Armenian exports of cut and polished diamonds slumped 61.5 percent
on the year in the first three-quarters of 2012 to 104,300 carats,
according to its Customs Service.

In value terms, exports plummeted to US$57.8 million in the
January-September period from US$85.9 million in the same period
of 2011.

The country’s Economics Ministry tells Interfax that the exports
dropped as a result of falling global demand for diamonds.

Armenia imports around 50 percent of its rough diamonds from Russian
mining giant Alrosa, and exports cut and polished diamonds mostly to
Europe, the United States, and Russia.

Azerbaijan will free Karabakh and restore historical and cultural
monuments, Azeri President Ilham Aliyev said as a monument to opera
singer Bjulbjul was unveiled in Baku on Wednesday.

“We will never allow them to create another Armenian state on ancient
Azeri lands and we will certainly restore our territorial integrity,”
he said.

“Monuments to Bjulbjul, Natavan and Uzeyir Hajibeyov will be restored
in Susa. I am confident we will witness the opening of these monuments
and raise the Azeri national flag in Hankendi and Susa,” Aliyev said.

Folk songs and opera sang by Bjulbjul are the ‘golden fund’ of
Azeri music, the president said. He recalled that Bjulbjul was born
in Karabakh.

The Armenians destroyed Azeri historical and cultural monuments in
the occupied lands, the president said.

A Very Important Conference On The Hunchakian Party

A VERY IMPORTANT CONFERENCE ON THE HUNCHAKIAN PARTY

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

By Prof. Osheen Keshishian

An important academic conference was held on Saturday,October 27, 2012,
on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the establishment of the
first Armenian political party, the Social Democratic Hunchakian Party.

The event took place at Woodbury University’s Fletcher Jones
Foundation Auditorium in Burbank, California. The conference was
organized by the Armenian Educational BenevolentUnion (AEBU) and
the Nor Serount Cultural Association (NSCA), and co-sponsored by the
Richard Hovannisian Endowed Chair in Armenian History at UCLA, Armenian
Research Center at the University of Michigan, Woodbury University,
and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR),
thus giving more weight and importance to the conference.

The Social Democratic Hunchakian Party (SDHP) is the first Armenian
political party which was established in 1887 by a group of young
intellectuals studying in Geneva, Switzerland. They were Avedis
Nazarbekian, Kevork Gharadjian, Mariam Vardanian, Ruben Khan-Azat,
Kristapor Ohanian, Gabriel Kafian, and Manuel Manuelian.

They were all Russian Armenians with definite leaning toward Marxism
and socialism and all of them were in their twenties. It is also
interesting that a young woman was also among the founders.

Renowned individuals joined the party, like Antranik Ozanian, Stepan
Sabah-Gulian, Mourad, Paramaz and others. The Hunchakians participated
in the Sasoun, Van, Shabin Karahisar and Zeytoun resistance movements
and many times in leadership positions.

The party established several newspapers, schools, youth groups,
engaged incultural and athletic activities throughout the Middle East,
Europe, The United States, Canada, South America, and other locations.

This short story was expanded, studied, analyzed during the high
caliber conference with the participation of scholars and professors
from Europe and Eastern and Western United States, a phalanx of
experts – Sebouh Aslanian, Ara Sanjian, Gerard Libaridian, Hratch
Tchilingirian, Rev. Abel Manoukian, Vahram Shemmesian, Garabet
Moumdjian, Kevork Bardakjian, Richard Hovannisian, Aram Arkun, Ara
Dostourian, and Vartan Matiossian.

They talked about the ideology, problems, difficulties, inter-party
relations, achievements, issues and various activities of the
Hunchakians, particularly during the Ottoman Empire. Many speakers
wanted to talk longer their allotted time, because there is so much to
delineate about the first Armenian political party. This conference
was long overdue, and I am glad that it took place revealing hitherto
little known or even unknown events, activities, principals, andfacts.
One eye-catching fact was that the audience was overwhelmingly an
educated class of the community. At the same time, it was unfortunate
to notice the absence of the members of the other political parties,
and you could count them on your fingertips.

The conference was webcasted live. Another positive observation:
it was announced that the conference proceedings will be printed in
a book very soon, so that history will be available for everyone.

The organizing committee, the core members – Harut Der-Tavitian,
Sevak Khatchadourian, Vasken Khodanian and Thomas Yeterian, – deserve
a great thank you.

Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (file)

Ankara’s statements about the alleged threat posed by the Armenian
Metsamor nuclear power plant, have political and devoid of technical
arguments, said the chairman of the Nuclear Safety Control of Caucasian
country, Ashot Martirosyan.

“The nuclear power plant meets all safety requirements,” said
Martirosyan told reporters today.

The official called on the Turkish side to present evidence that the
nuclear facility violates the regulations on security before talking
about the threats that supposedly represents.

Earlier, the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner
Yildiz, demanded the immediate closure of the Armenian nuclear plant
because it endangers the security of the entire region.

Yildiz said that the plant in question works for more than four
decades old nuclear plants are the biggest danger now represent.

CHAIRMAN OF AGRARIAN-PEASANT UNION OF ARMENIA ACCUSES AGRICULTURE MINISTRY OF CONCEALING THE FACT THAT CATTLE IS INFECTED WITH SIBERIAN PLAGUE AND AFRICAN SWINE FEVER

arminfo
Friday, November 2, 20:06

The Armenian Agriculture Ministry has concealed the fact of loss of
the cattle because of Siberian plague in Tsovak village of Gegharkunik
region, Chairman of the Agrarian- Peasant Union of Armenia, Hrach
Berberyan, said at today’s press conference.

Moreover, but for the activities of the Food Safety Service of the
Agriculture Ministry, the Siberian plague outbreak could remain
undisclosed. According to Berberyan, it was the employees of
this Service that discovered the fact that the cattle in Vardenis
(Gegharkunik region) was infected with aphthous fever in 2011, while
the employees of the Center of Veterinary Sanitary, Food Safety and
Phytosanitary Services denied the fact of infection.

Berberyan thinks that the infection of the cattle with Siberian plague
in Tsovak village could be due to the low quality of vaccine or the
negligence of the vets, who failed to vaccinate the whole livestock
of Tsovak’s farmers.

He added that the Agriculture Ministry also conceals the fact that 1-2
cases of African swine fever infection are registered every year. He
also blamed the Ministry for passiveness in the fight against the
potato moth spread in the country.

Berberyan said that in 2011 the Union warned the Ministry about potato
moth found in tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, potatoes and tobacco in
the villages of Darakert and Ghukasavan of Ararat region, but the
Ministry did nothing to prevent the pest from spreading.

“If we spent just $25,000 to fight the moth in 2011, it would have
not destroyed harvest in 45 communities this year,” Berberyan said,
adding that the Union is ready to provide free seeds to farmers whose
plantations have been damaged by potato moth.

“They in the Ministry say that there are no chemicals that can kill
potato moth but it is not true – there are such chemicals and they
are effectively used worldwide,” Berberyan said.

“Unless we take urgent measures, next year potato moth will spread
over 200 communities and in 2014 there will be no uninfected tomato,
eggplant, pepper, potato and tobacco plantations,” Berberyan said.
