prononcera samedi.

PanARMENIAN.Net – ARF Dashnaktsutyun member voiced concerns over the
political forces’ focusing on possible election frauds rather than
their programs during campaign.

“ARF Dashnaktsutyun remains romantic, trying to win nation’s heart
with its election program,” Artyusha Shahbazyan said.

According to him, ARF Dashnaktsutyun doesn’t accept many of the
methods applied by other parties.

Head of the United Communist Party of Armenia Andranik Ghukasyan,
in turn, noted that his party takes efforts to “convey ideological
course to elections.”

“Many forces transform the political process into a show,” he
concluded.

OPPOSITIONIST: ARMENIAN PRESIDENT’S INTERFERENCE INTO SITUATION IN MASHTOTS PARK ELEMENT OF ‘ELECTORAL SHOW’

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s interference into the situation
with Mashtots Park was an element of “the electoral show” to improve
the rating of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia. Such statement
came from Gurgen Yeghiazaryan, ex-deputy head of the National Security
Service, a member of the oppositional Armenian National Congress,
Wednesday.

On May 1 President of Armenia, Leader of the ruling Republican Party
of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan visited the Mashtots Park and charged
Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan to immediately remove the boutiques
from the park.

“The authorities took advantage of the given situation to stage
a show wherein the activists fighting against ‘malign forces’ –
the municipality, clashing with the police, suffering difficulties
suddenly meet ‘a kind man’ who settles all the problems in their favor
and puts an end to that conflict. I do not want to underestimate
the role of those brave young people who had been fighting for the
last months for their rights and the rights of the citizens, but the
authorities have used even their fight to gain dividends in the eyes
of the population,” Yeghiazaryan said.

To recall, a group of young green activists were protesting day and
night at the park against construction of the boutiques. Special
brigades of the activists had repeatedly tried to dismantle the
boutiques, but the police stopped them.

MASHTOTS PARK: CIRCUMVENTING THE LAW FOR A PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO-OP

So, the president of Armenia visits Mashtots Park, walks around,
and then tells Yerevan Mayor Margaryan, “You know, this isn’t all
that pretty.”

In essence, it took Armenia’s president to make a final decision
regarding the kiosks in the park. There was no one else in government
able to go up against the interests of two oligarchs.

What does this say about the state of governance in Armenia?

If this state of affairs continues, the president will be called upon
to OK who gets to be employed as drivers and chauffeurs for state
agencies and their top honchos.

Maybe these same state officials can install some oxygen tanks on
the choked arteries of Yerevan where they can pull over and fill
their lungs with some clean air. They can hand over the keys to these
oxygen faucets to the president himself. Let the commander-in-chief
turn the spigots off and on.

Turns out that Mayor Margaryan didn’t have what it takes to take an
independent decision. (See: Yerevan’s Mayor Must Make a Decision That
“Goes Against the Grain”…At Least Once)

Why didn’t the mayor take my advice? It would have been so simple.

“Taron, one of your great achievements was to remove the stores
on Abovyan Street. You have also been correct when it came to the
private property issues involved. Yes, you cannot build legality
based on illegality. And it is not possible to create comfort with
illegal actions,” President Sargsyan told Mayor Margaryan during his
park visit.

“Dear Taron jan, you were right to say the kiosks would be taken
down in 2-3 years. But you’d agree with me that they don’t make a
pretty sight. The municipality has worked effectively, no doubt,
but the area isn’t pleasing to the eye. It would be best to find
another solution and dismantle all this,” the president added.

Of course, the president’s concerns for the park and its “looking good”
were all a sham, a convenient photo-op right before the elections.

During the past two months, the authorities had dismantled a number
of structures to defend those commercial stores – the police, judicial
system, the Yerevan Municipality – just with one purpose in mind, i.e.

so that the president could make his grand appearance in the park days
before the election and tell Taron “But you know, it ain’t pretty. It
would be good to find another solution and tear all this down.”

So now Mayor Margaryan has to come up with another solution to appease
the oligarchs, to compensate the owners of the stalls.

Commentary: Ataturk Unmasked

COMMENTARY: ATATURK UNMASKED
By Edmond Y. Azadian

Posted on May 1, 2012

A little-known historical event has a great significance in deciphering
and defining the racist ideology of today’s Republic of Turkey;
during World War II, Turkey was assisting Nazi Germany’s war efforts by
supplying raw material to its war machine, in appreciation of Turkey’s
support, Hitler allowed the transfer of the remains of Talaat Pasha,
assassinated in Berlin in 1921, his Turkish soul mate, back home
to Turkey, where a monument was erected in Istanbul’s Liberty Hill
(Hurriyet Tepe) as a shrine for all racist Turks to visit and venerate
one of the arch-criminals of the 20th century.

That monument is still standing, carrying with it symbolism for the
Turks and their victims.

When historians hold responsible and accountable the present Republic
of Turkey, as the successor state inheriting all the booty generated
by the murder of 1.5 million Armenians, they need also to refer to
the symbolism that Talaat Pasha’s monument represents.

Current leaders of Turkey cannot avoid responsibility because they have
inherited historic Armenian territory and the blood money resulting
from the murder of an unarmed nation.

Fortunately, some Turkish scholars, writers and journalists are
awakening to the fact that the present generation of Turks have on
their shoulders an awesome burden of history. One of those writers,
Ayse Hur, is revising the history she was taught at school in an
article published in Radikal, unmasking the racist policies of Ataturk,
the founder of the modern Republic of Turkey.

Historian Taner Akcam, through his thorough research, reveals that
many Ittihadist government functionaries who had executed Talaat’s
orders eventually joined the milli movement of Ataturk in laying the
foundations of the Republic of Turkey.

However, even Ataturk himself as a young man in the military had joined
the Union and Progress Party of Talaat and he also had a significant
role in the Young Turk revolution of 1908 which deposed the sultan.

His hands are not clean as a military man either, as he participated
in colonial wars to put down revolts against the harsh Ottoman rules
in Albania (1910) and the Balkans (1912-1913). The same colonial war
was waged against Armenians in Cilicia (1921) and Greeks in Smyrna
(1922) under the direct leadership of Ataturk.

Reading through scholarly or journalistic sources in the West, one is
left only with awe and respect vis-a-vis Ataturk as a military leader
and reformer. No mention, if any, is made of his racist policies and
atrocious war crimes. Reading BBC sources on the Internet, we come to
“admire” the father of modern-day Turkey.

The source presents Ataturk, the fatherly figure in the following way:
“He [Ataturk] launched a program of revolutionary social and political
reforms to modernize Turkey. These reforms included the emancipation of
women, the abolition of all Islamic institutions and the introduction
of Western legal codes, dress, calendar and alphabet, replacing the
Arabic script with a Latin one.”

To inspire pride in the Turks, he coined racist slogans, one of which
to this day, all schools, including the ones belonging to minorities,
have to prominently expose: “Proud should feel the person who claims to
be a Turk.” This kind of a slogan has fed feelings of racial supremacy
to the Turks, while inducing an inferiority complex and fear among
minority children.

Although he promulgated the Hat Law of 1925, forcing Turks to wear
Western-style hats to replace the fez, he could not change what
was under that hat, because he was not interested in what lay below
the surface.

Hur lists a long number of laws, decrees, regulations that define
Ataturk as a racist leader. Only a few examples will suffice to fully
understand the true reformist side of the father of the Turks.

Thus, speaking to a group of Turkish businessman in Adana, on March 16,
1923, Mustafa Kemal (aka Ataturk) said: “Finally this land returned to
its true owners. The Armenians and others have no rights here. These
fertile fields belong to true Turks.”

In a decree promulgated in June 1923, all Jews, Greeks and Armenians
were laid off from government and private institutions and their
travel within Anatolia was banned.

An April 3, 1924 law stripped the title of all Jewish, Greek and
Armenian lawyers, allowing the legal profession to be the purview of
the Turks exclusively.

A law was passed on August 1, 1926 to confiscate all minority
properties acquired before the Lausanne Treaty took effect (August
23, 1924).

Minister of Justice Mahmoud Essat Bozkurd announced on September 18,
1930, in the region of Eodimis: “My idea, my belief is that this land
itself is Turk. Those who are not real Turks and wish to live in this
country can only survive as servants or slaves.” And this is a Turkish
kind of justice from a minister of justice. This kind of treatment
reduced the minorities to the levels of rayas (slaves) practiced
during the ages of sultans. While suppressing Islamic symbols,
Kemalists enhanced the rights of Muslims and Turks over all minorities.

Therefore, it is not difficult to detect the red line, which runs
throughout Turkish history from the sultans to the Young Turks and then
to the Ataturk era, inherited intact by the modern Republic of Turkey.

These racist laws are still extant in Turkey. In fact, they have
been codified. What is penal code Article 301, supposedly defending
Turkishness, if not a muscle to silence dissidents and in the first
place any one who pronounces the word “genocide?” It is under that
penal code that authorities in Turkey have been persecuting and
prosecuting Orhan Pamuk, Ragip Zarakolu, Hrant Dink and other scholars
and journalists.

The reason these anachronistic trends and laws have survived is that
the army has taken upon itself to safeguard Kemalism, or the legacy
of Ataturk. Indeed, an unelected junta has assumed the perpetuation
of these laws.

The feeble voices of scholars and journalists would not have been
sufficient to transform Turkey from racism to civilization, were it
not for the pressure exerted by the European Union.

Once Turkey attains a respectable a level of civilization then the
gates of Europe may become more hospitable.

It is also our hope to deal with that kind of Turkey, because only
a fully civilized nation will be able to demonstrate the courage to
face its abominable history.

Mehmet Ala BIrand > We Are Surrendering Ourselves To ‘Genocide’

MEHMET ALİ BİRAND > WE ARE SURRENDERING OURSELVES TO ‘GENOCIDE’

.aspx?pageID=449&nID=19114&NewsCatID=405

[email protected]

Today is April 24. Again, as happens every year, the 70 million-person
population of Turkey will wonder what others are saying about the
Armenian issue. What will Washington say? Which country will accept
the Armenian genocide claims?

Days will pass in stress, and in the end, we will again forget
everything.

This process is like a Chinese torture. Especially as 2015 approaches,
the pressure will increase. Turkey, as it has done before, will react
harshly. It will utter threats, but they will remain ineffective.

Do you know why? It is because the Armenians have gotten a significant
part of the world to accept their claims of genocide.

Turkey’s counter-claims were both too late and too weak. We do not
need to go far to see this. Just last week, a 1,000-page book on the
topic was sent to my office.

It was compiled by the famous German journalist and writer Wolfgang
Gust. It includes all of the documentation of activities against the
Armenians that were filed in the German Foreign Ministry’s archives
in 1915 and 1916. These documents include not only those that were
sent by German diplomats or mission members in Turkey, but also views
and debates from within the German government on the same subject.

The book is in Turkish. Its English, German, Spanish and Portuguese
versions are already in print. Its message is, “Since the Turks won’t
do it, let us do it. They should see these documents and understand
the facts we have. They should be convinced that we are not acting
as their enemies, but trying to explain an incident.”

It has been translated into an extremely comprehensible and beautiful
Turkish by Belge Publishing House. Obviously it has taken years. It
is an extremely important and expensive study.

Without going into detail, if you read the book and look at the
documents, if you are a person who is introduced to the subject
through this book, then there is no way that you would not believe in
the genocide and justify the Armenians. Even if you are an expert on
the subject, or have researched what went on from the Turkish side,
again, you will be confused. You will have many questions.

In a letter included in the book, the head of the Zoryan Institute in
Canada, Greg Sarkissian, says true peace can only be achieved when
sources of information about nations’ pasts are shared and nations
can talk openly about the past. He also says that in this way mutual
understanding and dialogue will develop, instead of hate.

Now, I want to ask all Turkish officials: In the last 50 years, have
you done such a study? Have you researched international sources and —
however biased or one-sided it may be — have you been able to publish
such a book? What kind of a study have you made – moving outside our
own sources – that would convince the international public? Were you
limited to or satisfied with using only Turkish archives because you
could not find plausible documents or evidence?

Let us not deceive each other: If you can give correct answers to these
questions, then you will be able to clarify some very key facts for us.

I know you will remain silent.
