Azerbaijani press: Recognition of so-called "Armenian genocide" to be discussed in Israeli parliament

00:29 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, May 24

Trend:

Israeli parliamentarians decided to hold a plenary discussion on the recognition of the so-called. “Armenian genocide” against the backdrop of worsening relations with Turkey, Knesset’s (Israel’s parliament) press-service reports.

The decision was not met with objections from the government, which in the past tried to block such initiatives.

Armenia and the Armenian lobby claim that the predecessor of Turkey – the Ottoman Empire – committed the so-called “genocide” against Armenians living in Anatolia in 1915.

Azerbaijani press: Georgian gov’t won’t oppose public opinion and agree to open alternative route to Armenia – political analyst

If Georgia agrees to open a transit corridor to Armenia from the occupied territories, it will be considered economic legitimization of the occupied lands, Georgian political analyst Gela Vasadze told APA.

Vasadze said that if Georgia takes steps to open the corridor, the policy of non-recognition of the occupied territories can be questioned.

“Although the legal and technical opening of this route is possible, the issue has been so extensively discussed that there is an impression that the road will not be opened for 10 years. This decision will be made in the format of Russia-US relations, not in the Abashidze-Karasin meeting, which is a technical discussion,” he said.

Vasadze thinks that without the consent of Washington, the Georgian leadership will not accept the opening of the road.

“If this corridor opens, Washington and Moscow will be part of a larger deal on the region. Washington will take part in this deal from the Georgian side only. Moscow, on the other hand, will most likely represent the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides,” he added.

According to the political analyst, the South Caucasus region is the only region where the U.S. and Russia can achieve any concessions or achievements.

“The opening of this route is very important for the Kremlin, because Russia is nearing international isolation and is doing everything possible to get out of it. The U.S. needs this “success story” as in Trump wanting to reach an agreement on any issue with Putin. This issue may be related to our region. Due to the fact they are unable to reach an agreement on any issue in other areas,” Vasadze said.

The Georgian political analyst said he thinks the impact of the corridor on Armenia’s economic development will be zero.

“This issue is of political importance and if we look at it from the context of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, if there is an opening, it will be presented as an achievement for Armenia. That is, another alternative way for Armenia has been opened and the political blockade of Azerbaijan has been disrupted,” he said.

Vasadze said he does not believe that the Georgian government will decide on opening the corridor.  “The most important point in this issue is public opinion which opposes the opening of this route. Therefore, I think that the Georgian government will not oppose public opinion and agree to open an alterative route to Armenia,” he added.

The meeting participants dispelled the concerns according to which the change of the political situation in the country could have undermined the normal activity of this very important field.

Moreover, the meeting participants happily stated that the statement issued based on the results of the previous meeting left a great impact, and the flow of donations to oncology and hematology charity funds have significantly increased. They reaffirmed readiness to unite all efforts and capacities to continue the treatment of children suffering from cancer.

For this purpose it is expected to create a major foundation with the participation of charity funds and specialists of the field which will coordinate the activities and will act on behalf of all specialists, organizations and individuals concerned over this issue. In this sense Anna Hakobyan was proposed to be included in the Board of Trustees.

Mrs. Anna Hakobyan gave her approval with pleasure and expressed confidence that the foundation will be open to cooperation with all concerned organizations and will operate exclusively in a transparent and coordinated manner.

Azerbaijani press: EU does not import any goods or services from Nagorno-Karabakh: EU official

Azerbaijan is a major factor in the region’s stability, said Ambassador Kamil Khasiyev, representative of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

He made the statement in his speech on the negotiations and the current situation in respect of settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict at the second session of the 15th meeting of the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee in Baku on May 8, APA reports.

Khasiyev said Azerbaijan has been able to create not only bilateral but also trilateral cooperation formats.

“If we look at the format of Azerbaijan-Turkey-Georgia trilateral cooperation today, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line projects have been implemented. At present, the TANAP project is being implemented. The Azerbaijani-Russian-Iranian trilateral cooperation format plays a role in the formation of the North-South transport corridor. We are one of the most active participants in regional projects. I have been the ambassador of Azerbaijan to Croatia. European Union countries also have the opportunity to join the projects that Azerbaijan is a member of. One such project is TAP. Greece, Italy and Albania are among the participants in this project. By regional cooperation, we refer to other initiatives of cooperation with other regions,” he added.

Vassilis Maragos, Head of Unit at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations said that Azerbaijan is a member of the Eastern Partnership program.

“This is also a form of regional cooperation. The EU supports the Southern Gas Corridor project. Our trade relations with Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia are expanding within the association agreement. We hope that a new agreement with Azerbaijan will play its role in increasing trade relations. On the other hand, representation of the EU in Azerbaijan renders assistance to the country through various programs. We expect for investment programs to be implemented in transport area at the end of this year. 200 million euros have been allocated for the Eastern Partnership countries on exchange of youth at the academic level. We will cooperate with Azerbaijan in this field as well. The exchange program will last till 2020,” he noted.

Maragos emphasized that the EU does not import any goods or services from Nagorno-Karabakh.

“We are talking about the cases of abuse related to origin countries. The European Commission has sent relevant notifications to countries. From this point of view, I do not think that we demonstrate double standards on this issue. The EU does not export any goods or services from Nagorno-Karabakh,” he added.

Turkish press: Armenia opposition leader calls for fresh protests after parliament rejects PM bid

Armenian opposition leader Nikol Pashinian on Tuesday urged his supporters to launch a campaign of civil disobedience and block key transport links including an airport after he failed in his bid to get elected as prime minister.

“From 8:15 am tomorrow (Wednesday) all roads should be blocked, I announce a general strike,” Pashinian told tens of thousands of supporters gathered in the capital Yerevan’s Republic Square.

“A revolution of love and tolerance is continuing,” he said, also urging people to turn out for a huge rally Wednesday evening as the crowds chanted “Nikol! Nikol!”.

The Armenian parliament had rejected making the opposition lawmaker who led weeks of anti-government rallies the country’s prime minister Tuesday as tens of thousands of supporters awaited the vote outside.

After a nine hour session, the chamber voted 45-55 against appointing Pashinian, who was the only candidate nominated to replace the ex-president who resigned as prime minister due to the protests.

“The political force which declared a war against its own people has destroyed itself,” Pashinian said in parliament after the vote.

“No one will be able to take victory away from the people.”

Between 30,000 and 40,000 opposition supporters spent the day peacefully rallying outside the parliament building to support Pashinian. The vote’s outcome enraged many of them.

“They spat on us but we’re not going to tolerate this,” bakery owner Samvel Rustamyan, 46, said while jeering and punching his fists in the air. “This government just won’t resign on its own will. It’s tens of thousands of us, and we need to them go. We can’t take this anymore.”

Pashinian told colleagues in parliament before the vote that Armenia would be roiled by a “political tsunami,” if the majority party did not support him.

“I would like to warn you that your attempts to interpret the tolerance of the popular movement as weakness could cause unexpected and undesirable consequences,” Pashinian said, addressing members of the ruling Republican Party from the rostrum. “Get sober until it’s too late, because your behavior could cause a political tsunami.”

The Armenian Constitution dictates that parliament will convene next week for another vote.

Pashinian spearheaded the protests that forced Serzh Sargsyan to resign after less than a week as premier. Sargsyan led Armenia as president for 10 years until term limits forced him to step down and was made prime minister in mid-April.

The opposition in this Caucasus Mountains country saw Sargsyan’s move into the prime minister’s chair as an attempt by him to stay in power indefinitely.

While Pashinian was the only candidate for prime minister, the chamber is controlled by Sargsyan’s Republicans. Not a single Republican lawmaker appeared to have voted for him.

Before the vote, lawmakers grilled Pashinian during a question-and-answer session. Later, dozens of them took the floor to speak about Pashinian’s candidacy.

Republican deputies accused Pashinian of exploiting the young people who have been his core supporters. Some said Pashinian does not have a program to offer the country.

Opposition members of parliament joined Pashinian in warning that a vote against him would be a vote against the tens of thousands of people who joined the anti-government rallies in recent weeks.

“The only thing that people on this square will accept is Pashinian’s win, changes in the country and the ouster of the old clan,” said engineer David Babayan, 47, who came to the Republic Square with his wife and 10-year-old son.

    Call it what it is
EDITOR: If President Donald Trump was led to attacks in Syria by
what he saw on TV, how much more horrified would he be by seeing
pictures of what the Ottoman Empire implemented in two phases
against 1.5 million Christian Armenians in 1915-1923? "Trump: US,
allied strikes aimed at Syria's chemical weapons," April 14.
First, the wholesale killing of the able-bodied male population
through massacre and subjection of army conscripts to forced
labor. Secondly, followed by the deportation of women, children,
the elderly, and the infirm on death marches leading to the Syrian
town of Deir ez-Zor and the surrounding desert. Driven forward by
military escorts, the deportees were deprived of food and water
and subjected to periodic robbery, rape, and massacre.
Consistency would require Trump to recognize the Armenian
massacres for what they were, Turkish-sponsored genocide! Every
year, U.S. presidents issue proclamations condemning the
massacres, but always avoid the word "genocide." President Ronald
Reagan was the only president to use the word.
Now is the time for the US government to join 48 U.S. states that
have done so already. Only Mississippi and Alabama have yet to do
    so!

Eurovision: Shooting of Armenia’s Eurovision postcard starts in Portugal – Photos

Public Radio of Armenia
17:44, 13 Apr 2018

The shooting of the Eurovision postcards has started in Portugal, press service of the Armenian Public TV informs.

This year the postcards aired ahead of every performance will present places of interest in Portugal, the country’s historical and cultural heritage.

“I’m very glad for the opportunity to be here before the start of the contest. The shooting takes only a day, but I have got to know much about the Portuguese culture,” Armenia’s entrant Sevak Khanagyan said.

“The idea of postcards is also very important, and I think viewers should like it. After the shooting is completed, I’ll leave for Amsterdam to participate in a pre-Eurovision concert,” Sevak said.

Sevak Khanagyan has been on a promo-tour since April 7. He has already performed in Moscow and Tel Aviv. He will next perform in Amsterdam this well and will leave for Madrid on April 21.

‘I wanna write my name into Arsenal’s history as a legend’ – Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the captain of the Armenian national football team and midfielder of London’s Arsenal, says he wants to become one of the legendary players of the Gunners.

Mkhitaryan spoke about his transfer from Mancheser United and other issues in an exlusive interview to FourFourTwo magazine’s May 2018 issue. The Armenian playmaker arrived from Manchester United in January as part of a swap deal with Alexis Sanchez.

Eager to make an early impression at the Emirates Stadium, the 29-year-old assisted three goals on his home debut against Everton as Arsene Wenger’s men obliterated the Toffees 5-1, FourFourTwo magazine reported.

The Armenian international reveals that he didn’t need to think twice about relocating to north London, because he was keen to be part of an attack-minded Gunners team.

“When I heard I could swap Man United for Arsenal, I said, ‘Yes, I want to do that’, I didn’t think twice. It’s important for me to play in an offensive team.

“I couldn’t have imagined a better start. I’d missed playing offensively. I joined Arsenal because Wenger wanted me, not because he wanted to replace Sanchez. We are different players and characters, with different abilities and skills, so I’ll try my best to do everything for the club”, Mkhitaryan told FourFourTwo.

Mkhitaryan’s first Arsenal goal helped see off Milan in the last 16 and set up a quarter-final with CSKA Moscow, and the Armenian says he is focused on adding more trophies to the Gunners’ cabinet.

“I want to write my name into Arsenal’s history and have my name as a legend here,” says the midfielder. “I want to score goals, make assists and win trophies to make the fans happy.”
