(IPA/IFEX) – The following is an IPA press release:

IPA condemns the killing of the Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant
Dink in Istanbul today.

Geneva, 19 January 2007 – According to sources in Istanbul,
Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink was the victim of an armed
assault. Apparently he was shot dead today by an 18-year-old man in
front of his newspaper offices, Agos.

Ana Maria Cabanellas, IPA President, declared: "IPA is outraged by
what has happened in Istanbul today. We urge the Turkish authorities
to lead all the necessary investigations so that those people can be
brought to justice who are responsible for this horrible."

Bjorn Smith-Simonsen, Chairman of the IPA Freedom to Publish
committee, paid tribute to the journalist: "IPA has been working for
many years with Hrant Dink. He was a free and courageous man; we will
miss him and the fight for freedom of expression will miss him."

Hrant Dink had been condemned under Article 301 of the Turkish penal
code for insulting Turkishness. At the time many came to his defence,
including EU Commissioner Olli Rehn. Perhaps this sad occasion will
serve as a reminder to the Turkish authorities to repeal the divisive
and idealogical Article 301 and all other provisions preventing
freedom of expression in Turkey.

The assassination of Hrant Dink demands that they finally proceed
with the repeal.

Three held after ‘antiTurkish’ editor killed

Three held after ‘antiTurkish’ editor killed
Suna Erdem in Istanbul

A prominent newspaper editor who was convicted for questioning
Turkey’s official denial of genocide against its Armenian community
was shot dead in central Istanbul yesterday.

Witnesses saw a young man fire three shots at Hrant Dink, 53, a
Turkish Armenian, outside the offices of the bilingual Agos, which he
edited. Only a week ago he had written about death threats to his
family.

Three men were arrested soon after the killing.

Mr Dink was the highest-profile defendant to be convicted under
article 301 of the Turkish penal code that makes it an offence to
`insult Turkish-ness’. The European Union has called for the article
to be scrapped as part of Turkish entry negotiations.

An appeals court gave Mr Dink a six-month suspended jail sentence for
insulting Turk-ishness last year. Other accused writers, including
Orhan Pamuk, the Nobel Laureate, have been acquitted of similar
charges. Mr Dink was preparing to take his case to the European Court
of Human Rights.

In an editorial on January 10, he referred to numerous death threats.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Prime Minister, called the attack a blow to
peace and stability in Turkey. `Once again, dark hands have chosen
our country and spilt blood in Istanbul to achieve their murky
goals,’ he told a news conference.

The attack is sure to ignite the tension already building at the
approach of May’s presidential elections and November’s parliamentary
polls in the EU candidate country, where nationalist sentiment has
been growing strongly and sometimes violently.

As Mr Dink lay dead on the street, crowds gathered near by chanted
`shoulder to shoulder against fascism’.

Mr Dink had taken one particularly threatening letter to a
prosecutor, but nothing had come of it. He confided to close friends
that he was worried that he might be attacked.

Lawyers and commentators close to Mr Dink said that they suspected
shady forces from within the nationalist-secular-ist state structure,
who are suspicious of Turkish EU entry.

Turkey: journalist of Armenian descent murdered

Hrant Dink, a Turkish journalist of Armenian origins, editor of the
weekly Agos, was shot to death today in Istanbul. He had been sued by
Turkish courts and was the target of nationalist groups.
He was shot in front of his newspaper’s office. He had been sued
several times for saying that the massive killing of Armenians during
the Ottoman Empire was a genocide.

`Of course I say it’s a genocide. Because the result makes it what it
was. You can see that a people who had lived on these grounds for
4000 years has disappeared.’

Dink had been sued under the infamous penal code on ‘insulting
Turkishness," which has been used to persecute dozens of
intellectuals and speakers, usually because of their ‘genocidal’ view
of the Armenian massacre.

Armenians claim that 1.5 million of them were slaughtered between
1915 and 1918. According to Turkey, 300,000 Armenians were killed,
and just as many Turks when Armenians sided with Russian troops in
Anatolia, revolting against the Ottoman Empire.

Ex-U.N. oil-for-food chief charged

Ex-U.N. oil-for-food chief charged

By LARRY NEUMEISTER, Associated Press Writer

The former United Nations oil-for-food chief was charged Tuesday with
bribery and conspiracy to commit wire fraud for his role in the
scandal-tainted humanitarian program.

The charges against Benon Sevan, 69, of Nicosia, Cyprus, were
contained in a rewrite of an indictment stemming from the scandal over
the operation set up from 1996 to 2003 to permit the Iraqi government
to sell oil primarily to buy food and medicine for suffering Iraqis.

The program was designed to help Iraqis cope with U.N. sanctions, but
authorities said it was corrupted by bureaucrats, oil tycoons and
Saddam Hussein after the former Iraqi leader was allowed to choose the
buyers of Iraqi oil and the sellers of humanitarian goods.

Sevan, who had worked for the U.N. for 40 years, has repeatedly denied
wrongdoing.

Federal and state prosecutors also announced the indictment of Ephraim
Nadler, 79, of Manhattan, on the same charges. He helped a
coconspirator obtain the right to buy Iraqi oil under the program in
exchange for commissions from the oil sales and then funneled
approximately $160,000 of these oil commissions to Sevan, the
indictment said. Nadler is the brother-in-law of former
U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

The name of Nadler’s attorney was not immediately available.

U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia said the United States has lodged
warrants for the arrest of both men with Interpol and will seek their
arrest and extradition to the United States.

FBI Assistant Director Mark J. Mershon said the indictment brings to
14 the number of individuals charged in the case.

Since 2004, Sevan has been the subject of a U.N.-backed probe of fraud
and waste in the $64 billion operation.

Eric Lewis, a lawyer for Sevan, did not immediately return a telephone
message for comment.

In August 2005, a U.N.-appointed investigating committee pursuing
claims of fraud and waste in the program accused Sevan of a conflict
of interest in his handling of oil-for-food contracts. Sevan resigned
from the U.N. that same month and returned to his native Cyprus.

The U.N. investigating committee also accused him of accepting some
$147,000 in kickbacks for steering the contracts to a company of his
choice.

On Feb. 22, South Korean businessman Tongsun Park is scheduled to be
sentenced for his conviction on charges he accepted at least $2
million to serve Iraq’s interests in the scandal. He could face up to
five years in prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Miller told the jury in Park’s trial
last July that Park was part of a decade-long conspiracy to bring
about the lifting of sanctions imposed on Iraq after it invaded Kuwait
and brought about the first Gulf War.

Miller said Park used his relationship with former
U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali to join an effort by
Samir A. Vincent, an Iraqi-American, to earn the favor of Iraq and
share as much as $45 million in windfall gains if the sanctions were
lifted.

Vincent, who testified against Park, has pleaded guilty to federal
charges and is cooperating with the government. He testified that Park
arranged meetings during 1993 with himself, Boutros-Ghali and Vincent.

Miller told the jury that Park and Vincent arranged a 1993 meeting in
Geneva, Switzerland, with Boutros-Ghali and Tariq Aziz, then Iraq’s
deputy foreign minister, and Barzan al-Tikriti, the half brother of
Saddam who then was the Iraqi ambassador to the United Nations in
Geneva.

Several others accused in the conspiracy are awaiting trial, including
Texas oilman Oscar S. Wyatt Jr., who has pleaded not guilty.

Robert Menendez Again Blocked Hoagland’s Nomination As US Ambassador

ROBERT MENENDEZ AGAIN BLOCKED HOAGLAND’S NOMINATION AS US AMBASSADOR TO ARMENIA

PanARMENIAN.Net
11.01.2007 13:17 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Democrat Senator Robert Menendez took advantage of
his veto power on January 10 blocking Richard Hoagland’s nomination
as US ambassador to Armenia, the Associated Press reports.

It’s worth mentioning that when the new 110th US Congress started its
work, President George Bush for the second time proposed R. Hoagland’s
candidacy for US ambassador post to Armenia. It’s worth reminding
the strong negative attitude towards Richard Hoagland’s nomination is
connected with his public denial of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in
Ottoman Empire. Despite the protests, R. Hoagland’s nominations was
examined and confirmed. As Robert Menendez stated, many politicians,
including the US president, avoid to call the crimes at the beginning
of 20th century in Turkey as ‘Genocide’, and Richard Hoagland’s
nomination can become a step back, which does not proceed nether
from the interests of Armenia nor the Armenian Diaspora. It is worth
mentioning that after elections to the Congress at the end of the
last year, US Senate, according to the order, returned Hoagland’s
candidacy to the president. Simultaneously Senators Robert Menendez
and Harry Reid called upon the president to propose a new candidacy,
IA Regnum reports.
