INFLATION IN ARMENIA TO PERSIST BECAUSE OF ABSENCE OF EFFECTIVE MARKET REGULATION: ECONOMIST

YEREVAN, December 14. /ARKA/. Inflationary pressures at Armenia’s
domestic market will persist as long until effective means of market
regulation are found and applied, a former finance minister, now deputy
rector of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, Edward Sandoyan,
said in an interview with “PostScript” program of A1 + Webcast.

According to him, the national currency is under strong pressure of
private remittances and investments that make up a significant portion
of incoming foreign currency. Sandoyan said Armenian authorities have
failed over 20 years of independence to shape an effective capital
market and apart from the banking system there are no other financial
institutions.

“In these circumstances, with no other financial institutions and with
high levels of poverty, which, according to official statistics,
is 35.7%, each dollar that enters Armenian economy, sparks new
inflationary pressure,” he explained.

Among the problems Sandoyan mentioned also the absence of effective
mechanisms to regulate the exchange rate.

According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, in 2011
November inflation rose by 4.8% year-on-year, driven primarily by a
6.4% rise of prices of foods, including alcoholic beverages and by 3.8%
rise of industrial goods prices.

Landmark U.S. House Resolution Presses Turkey To Return Stolen Chris

LANDMARK U.S. HOUSE RESOLUTION PRESSES TURKEY TO RETURN STOLEN CHRISTIAN CHURCHES

The U.S. House of Representatives adopted a landmark religious freedom
measure, H.Res.306, calling upon Turkey to return the Christian church
properties it stole through genocide, and to end its repression of
the surviving members of the vast Christian civilizations that once
represented a majority in the territory of the present-day Republic
of Turkey, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

The measure, spearheaded by Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) and Howard Berman
(D-CA) was scheduled for House consideration by House Majority Leader
Eric Cantor, with the support of Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL)
and Ranking Member Berman, of the Foreign Affairs Committee. House
Members speaking in support of the measure included Representatives
Royce, Berman, Congressional Armenian Genocide Resolution lead
cosponsor Adam Schiff (D-CA), Congressional Armenian Caucus Co-Chair
Frank Pallone (D-NJ), Brad Sherman (D-CA) and Eliot Engel (D-NY).
Congressional Turkey Caucus Co-Chair Ed Whitfield (R-KY) was alone
in speaking out against the resolution. The measure was adopted by
voice vote.

“Despite Prime Minister Erdogan’s recent claims of progress on
religious freedom, Turkey’s Christian communities continue to face
severe discrimination,” explained Congressman Royce. “Today, the U.S.
House of Representatives considered and adopted my legislation, which
calls upon the government of Turkey to end religious discrimination,
allow religious prayer and education, and return stolen church
property. The United States has a strong interest in promoting
religious freedom abroad.”

Rep. Berman concurred, noting that, “This important resolution calls
attention to Turkey’s disturbing, persistent failure to respect the
ancient Christian heritage of Anatolia and to treat its Christian
communities as free and equal citizens. Turkey should take immediate
steps to restore all confiscated church property and allow full freedom
of worship and religious education for all Christian communities.”

In July, Reps. Royce and Berman were joined by Rep. David Cicilline
(D-RI) in spearheading House Foreign Affairs Committee consideration
of the “Return of Churches” amendment to the State Department
Authorization Bill. Their amendment was overwhelmingly adopted by a
vote of 43 to 1.

“The passage of House Resolution 306 is a great victory for religious
freedom around the world, and is a turning point in the Armenian
people’s fight for religious freedom. Respect for the full exercise
of our civil rights is really central to who we are as Americans and
central to the values and ideals that we promote all over the world.
My home state of Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams on
the principles of religious liberty and freedom and I am proud to
co-sponsor the Resolution in that spirit,” said Congressman David
Cicilline.

The text of H.Res.306 adopted today is the same as the abridged
version adopted at the committee level.

“Today’s vote – over opposition from Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep
Erdogan and, sadly, even our own American President’s Administration, –
represents a powerful victory for religious freedom, and also reflects
the growing American and international consensus that Turkey must –
starting with the return of thousands of stolen Christian churches
properties and holy sites – accept its responsibilities for the full
moral and material implications of a truthful and just resolution of
the Armenian Genocide,” said ANCA Chairman Ken Hachikian.

ANKARA: Turkey Urges France On ‘Genocide Penalty’

TURKEY URGES FRANCE ON ‘GENOCIDE PENALTY’

A fresh legislative attempt in the French Parliament aiming at
punishing those who refuse to recognize 1915 incidents as genocide
caused Turkey’s reaction against France whose bilateral ties recently
showed improvement.

“At a moment when Turkey and France have entered into a process
in which they could increase their cooperation at bilateral and
international level, we hope no unrecoverable steps will be taken,”
the Foreign Ministry said in a statement over the weekend.

Numerous attempts to penalize the denial of the Armenian genocide
claims have failed in France since the early 2000s after the country
had officially recognized the 1915 incidents as genocide. As
the presidential elections loom in France, both the ruling and
oppositional parties revisit these efforts to gain the support of
Armenian diaspora in France. A draft law in this has been approved
in a French parliamentary commission Dec. 7.

“The French administration is well aware of how sensitive this issue
is to us,” said the Foreign Ministry statement. The statement also
called on France to contribute to the solution of this problem between
Turkey and France through dialogue.

Gurdjieff Folk Instruments, Alla Radice Dell’ispirazione

GURDJIEFF FOLK INSTRUMENTS, ALLA RADICE DELL’ISPIRAZIONE

in oriente (Mosca, Istanbul) e poi in occidente (Parigi, Stati uniti)
musicale, Robert Fripp e Franco Battiato.

composizioni a quattro mani.

Meetings with Remarkable Men’, in cui Rosenthal conduce la National
Philarmonic Orchestra e gli Ambrosian Singers of London.

detto duduk; l’oud, l’immancabile liuto arabo; altri cordofoni come
il turco saz, l’afghano tar e il persiano kamanche; arpe orizzontali
quali il kanun e il santur; percussioni varie e assortite, come tombak,
dap, dhol.
