Giragosian: Iran’s Relations With Azerbaijan More Important

GIRAGOSIAN: IRAN’S RELATIONS WITH AZERBAIJAN MORE IMPORTANT

"It is symbolic that right now the president of Iran is visiting
Azerbaijan, while their vice-president is in Yerevan," stated Richard
Giragosian, head of the Washington bureau of Caucasian and Central
Asian issues, while meeting with journalists at the "Friday" club. He
added that while the Iranian president is in Baku discussing energy
and transit issues, the vice-president is in Yerevan talking about
sports, meaning, in his opinion, that Armenia remains isolated from
advancements in the region.

To the question of if it is possible to conclude from all this
that Iran-Azerbaijan relations are more important , he said that
Armenia-Iran relations are in general more secure and stable than
Iran-Azerbaijan relations, but that "The recent Iranian visit to Baku
means that Armenia is placing more importance on relations with Russia,
considering it dangerous to deepen relations with Iran."

According to Giragosian, Azerbaijan is more important to Iran than
Armenia, from the point of view that the Iranians have more areas
to work together with Azerbaijan concerning the benefits they can
receive from the region’s energy networks.

Consul General of the Republic of Armenia Visits Dodger Stadium for the
first time

LOS ANGELES, CA- California Trade Office (CATO)/Foundation for Economic
Development (FED) and Armenian National Committee – Western Region (ANC-WR)
representatives accompanied Armen Liloyan, Consul General of the Republic of
Armenia to an evening game at Dodger Stadium on July 16, 2007. In
attendance were CATO International Trade Specialist, Johnny Nalbandian, and
Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee-Western Region,
Antranig Kzirian. Liloyan’s nine year old son, Rouben, also joined them for
his first ever baseball game.

The division leading Los Angeles Dodgers took on the Philadelphia Phillies.
The stadium was flooded with Dodger fans including Nalbandian, while
Kzirian, a native Philadelphian and avid Phillies fan, rooted for his home
team.

Perhaps the most excited fan in the stadium was Liloyan’s son, Rouben, who
instantly fell in love with the sport. He was unfamiliar with the game but
soon learned the rules and quickly became a fan. "When I go back to Armenia
I’m going to teach my friends how to play baseball," he remarked.

"I was pretty impressed with the Consul General’s knowledge of the game,"
said Nalbandian, "I have been coming to this stadium since the day it was
built, yet he brought up statistics about the team that I did not even
know."

During the game Nalbandian and Liloyan discussed the relationship between
companies promoting trade in the Caucuses, Western Asia, and Eastern Europe
and possibly taking baseball to that part of the world. "We have all heard
of the Cactus League. Here comes the Caucus League," said Kzirian. The
evening’s event was a casual occasion to build on the growing relationship
between CATO/FED and the Armenian Consul General’s office.

CATO/FED, the Armenian General Consulate and the Armenian American Chamber
of Commerce have been working closely together and recently established a
joint task force including CATO’s International Trade Specialist, Johnny
Nalbandian, FED board member, Al Cabraloff, Vice-Consul of the Consulate
General of Republic of Armenia, Sahak Sargsyan, and director of the Armenian
American Chamber of Commerce, Nicholas Hacopian. The task force was
developed to explore ways in which the organizations may collaborate on
initiatives of common interest, including a prospective trade event.

"The highlight of my evening was seeing Rouben Liloyan’s face light up when
we walked into the stadium because it reminded me of my childhood," noted
Nalbandian. "Dodger Stadium has such a fun atmosphere for people of all
ages and backgrounds, so it was nice to be able to enjoy the game and also
discuss some business in a relaxed environment." Nalbandian also mentioned,
"since Los Angeles and Yerevan are now sister cities, can you imagine the
Dodgers playing in Yerevan one day soon?"

Displaced Residents Determined To Demand Government’s Resignation

DISPLACED RESIDENTS DETERMINED TO DEMAND GOVERNMENT’S RESIGNATION

Residents of Northern Avenues, Yeznik Koghbatsi Street and owners
of Dalma Gardens gathered in front of Yerevan municipality today
demanding from Mayor Yervand Zakharyan to accept them and give an
answer on the progression of their problem. Ownership Rights Protection
NGO Chairman Vachagan Hakobyan told Panorama.am they have met Prime
Minister Serzh Sargsyan several times. The prime has promised that
the size of the monetary compensation made to the residents striped
of their houses will be "reconsidered according to the real market
price." The displaced residents made a promise themselves not to
rally in streets. "We kept to our word but the government and the
municipality did not keep to their own," resented Hakobyan also saying
"this is the fourth year now that people are illegally thrown out
from their houses having paid pence without being redeemed for their
ownership rights."

In Hakobyan’s words, the prime minister was asked to set up a
government committee in order to discuss and find a solution to the
problem, however, Sargsyan "has signed the paper to the assignment
of the mayor and he has not done anything, again."

Asked what their next step will be in case Yerevan mayor does not
accept them, Hakobyan answered they are going to bring all the people,
whose rights have been violated in the course of the recent few years,
out to streets and demand resignation of the government. "We are full
of determination and we will go until the end," Hakobyan finished off.

Vartan Manoogian ‘Had A Willingness To Give And Give’

VARTAN MANOOGIAN ‘HAD A WILLINGNESS TO GIVE AND GIVE’
By Ben Cohen, Star Tribune

Minneapolis Star Tribune , MN
Aug 9 2007

The artistic director of Wisconsin’s Madeline Island Music Camp had a
"passion, love and intensity" for music.

Vartan Manoogian, the artistic director of Wisconsin’s Madeline Island
Music Camp, died of pneumonia in Valencia, Spain, on July 12.

Manoogian, of Madison, a virtuoso violinist, was 71.

He began teaching at the camp at its founding in 1986 and became its
artistic director in 2000, bringing the luminaries of chamber and
ensemble groups to Madeline Island from across the nation.

"Vartan had a passion, love and intensity for the music and teaching,"
said the camp’s founder and executive director, Tom George. "He had
a willingness to give and give and give to his students."

The camp draws heavily on students from Minnesota’s youth orchestras
and has had many teachers from the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul
Chamber Orchestra.

George said that Manoogian was currently under contract to record,
and that his experience as a concert master gave his playing "a big
sound." He also published a methodology on proper bowing.

And Manoogian was known for his fiery temper when students weren’t
paying attention.

In that case, "Watch out," said George, who added that the campers
loved him anyway, as evidenced in their evaluations of Manoogian.

"The kids recognized that they were around a great, wise old master,"
added George.

Evan Vicic of St. Paul, a violinist who attends Central High School,
said it was clear that Manoogian was devoted to his students, and
that they understood he was "passionate" about the music.

"He could pinpoint the reasons for any difficulties that I had with
my studies. He really helped me in my expression of the music,"
Vicic said.

Manoogian was born in Baghdad to Armenian parents who had fled the
Armenian Genocide of 1915 to 1918.

When he was 16, he attended the Paris Conservatory and was rated the
best in his class, said George. Later, he earned a master’s degree
from New York’s Juilliard School.

Manoogian served as associate concertmaster of the Lausanne Chamber
Orchestra and later as concertmaster of L’Orchestre de la Suisse
Romande. He was artist in residence at the North Carolina School of
the Arts and a member of the Claremont String Quartet before joining
the University of Wisconsin faculty in 1980.

And Manoogian was keen to make sure that the 80 students who attend the
music camp in June and July had a good time, when not working on music.

Manoogian was teaching and performing at a festival in Valencia when
he died.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Brigitte, of Madison; son,
Avedis of Minneapolis; brothers, Hamazasp of Phoenix; Sooren of La
Crescenta, Calif.; Khachig of Los Angeles; and Archbishop Torkom of
Jerusalem; and sister, Zovig Devletian of Philadelphia.

No funeral service will be held. The camp’s fundraiser and concert
to be held on Nov. 1 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will be
a memorial to Manoogian.
