Theater
Clair de Luna
By Aram Kouyoumdjian

The light of the moon has been shining a little brighter ever since
the Luna Playhouse opened its doors in September, traditionally the
start of the theater season. As the season formally ends with the
onset of summer, the time is opportune to take a look at Luna’s
first "year" in existence.

The intimate, 49-seat venue in Glendale is run, synergistically, by
Aramazd Stepanian, Lilly Thomassian, and Maro Parian, who share
directing and producing duties. They created the Luna space after
clearing a daunting number of financial and legal hurdles – and they
operate it at tremendous personal sacrifice.

Thomassian is a playwright, and "Thirst," her intriguing rumination
on war, written in the style of Greek tragedy, was the premier
production at the new theater. Parian directed that piece and has
since designed sets and costumes for nearly all Luna shows. The
playhouse further benefits from the talents of resident designers
like Henrik Mansourian (lights) and Shahen Hagobian (sound).

Since "Thirst," three full-scale productions have been mounted at
Luna. Stepanian directed "Hanoon Hayreniki yev Zhoghovrdi" (In the
Name of the People and the Fatherland) – a contemporary satire by
Gevorg Sargsyan – with inventive panache. Earlier, he had helmed
Aghasi Ayvazyan’s "Zhangark" (Twilight) while heading the Armenian
Theater Company, which has now been absorbed into the Luna ensemble.

To date, I have seen almost all Luna fare with an Armenian
connection, but the venue has offered an eclectic, cross-cultural
selection of plays, including the Irish-themed "Bailegangaire" and
the upcoming "Chinatown Correspondent."

Currently serving up laughs, under Thomassian’s direction, is "The
Lady in Question," a parody of film noir. Although no masterwork of
comedy, "Lady," set in Germany circa 1940, revolves around a femme
fatale, the internationally renowned pianist Gertrude Garnet, and her
efforts to help a fellow artist escape from Nazi capture. The
tickler in this piece of theatrical camp by "drag legend" Charles
Busch is that Gertrude gets played by a man. At Luna, R. Christofer
Sands shines in the role, amidst a gifted cast.

On the quieter side, solo performances have found a supportive venue
at Luna. Earlier this year, "On the Couch with Nora Armani" enjoyed
a brief run there. The question of ethnic identity was a key theme
for the Egypt-born Armenian actress, just as it is for Anahid
Aramouni Keshishian in "Ka yev Chka" (There Is and There Isn’t),
which is now playing (in repertory). In this Armenian-language
piece, Keshishian regales her audience with astutely observed
stories – both funny and poignant – of her childhood in Iran. Later
on this summer, Arpie Dadoyan will take the stage for a triptych of
sorts, presenting three separate solo works in quick succession.

While welcoming established artists, Luna has afforded opportunities
for emerging talents as well, showcasing Jacklyn Narian’s "Stuffed
Grape Leaves" this spring. That modest piece attested to Luna’s
nurturing embrace of neophyte efforts.

Not all is perfect at the playhouse. Some of its productions have
suffered the lack of a well-trained stage crew – always a challenge
in theaters struggling to achieve high production values on limited
budgets. Staffing its control booth with experienced board operators
needs to become a priority in Luna’s second season.

And what a season that promises to be. The playhouse has already
announced a William Saroyan double-bill (including the rarely-
staged "Hello Out There"), to be followed by a production of Harold
Pinter’s "The Lover" … in Armenian! That translation alone – by
Artashes Emin and Aramazd Stepanian – will mark a significant
contribution to Armenian theater. Now, if only the rumor that an
Armenian version of Arthur Miller’s "All My Sons" is forthcoming
would turn out to be true …

In the span of a single season, Luna has proven itself a serious
player on the theatrical scene. Hopefully, the Armenian community
will recognize – and revel in – its sparkle.

BAKU: Mediators Not Expecting ‘Breakthrough’ In Forthcoming Meeting

MEDIATORS NOT EXPECTING ‘BREAKTHROUGH’ IN FORTHCOMING MEETING OF ARMENIA AND AZERBAIJAN

Trend News Agency, Azerbaijan
June 8 2007

US Ambassador Matthew Bryza, an OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair, stated in
a news conference in Yerevan that he does not expect a breakthrough
in the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the forthcoming
meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents in St. Petersburg
on 9 June, Armenian news agency Mediamax reports.

The OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict
settlement held very honest and open talks with Armenian President
Robert Kocharian and Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian, Bryza
stressed. "We discussed the manifestation of optimism and pessimism.

I am optimistic, because I am a mediator and I work to regulate
the conflict."

On 5 June Armenian President Robert Kocharian stated in an interview
with Mediamax that he is well-aware of the source of the US diplomat’s
optimism. The current state of negotiations, as well as the stance
the Azerbaijani side has taken over the past two months makes positive
results least hopeful.

Bryza explained his optimism with the changes in the resolution
observed this past year. He reminded those attending the press
conference that when he joined the OSCE Minsk Group a year ago the
mediators decided to cease their activities and make proposals on a
resolution. Several rounds of talks were held afterwards between the
Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the Presidents of
Armenia and Azerbaijan met in Minsk.

"The April meeting of the Foreign Ministers in Belgrade revealed
the necessity for a new meeting of the Presidents due on 9 June,"
Bryza added.

"Thus, over this period the process experienced quality changes and
this is the major cause for my optimism," the mediator elaborated.

The parties are solving their disagreements, while there are still
some that are disputable.

In his turn, French Ambassador Bernard Fassier said it will be possible
to speak about a breakthrough only when the Presidents of Azerbaijan
and Armenia will instruct their ministers to commence work over the
text of a peace agreement.

Commenting on the Armenian President’s statement, stressing the
importance of defining Nagorno-Karabakh for his country, Bryza said
that every side has its priorities and such an approach is not a
surprise for him. "During the process we did not act with closed eyes,
but took into consideration the importance of the status and security
of the Armenian side.

Pressure Of International Organizations Is Only Weapon

PRESSURE OF INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS IS ONLY WEAPON

On June 8 the Civil National Initiative held a discussion entitled
"Levon Gulyan: One Life – Challenge to Society". Levon Gulyan was the
director of the Pandok Restaurant. He witnessed assassination in front
of his restaurant and was invited to the Police Department of Shengavit
on May 12 and afterwards taken to the town department where he died
some time later. His family say he was beaten to death, and denounce
Hovik Tamamyan, a senior police official. The Police maintain Levon
Gulyan tried to escape and fell out of the window of the second floor.

Representatives of NGOs, members of parliament from the Heritage Party
took part in the discussion. The leader of the Heritage Party Raffi
Hovannisian said the state is secure if every citizen is secure in
their own country protected "by the law and civil rights." According
to Raffi Hovannisian, Levon Gulyan’s death is a tragedy not only for
Gulyan’s family and friends but also for Armenia, because nobody has
the right to violate human dignity, the life given to us by God.

Jemma Gulyan, Levon Gulyan’s wife, told that Levon had been invited
to the police before May 12 and returned home. On May 12, a few hours
before the tragedy, he had already been to the Police. "He could
not have escaped." The Office of Prosecutor General took criminal
proceedings under the article "to lead to suicide". According to
Levon’s family, the police is trying to hide the wrongdoers, Hovik
Tamamyan, and accuse Levon Gulyan in the assassination in front of
his restaurant.

The representatives of the NGOs think the man dies at the law
enforcement agency, there are charges of leading a person into
committing a suicide, consequently, "the guilt of the Police
is acknowledged." And it is not important whether Hovik Tamamyan
is guilty or not, it is important who is guilty. However, the only
hope is the international organizations. The chair of the Hope NGO
Karen Hakobyan thinks the pressure of the international organization
is the only way to reach justice. "Armenia is becoming increasingly
autocratic, there is no guarantee that there will be no pressure on
NGOs, and crackdown on pluralism."

For the sake of justice the Yerevan office of the OSCE invited
experts from Germany and Denmark who examined the body. However,
their conclusion has not reached Armenia, although they said to send
it by express main.

The Prosecutor General promised transparency to the relatives of Levon
Gulyan. The relatives said they have seen no transparency so far. Armen
Harutiunyan, the ombudsman of Armenia, promised to focus on this case.

On June 7, the court for gross military crimes chaired by Judge
Mamedbagir Zeinalov will hold preliminary meeting dedicated to the
case of former serviceman Eldeniz Nuriev. Nuriev is charged according
to three articles of the Criminal Code: high treason, breaching
combat duty rules and deserting. Nuriev was captured by Armenians on
December 31 of 2006 on the territory of the Fizuli District. With
the assistance of international organizations, he was released on
January 16 of 2007. The court will also hold a preliminary meeting
dedicated to the case of three other former servicemen: Elman Akhmedov,
Ramin Mamedagaev and Agasalim Salimov. According to investigators,
these servicemen were caught in relations with the enemy between
July and October of 2006 during sentinel service. Agents of the
National Security Ministry revealed these relations and arrested the
servicemen. Both trials will be held in a closed regime.

Dashnaktsutyun Party May Not Become A Part Of RA Governmental Coalit

DASHNAKTSUTYUN PARTY MAY NOT BECOME A PART OF RA GOVERNMENTAL COALITION

DeFacto Agency, Armenia
June 6 2007

Dashnaktsutyun Party may not become a part of a coalition, unless it
supports RA PM Serge Sargsian’s nominee at the Presidential elections
to be held in 2008, a member of RA Republican Party Council Galust
Sahakian stated in the course of a press conference on Tuesday.

In his words, if Dashnaktsutyun offers its nominee at the Presidential
elections, it will be "a partial cooperation, and not a strong one,
like a bloc or a coalition".

"I think it is absurd, if the coalition is formed and strong ties
are established, and the forces coming together will support various
nominees", Sahakian said.

Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) is in the third
place, according to the outcomes of the Parliamentary elections. It
has received 13% of the electorate’s votes.

ARFD is one of Armenia’s oldest parties, established in 1890.

After the Parliamentary elections held in 2003 ARF Dashnaktsutyun
entered the ruling coalition with the RA Republican Party and Orinats
Yerkir Party, which left the coalition in May 2006.

Karabakh Leader Wants To Join Peace Talks

KARABAKH LEADER WANTS TO JOIN PEACE TALKS

Reuters, UK
June 6 2007

YEREVAN, June 5 (Reuters) – Nagorno-Karabakh’s separatist leader Arkady
Gukasyan said on Tuesday the region should be involved in peace talks
rather than waiting for Azerbaijan and Armenia to decide its fate.

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)
is trying to broker a peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia to
cement a 1994 ceasefire to end a war over Karabakh, in which more
than 35,000 people were killed.

Karabakh, an enclave in Azeri territory, is almost entirely populated
by ethnic Armenians since many of the ethnic Azeri minority were
driven out in the fighting in the early 1990s.

The presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan are due to meet on Saturday to
discuss the situation in and round Karabakh whose 140,000 inhabitants
have voted in favour of independence. It is not internationally
recognised as a country.

The region is represented by Armenia in the peace talks and Gukasyan
said that while they did not see eye-to-eye on everything, he felt
Karabakh’s wishes — particularly for self-determination — were
being heard.

"Karabakh will never agree to be part of Azerbaijan. We will not give
up our freedom. If there is no agreement on status, everything else
is out," Gukasyan said after meeting the OSCE.

"Keeping discussions between Armenia and Azerbaijan is destructive,"
he told reporters in the Armenian capital Yerevan.

"We are talking about the destiny of Karabakh and I don’t see any
reason for us not to be in the negotiations. Karabakh should have
the final word."

The OSCE hopes Armenia and Azerbaijan will leave aside the thorny
issue of who rules Karabakh and instead agree practical steps to
return Azeri refugees to districts round Karabakh, secure a corridor
between the enclave and Armenia, and allow international peacekeepers
to monitor the moves.

Despite wanting a seat at the negotiating table, Gukasyan said he was
ready to see if Armenia and Azerbaijan came up with a deal acceptable
to Karabakh.

"Let’s let the negotiations finish first and then we’ll assess the
situation," he said.

"Unfortunately I don’t see a resolution. Karabakh will have to get
involved sooner or later, if they want to solve specific issues."
