Several opposition MPs meet with Armenian police chief

Several opposition deputies meet with Armenian police chief Vahe Ghazaryan.

Parliament Vice Speaker, representative of the ARF Supreme Council Ishkhan Saghatelyan said at the police building that the Resistance movement has no problems with the police, their problem is Nikol Pashinyan, whose main support is the police.

“You must serve the Republic of Armenia, not this madman,” Saghatelyan said.

Saghatelyan presented the demands of the Resistance movement. The first is to suspend the activities of the police and hold them criminally liable for the use of violence against protesters and deputies these days.

The second is to find out who gave instructions and guarantees to police officers who acted illegally.

The third demand is addressed to the chief of police. Members of the Resistance movement demand that the chief of police condemn the barbaric actions committed these days. The last requirement is a meeting with the chief of police.

Lithuanian President, First Lady visit Armenian Genocide memorial in Yerevan

YEREVAN, MAY 20, ARMENPRESS. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and First Lady Diana Nausėdienė visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan during their official visit to Armenia.

President Nausėda laid a wreath at the memorial and flowers at the Eternal Flame in honor of the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

President Gitanas Nausėda and First Lady Diana Nausėdienė then visited the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute.

In a Twitter post, President Nausėda shared photos from the visit and wrote: “Paying tribute to the victims of Armenian genocide. It is a dark moment in human history that shall never be forgotten. Հիշատակը հավերժ է [Eternal Memory].”

Lithuania officially recognized the Armenian Genocide in 2005.

Minister Sanosyan, Ambassador Kopecky discuss issue of production of small aircrafts by Czech company in Stepanavan

YEREVAN, MAY 20, ARMENPRESS. Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Gnel Sanosyan received Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Armenia Bedrich Kopecky, the ministry said in a news release.

During the meeting the engagement of Czech companies into energy and transportation sectors was discussed.

The sides emphasized the importance of the cooperation of the Armenian NPP with the Czech companies in the field of nuclear technologies.  

The discussion also focused on the issue of production of small aircrafts by the Czech Balus Tech company in Armenia’s Stepanavan town. The Czech Ambassador highly appreciated the readiness of Armenia to cooperate with the Czech companies.

Other issues of mutual interest were also discussed.

Freedom House concerned about Armenia’s anti-defamation law

PanARMENIAN.Net - Marc Behrendt, the Director for Europe and Eurasia programs at Freedom House, has said that Armenia has made progress in democracy and human rights, but added that the organziation is concerned about legislation criminalizing defamation, Factor TV reports.

Behrendt told a forum on Armenian democracy in Yerevan on Friday, May 20 that the new law could restrict freedom of _expression_ in the country. He urged the government and the National Assembly to pay attention to criticism on the matter.

The expert also assured that Freedom House will do their best to achieve positive changes in the fight against disinformation in Armenia

Earlier too the organization slammed the new legislation as "controversial", which it said signifies a clear degradation of democratic norms in Armenia, including freedom of _expression_. Freedom House called on the Armenian authorities to immediately cease enforcement of the law.

YEREVAN, MAY 16, ARMENPRESS. The preliminary results of the parliamentary elections held in Lebanon on May 15 have been announced. Editor-in-chief of the Lebanon-based Azdag daily Shahan Gantaharyan told Armenpress that there will be 6 ethnic Armenian MPs in the parliament of Lebanon.

“3 of the ethnic Armenians elected to the parliament are the candidates of the ARF – Hagop Pakradouni, Hagop Terzian and George Bouchikian. They were elected by the lists of the electoral bloc formed with different political forces of Lebanon. Jihat Pakradouni was elected by the list of the Lebanese Forces party. Jean Talouzian will take the seat reserved for the Armenian Catholic community, Paula Yacoubian was elected by the list of the public movement. I want to repeat that these are very preliminary results, as the official results are not published yet”, Shahan Gantaharyan said.

YEREVAN, MAY 12, ARMENPRESS. Minister of Finance of Armenia Tigran Khachatryan participated in the annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) from May 9 to 12, the ministry said in a news release.

The actions taken so far within the frames of the EBRD activity and the registered results were summed up during the meeting. The governors were introduced on the details of implementation of the EBRD’s 2021-2025 strategic and capital program.

During the official visit in Morocco, minister Khachatryan met with the top officials of the EBRD, discussing the latest developments of the global economy and the existing challenges, touching upon Armenia’s cooperation with the Bank. The sides attached importance to the ongoing EBRD-funded infrastructure projects in Armenia, as well as outlined the prospects of expanding the future cooperation.

The Armenian minister also met with the representatives of the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and discussed the opportunities of the bank’s partnership with Armenia.

Construction of Friendship Bridge at Armenia-Georgia border enters final phase

YEREVAN, MAY 13, ARMENPRESS. The construction of the Friendship Bridge on the Armenian-Georgian border’s Sadakhlo-Bagratashen border crossing point is in the final phase.

The construction of the bridge is a joint Armenian-Georgian program, funded by the EBRD and the governments of Armenia and Georgia.

The bridge will ease traffic and facilitate passenger and cargo movement.

 



Asbarez: Glendale Memorial Hospital Commemorates 107th Anniversary of Armenian Genocide

Glendale Memorial's Rev. Sarkis Karaminassian led the group in a prayer

Dignity Health – Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center invited staff and physicians to commemorate the 107th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on Friday, April 22.

President and CEO of Glendale Memorial Jill Welton opened the event in the hospital’s main lobby with a history of the genocide, and emphasized the importance of remembering and never forgetting this history and its victims.   

Glendale Memorial’s Rev. Sarkis Karaminassian read a poem by an Armenian writer, and shared his own grandmother’s personal experience in fleeing the genocide.

Those in attendance were invited to light electric candles in honor of the lives lost in the ArmenianGenocide and were gifted a candle to light at home with their loved ones.

In honor of the resiliency and historical contributions by Armenains, staff members Marie Filipian and Armenui Agadzhaanyan named 10 Armenian women and men who have made remarkable contributions to our society.

Armenian Genocide 107th anniversary international symposium held in Athens

The embassy of Armenia Armenian in Greece organized an international symposium in Athens—and dedicated to the 107th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Representatives of the Athens City Hall, ambassadors accredited to Greece, scholars, and members of the Armenian community attended this symposium, the embassy added..

Geoffrey  Robertson, a well-known British human rights barrister, academic, author and broadcaster, delivered opening remarks.

The keynote speaker of the event was Ara Sarafian, the founder and director of the Gomidas Institute in London. He delivered a lecture entitled "Turkey and the Armenian Genocide: Commission, Consolidation and Denial."

Also, a documentary short film was shown, which was entitled “Blue Book: Evidence of Armenian Genocide,” which was shot in 2015 by the UK company Ballista Media in the context of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide.

Armenia’s Gyumri and Norway’s Kragero become Sister Cities

GYUMRI, APRIL 25, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian city of Gyumri and Norway’s town of Kragerø became Sister Cities.

Kragero Mayor Grunde Knudsen was on an official visit to Gyumri on April 25 and the memorandum declaring Gyumri and Kragero Sister Cities was signed at the Gyumri City Hall by Gyumri First Vice Mayor Artur Papikyan and Knudsen.

The decision was developed earlier in 2018 by then-mayor of Gyumri Samvel Balasanyan and then-mayor of Kragero Jone Blikra.

“As Sister Cities, the first cooperation will be in the areas of culture and education, but we are planning business cooperation in the future as well. Rather good cooperation is expected,” Knudsen told ARMENPRESS.

He said that one Armenian family resides in Kragero now.

“This is my first visit to Armenia, I hope that after next year’s election I’ll have the chance to visit Armenia again, a country that surprised me with its rich historical and cultural heritage. I really received very positive energy from Armenia, I am touched by the attitude of people, you are very open and warm people. I am happy and proud that we signed the memorandum between the two cities, for the benefit of development of the two cities,” he said.

In turn, the Gyumri Vice Mayor said he is hopeful that a productive cooperation will take place.
