Asbarez: AYF Camp 2019 Brings Diasporan Armenians Together

As the last bus leaves Week H, the dust finally settles and, just like that, another eight amazing weeks of AYF Camp come to an end. With over 1,000 campers and staff, AYF Camp was bustling all summer with immense Armenian spirit, fun Red-Blue-Orange activities and a variety of educationals. “Camp is my home away from home. It’s where people come together. It’s amazing how people who were once strangers to me are now some of my closest friends,” said Natalie Moumdjian (13) from Seal Beach, CA.

What makes AYF Camp so special is its vast global appeal, which keeps growing year after year. In 2019, there were campers and staff from all over the world, including China, France, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, and the United Kingdom. “Being a counselor has given me the privilege to lead and guide the youth of the Armenian community. It is inspiring to see the campers creativity and uniqueness thrive through the activities and experiences made at AYF camp. This opportunity creates lifetime friendships and bonds between campers and counselors. The campers are the reason I look forward to attending every year,” said Deanna Jabourian (Counselor, Week H).

The pride and success of AYF Camp has always been, and will continue to be, the joint effort of all its volunteers and supporting community. AYF Camp is fortunate to have had amazing directors in the past who have paved the way and allowed for the addition of 7 new directors in the 2019 camp season – many of whom are female. For Lori Tashdjian, a first-time director (Week B) and AYF Camp Management Board member, “The spirit of AYF Camp never changes and continues to enrich the lives of Armenian youth. It’s wonderfully fulfilling to watch camp thrive year after year. It is a true testament to our program.” The counselors, under the guidance of these directors, ensured that all campers had a great summer focusing on building friendships, learning about Armenian culture, and enjoying the great outdoors.

The summer was filled with outdoor activities, including canoeing, archery, and Red-Blue-Orange team competitions, as well as educationals and the always-competitive weekly song competition. AYF Camp is truly grateful to all the volunteer educational speakers who came up throughout the summer to ensure that campers went home with more knowledge about the Armenian Nation, our rich culture, and beautiful history. This year, campers were fortunate to partake in a number of new educationals, including Armenian Genealogy, Artsakh, and Leadership. For instance, AYF Camp was thrilled to have two representatives, Manuk Avedikyan and Sedda Antekelian, from the USC Shoah Foundation representing the work that they do with the testimony of Genocide survivors, both of whom “were moved to see the positive impact testimony-based education had on the campers and the genuine appreciation they felt to have the opportunity to watch and listen to Armenian Genocide survivors as well as survivors of the Holocaust and the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.”

As the 2019 Summer Camp season has come to a close, AYF Camp would like to thank all of the volunteers, campers and community for their continued support in making this summer such a success and hopes to see everyone back next year.

Since 1977, AYF Camp has offered a genuinely rewarding experience, by serving as a place for Armenian youth to make new friends and memories for a lifetime. AYF Camp is the largest and oldest summer camp program in the Western United States focusing on Armenian culture and heritage. For more information, and sign up for our newsletter to receive news and updates on programs and events, visit our website.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 17, ARMENPRESS. “Hayastani Hanrapetutyun” newspaper writes, “Prime Minister of Armenia NIkol Pashinyan will pay a working visit to the USA on September 21. He is scheduled to hold a number of meetings with the Armenian community and business circle, as well as a number of bilateral meetings with foreign partners in the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.

“Hayastani Hanrapetutyun” newspaper talked with member of “My step” parliamentary faction Sos Avetisyan about the agenda of the PM’s visit to the USA.  According to him, among the priorities of the authorities of Armenia is carrying out the economic revolution and in that context meeting with the U.S.-Armenian community is quite reasonable. “For years different corrupt deals were made in Armenia as a result of which an atmosphere of distrust has been established towards Armenia. Meeting with those people personally and explaining them that from now on everything is normal in Armenia will be a very right step, particularly during this transitional period”, he said.

Armenians flock to Akhtamar for annual religious service

Hundreds of Armenians flocked to the Surb Khach (Holy Cross) Armenian Church on Akhtamar Island in Lake Van for the annual religious service.

After a four-year break, the religious service resumed last year. The services were suspended due to security concerns.

The church was built between 915 and 921 A.D. by architect Bishop Manuel under the sponsorship of Gagik I Artsruni of the Kingdom of Vaspurakan.

The church was abandoned after theArmenian Genocide of 1915. The building’s restoration began in 2005 and opened as a museum two years later.

Believed to have been constructed to house a piece of the “True Cross,” which was used in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the church was restored in 2005 and opened in 2007. The church is usually open to visitors as a museum.

Film: Film about Armenian revolution to premiere at Toronto Film Festival

PanArmenian, Armenia
Aug 28 2019

PanARMENIAN.Net“I am not alone” — a full-access feature documentary about Armenia‘s miraculous 2018 velvet revolution — will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Directed by filmmaker Garin Hovannisian, the chronicle of the 2018 Armenian revolution combines front-line reportage with new interviews that describe incidents the cameras could not capture. ‘

“Hugely informative, briskly paced, and offering a laudable balance of perspectives, I Am Not Alone is a feat of nonfiction storytelling and a must-see for anyone eager to make sense of recent history,” the description posted on TIFF’s website reveals.

“I Am Not Alone extracts fascinating commentaries from an array of individuals on both sides, including Pashinyan and, most surprisingly, [former President and PM] Sargsyan. Defying one interview subject’s characterization of Armenians as a people “who had forgotten how to dream,” the film ably demonstrates that fundamental change brought about by the people can be made manifest.”

The Armenian Prime Minister and former opposition lawmaker Nikol Pashinyan led massive demonstrations in April-May 2018 to oust former authorities.

After a civil disobedience campaign that lasted several weeks, the then Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan resigned, which led to the dissolution of the parliament, snap elections and the subsequent election of Pashinyan as the country’s new Prime Minister.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 21, ARMENPRESS. A Yerevan court denied to release a jailed gunman who was among the perpetrators of the 2016 police station ambush in the Armenian capital.

Smbat Barseghyan, one of the two suspects who are jailed amid the ongoing trial, was denied to be released on bail. The other jailed suspect is Armen Bilyan. Both are charged with gunning down the 3 police officers during the events which became known as the 2016 Yerevan hostage crisis.

Judge Mesrop Makyan adjourned the trial until August 28th.

In the summer of 2016, a group of 10 men identifying themselves as Sasna Tsrer (Daredevils of Sassoun) stormed a police station and took hostages, demanding the resignation of the then-government and the release of political prisoners.

The group subsequently surrendered and the court proceedings are underway since then. 8 suspects have been later released on bail amid the trial.

The Sasna Tsrer group went on to transform into a political party and unsuccessfully ran for parliament in 2018.

Azerbaijani press: MFA: Armenia’s attempts to present “elections” in Azerbaijan’s occupied territories as indicator of democracy do not stand up to criticism

22 August 2019 22:26 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Aug. 22

Trend:

Armenia, instead of trying to create a false appearance of “exporting democracy” in Karabakh, should think about the pressing problems of its own citizens, Spokesperson of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Leyla Abdullayeva told Trend.

She was commenting on the Armenian media reports that on August 22 the Armenian government “for the first time allocated funds to foreign NGOs to monitor the elections in unrecognized Karabakh”.

“Regarding this information of the Armenian media, it should be recalled that Armenia, which has occupied the territories of Azerbaijan, is not the first time organizing various kinds of shows there, which it calls “elections” or “referendum”. According to their results, the entire international community invariably declares its principled position regarding support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, non-recognition of the illegal regime, as well as any “elections” held by it”, she said.

Abdullayeva noted that allocating funds for monitoring the “elections” in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, the Armenian government once again acknowledges its effective control over the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the surrounding districts, thus confirming the relevant conclusion of the ECHR contained in its 2015 judgement in the case of “Chiragov and Others v. Armenia”.

“And finally, attempts to present the so-called “local government elections” in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan as an indicator of democracy do not stand up to criticism. The entire international community condemns the acts of mass destruction of the Azerbaijani population, ethnic cleansing and violation of the fundamental rights of hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons. Armenia, which is responsible for all these international torts, can in no way claim the status of an exporter of democracy”, Abdullayeva said.

She noted that the Armenian government, instead of hopeless attempts to create a false appearance of “exporting democracy” to Karabakh occupied by it, should think about the urgent problems of their own citizens.

“In addition, its actions should not run counter to the logic of advancing the negotiation process to resolve the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and serve to preserve the status quo based on the illegal occupation of internationally recognized territories of Azerbaijan,” she added.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

President Sarkissian Joins Sevan Startup Summit via Skype

President Armen Sarkissian spoke to audience members of the Sevan Startup Summit 2019 via skype

YEREVAN—President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian joined the participants of the Sevan Startup Summit 2019 via skype yesterday evening. Sarkissian spoke to attendees, inquired about the process of the Summit, and answered audience questions, the President’s Office told Armenpress.

“This is a wonderful initiative, and I want to thank all those who started this. I believe this initiative will very successful. It’s especially important for Armenia, because, Armenia, as I see it in the future, should have a strong presence in the field of high and new technologies, and should be a startup country. Maybe, one day, we will have a chance to declare Armenia the capital of the world’s startup,” stated President Sarkissian. “Startup is one of the institutes that unites the youth which is not only valuable, but important, as well.”

While speaking about opportunities to further develop startups, and their conditions, Sarkissian highlighted the necessity of high-quality education. “In order to include Armenia in the list of the leading countries, several conditions are required—such as quality of education. High-quality education should be offered to everyone, from the center of Yerevan up to bordering villages. The main mission of each teacher is to find talents, and startups will help us in finding individuals with talent,” noted Sarkissian.

The next key factor, according to the President, is the presence of leading international companies in Armenia, which will create an environment for the development of startups. “We cannot properly create a startup without using new science and technological infrastructures. That’s why we are working with a number of major companies, such as IBM, Google, Leonardo, to ensure their presence in Armenia. If major international companies operate in Armenia, they will give a special developmental quality,” the President said.

The next important factor is the mutual connection with the world. “We are naturally connected with the world, as Armenians live everywhere. Many talented Armenians work in California, the Silicon Valley,” he noted. “Therefore, it’s important to create a hub between all, and not only between Armenians. The 21st century will belong to individuals who have the ambition and courage to take on a challenge and present new ideas.”

President Sarkissian emphasized that Armenia is a promising place for talented youth. “Young talents are always in search for a challenging environment, and that environment is the technological space of the 21st century. Thus, Armenia must provide this kind of space,” he said.

Sarkissian expressed readiness to assist the Summit. “I am with you. I am a member of your startup community, ready to help you create a new path to work with the new generation. You are young, everything is ahead of you, but the world is moving quite rapidly. Thus, you must also be swift.”

The Sevan Startup Summit is attended by 120 startup teams from Armenia and 45 countries, as well as over 1,000 entrepreneurs from different parts of the world. The summit aims at promoting innovative ideas, as well as establishing communication between the business representatives.
