boyadjian spent a month at the Azounieh Hospital/Old People’s Home
in the Lebanese Mountains. During her stay she celebrated morning and
evening services and preached on the different aspects of the healing
ministry of Jesus Christ. The second activity was the publication of a
booklet entitled: "Spiritual guide to the Gospel". The book tells their
personal stories and struggles in achieving Christian life. Encouraged by
the positive response of the community, the sisters have decided to expand
their spiritual activities.
