"The Armenian cinematography is flourishing. Interest to cinema has
gone up," Harutiun Khachatryan, founding director of Golden Apricot
film festival, said. In the past no films were shot without state
sponsorship whereas now there are foundations which fund films,
he said.

Khachatryan said Berlin World Foundation has allocated good money
for the Armenian cinematography. In his words, many producers are
interested in Armenian films. "The Armenian cinematography is going
to change. Many good films are produced in studios," he said.

State Exam Revealed Average Level Of Knowledge

STATE EXAM REVEALED AVERAGE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE

The results of the integrated state exam are known. It was held in
Karabakh for the first time. The papers were checked in Armenia. The
minister of education Kamo Atayan said average marks prevail. Only
one student got 19.

The students who took the A+B test (the integrated state exam) can
go to the university, the results of the other students who took the
A test will go to their certificate.

"Frankly speaking, I could not understand the structure of this test,"
said a student from Stepanakert who had taken the A+B exam.

"We had taken an experimental exam but the tasks were from the
reference book we used to get ready for the test. Now the tasks were
different. I wouldn’t say it was difficult, especially that we could
help one another. There were 75 questions, I got 45 points in total,
12.5 for the university. It’s not clear for me how they calculate
this. But I’m glad we’ll not have to take the same test twice."

Vice-President Of OMX Group Stated The Necessity Of A "Revolution" O

VICE-PRESIDENT OF OMX GROUP STATED THE NECESSITY OF A "REVOLUTION" ON THE ARMENIAN CAPITAL MARKET

Mediamax News Agency, Armenia
June 6 2007

Yerevan, June 6 /Mediamax/. Senior Vice-President of the Swedish
OMX Group Henri Bergstrom stated in Yerevan today the necessity of a
"revolution" on the Armenian market of capital.

Mediamax reports that the OMX Vice-President said this, speaking
during the "Development Prospects of Armenian Market of Capital"
round-table, organized by the Central Bank. The representatives of
Armenian business participated in the round-table.

According to Henri Bergstrom, at present, the Armenian market of
capital is in reanimation conditions, "when it is difficult to breathe
and feed, and the heart is in bad condition". However, he stressed,
"there is will and readiness of the participants of the market to
assist the process of reanimation".

OMX Group Vice-President noted that the investors are offered a
limited range of services on the Armenian market of capital.

According to him, one should start from solving the problems in
the sphere of infrastructures, especially in the payment-accounting
system. Henri Bergstrom noted that the point is the establishment of
necessary condition for free entrance of the investors in the Armenian
market of capital, rather than the implementation of the system.

"We held discussions with the representatives of well-known Armenian
companies, which expressed preliminary interest concerning the
initial placement of securities on the Armenian Stock Exchange",
OMX Vice-President noted.

According to the assessment of Bergstrom, there are efficient steps
needed to increase the interest towards the capital market of the
country. One of such levers, according to him, may become the provision
of tax benefits to companies, which express readiness to place their
shares on the Stock Exchange.

The OMX Vice-President stated that another condition for the
development of the market of capital may become the pension reforms.

He noted that there are quite a few concrete examples in the world,
evidencing that the basic driving force for the development of the
market of capital is the pension system.

"We intend to implement in the Armenian market of capital the
"quality mark" of OMX, use the best European practice here", Henri
Bergstrom stressed.

According to the forecasts of the OMX Vice-President, in 10 years
"we will be dealing with an efficiently functioning Armenian market
of capital".

The Chairman of the Armenian Central Bank Tigran Sarkisian stated the
importance of holding the round-table, noting that these were the
first public discussion after signing the memorandum between OMX,
the government and the Central Bank of Armenia, according to which
OMX purchases the Armenian Stock Exchange and the Central Depository.

On May 25, the OMX Group announced its merger with the NASDAQ
Company. The new Company will be named NASDAQ OMX Group.

The Faces Of Iraqis Are Hard To Find

THE FACES OF IRAQIS ARE HARD TO FIND
By Kate Rogers Gessert

The Register-Guard, OR
June 7 2007

Last month in Iraq, 126 U.S. soldiers, five soldiers from Great Britain
and other countries, and about 2,770 Iraqi civilians were killed,
according to figures collected by Iraq Body Count. In newspapers and
on Web sites, we read about American casualties, both the dead and the
wounded – Americans such as Sgt. Will Glass, the wounded young soldier
whose story appeared in The Register-Guard on Memorial Day weekend.

But it is difficult to find news stories that focus on individual Iraqi
casualties. Personal details drop out when only a few reporters are
working on the dangerous streets of Iraq, many Iraqis are afraid to
talk with reporters, and large-scale carnage is occurring. For example,
although 652 Iraqi civilians were killed in the first week of May,
news reports included the names of just 14, according to Iraq Body
Count records (www .iraqbodycount.org).

Yet only by hearing about the lives and deaths of people who are dying,
by seeing the faces of Iraqis as well as Americans, can we begin to
really understand what is happening.

During the past month, I’ve read both The Register-Guard and the
Internet sites of a broad range of international media, searching for
news of Iraqi civilian casualties of war. I learned two things. Even
on the Internet, there is little except casualty counts. I had to
dig hard to find anything.

And in The Register-Guard, there is more than I realized, though it
is easy to overlook. Most days, on page 2 of the main news section,
there are composite articles about Iraq. Although these articles
focus on political and military developments and general descriptions
of the preceding day’s violence, they sometimes include, whether in
paragraph seven or 12, glimpses of Iraqi civilians who have died.

You might remember Sami Hussein (Register-Guard, May 23) who lost her
5-year-old son in a Baghdad market bombing, or Saif Fakhry, a TV news
cameraman, killed while he walked to the mosque with his pregnant wife
(Register-Guard, June 1).

Looking at international media, I’ve found more glimpses to add to
the shadowy picture of Iraqi civilian casualties of May 2007.

~U May 1: Nejim Mohammed Hussein, a Kirkuk blacksmith, refused to
cooperate with militants. They burned him alive in his car in front
of his blacksmith’s shop (Agence France Presse).

~U May 7: Jaafar al-Anbaki and his wife taught in the same elementary
school in Diyala province. Gunmen stormed the school and executed
the two teachers in front of their students and colleagues (Voices
of Iraq).

~U May 7: A roadside bomb exploded beside a U.S. patrol in Baghdad.

The soldiers started firing, and their bullets pierced the walls of a
nearby house and killed Zaruhi Karabet, a 79-year-old Armenian Iraqi
woman who lived inside (Karabakh Open).

~U May 8: According to Iraqi security sources, shots were fired at a
U.S. helicopter in al-Nada village in Diyala province, and soldiers
in the helicopter returned fire, hitting Al-Saada elementary school.

Witnesses said six children were killed and six others wounded (Radio
Free Europe/Radio Liberty).

~U May 23: Samarra is a city of 300,000 where the Iraqi government
and the U.S. military have imposed a blockade since May 6, when a
suicide bomber killed a dozen police officers. No vehicles are allowed
into the city; it is difficult for residents to find food, water and
medical supplies. According to a doctor in Samarra’s largest hospital,
at least 10 people, including seven babies, have died because of a
lack of power for incubators and other medical equipment. Doctors for
Iraq has called for an end to the blockade, which it calls "collective
punishment" (Inter Press Service).

~U May 27: Khalil al-Zahawi, known as Iraq’s "sheikh of calligraphers,"
trained practitioners throughout the Middle East in classical Arabic
calligraphy. Gunmen pulled him from his car outside his Baghdad house
and shot him (BBC).

~U May 30: Thirty-one-year-old Abdul Rahman al-Isawi lived with his
family in Amiriyat-al-Fallujah and worked as a freelance reporter.

Late at night, "gunmen entered his house and dragged him with his
father and brother to a nearby orchard, where they shot them," said
Mohammed Hussein, al-Isawi’s cousin. Five other family members also
died at the hands of the gunmen. Two other Iraqi journalists also
were killed: in Kirkuk, Mahmoud Hakim Mustafa, editor of Hawadith
newspaper, and in Amara, Nazar Abdul Wahid, a 38-year-old father of
three who was on his way to a journalism workshop (Reuters).

These are 33 Iraqi civilians among the 2,770 who died last month. May
they all rest in peace.

The rector of Mesrop Mashtots University Donara Gabrielyan became
member of the European Club of Rectors. The club was set up in Oxford
in 2005.

Yesterday Donara Gabrielyan told this in a news conference she held
after her visit to Bulgaria. The rector of the university took part in
the forum on academic cooperation in Varna held by the Club of Rectors,
the European Business Assembly and the Open University of Varna.

the students of Mesrop Mashtots University to study in European
universities and colleges. "Those who wish to visit us, we will
introduce our history, our sights to them," said Donara Gabrielyan. She
also emphasized that a department of tourism will be set up in the
university. The rector says the university was awarded the medal for
European Integration, which they will get in March in Malta.

Respondent Side Gives Explanations On Case Challenging The Results O

RESPONDENT SIDE GIVES EXPLANATIONS ON CASE CHALLENGING THE RESULTS OF NA ELECTIONS IN PROPORTIONAL SYSTEM

Noyan Tapan
Jun 04 2007

YEREVAN, JUNE 4, NOYAN TAPAN. RA Central Electoral Commission (CEC)
rejects the challenges of the opposition political forces which
question NA elections held in proportional system. The opinion of
applicants is subjective, and CEC acted totally in its competence. This
was declared on June 4 by Garegin Azarian, RA CEC Chairman, in his
explanations at RA Constitutional Court hearing the case on the
applications of Hanrapetutiun ("Republic"), Nor Zhamanakner ("New
Times"), Orinac Yerkir ("Country of Law") parties and Impeachment
alliance. In his words, though there were some unessential flaws,
CEC and inferior electoral commissions preserved the demands of
Electoral Code.

In response to one of the arguments of the applicants, G. Azarian
mentioned that the post of Defence Minister is a contemplative one
and the minister is entitled by law to head a party. Answering to
the criticism on allegedly unequal covering of electoral campaigns of
political forces, participating in the elections, G. Azarian mentioned
that the parties themselves did not inform the media or informed late
about their pre-election meetings. In CEC Chairman’s words, government
bodies have never refused to dispose areas to political forces for
their pre-election campaigns. G. Azarian also denied the warning
signal on a concert with lottery organized by Bargavach Hajastan
party. G. Azarian appealed not to identify Bargavach Hayastan with
G. Tsarukian’s fund, as it was the latter that carried out charitable
actions and mainly before the beginning of the electoral campaign.

RA Police representative, First Deputy Chief of Police Ararat
Mahtesian, who was a co-responsent, noted that there was no serious
argument from the applicants on the electoral rolls being incomplete,
which could influence the election results. And moreover, in the
words of Deputy Chief of Police, for the first time the number of
inaccuracies was very small.

The next co-responspondent, Deputy Chief Prosecutor Gevorg Danielian
who was Representative of Prosecutor’s Office mentioned that there had
been serious signals on this or that violation of electoral process
from CEC.

Prosecutor’s office has examined 80 reports, 15 criminal cases
were sued.

As for the opposition’s allegation on the lack of acceess to radio
and TV for thier electoral campaigns, co-responsible Grigor Amalian,
Head of Television and Radio National Commission, mentioned that
parties have used 80% of the free broadcasting time: 60 hours out of
75. Hanrapetutiun party, in particular, used only 7 minutes and 50
seconds of 2 hours of free broadcasting time by Public Radio.

Co-respondent David Harutiunian, Minister of Justice, mentioned in
his explanations that RPA, PAP and ARFD were registered on quite
legal basis.

PanARMENIAN.Net
04.06.2007 18:44 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Hearings on the murder of Turkish Armenian editor
Hrant Dink will start July 2, 2007.

The court sessions will be held behind closed doors.

Publication of any information is barred.

Journalists will be deprived of the possibility to cover the

Hrant Dink, the editor of the Turkish-Armenian "Agos" weekly newspaper,

murderous assault. The Istanbul prosecutor is seeking life imprisonment
for both Tuncel and Hayal, who also face charges of being a senior
member of an armed terrorist group. Since Ogun Samast has not reached
the age of 18, he could face up to 24 years behind bars for Dink’s
murder. The indictment tabled by the prosecutor also called for
various terms of imprisonment for Mustafa Ozturk, Tuncay Uzundal,

COAF Expands its Youth Program

Two New Youth Clubs are Formed in Armavir District

Community of Shenik, Armavir District, Armenia, June 4, 2007 ¾ Today,
the Children of Armenia Fund (COAF), in partnership with the Center for
Agribusiness and Rural Development (CARD), formed two new youth clubs in
the villages of Shenik and Karakert. These two clubs join the clubs of
Lernagog and Argina, which were part of the pilot project launched a
year ago. The huge success of the pilot project and resulting
achievements of the club members led the COAF-CARD partnership to expand
this joint project to two more of the Model Cluster villages. Just as
in the forerunner pilot projects, these clubs will be dedicated to
instilling in adolescent girls and boys a sense of responsibility and
caretaking of their sheep.

At today’s event, the twenty 12-13 year-old adolescent boys and girls
gathered in their respective school yards and cheered the sponsors as
they arrived with the sheep. In turn, the Shenik Mayor, Mr. Koryun
Minasyan, welcomed the guests and hailed the project as an important
initiative for the individual development of the youth. COAF and CARD
representatives also addressed the participating adolescents and their
parents. Subsequently, the selected girls and boys received two sheep
each together with a care package taking their first steps toward
becoming full-fledged farmers in the future.

The project aims at teaching youngsters how to take responsibility for
taking care of the sheep ¾ caring, feeding, and preventing diseases.
The broader objective is to develop livestock farming in the region.
Adolescents from disadvantaged, needy, or single parent families are
selected to join the club provided they satisfy a set of pre-established
criteria, including their personal level of interest in livestock
farming and the existence of a suitable sheep shed adjacent to the
family home. Under the close watch and direction of an expert
veterinarian, the youngsters will gain knowledge of animal science and
take daily notes on their sheep. Khatutik NGO will be responsible for
organizing the trainings and for providing educational materials and
hygienic supplies to the club members.

This project is expected to contribute to the economic development of
the Model Cluster villages. Last year’s outcomes have demonstrated full
compliance with established standards in animal care and, in most cases,
club members have exceeded the target performance results.

Children of Armenia Fund was founded in 2000 with the aim to reduce
poverty through the revitalization of rural Armenia and the realization
of projects that are instrumental for the revival of communities. With
the introduction of its novel approach to clustering in February 2006,
COAF is currently implementing the Model Cluster working in six villages
in Baghramyan Region of Armavir District. The key components of COAF’s
Model Cluster project comprise Infrastructure and Economic Development
Programs, and Community Development including Health, Social and
Educational Programs. Since early 2006, besides its Model Village
Karakert, COAF is also working in Myasnikyan, Shenik, Dalarik, Lernagog
and Argina.

The Armenian Rural Youth Development Program, initiated by the Center
for Agribusiness and Rural Development, is a voluntary non formal
educational program that supplements formal school education. It is
modeled after the US 4-H Program. The program is helping young people
gain skills needed to become responsible, self-directing, productive and
contributing members of society. The Extension Youth Development Program
provides real experiences and an opportunity for youth to gain life
skills, project development and implementation skills, basic
agricultural knowledge in order to be engaged in community development
activities.
